Ulysses Simpson Grant

Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. His parents are Jesse Root Grant, a tanner and businessman, and Hannah (Simpson) Grant. Jesse Grant was a Whig with abolitionist sentiments. He raised in a Methodist family. His mother never took occasion to visit the White House during her son's presidency. The names of Ulysses Grant's brothers and sisters are Samuel Simpson Grant, Clara Rachel Grant, Virginia Paine Grant, Orvil Lynch Grant and Mary Frances Grant. The sons of Hiram Ulysses Grant are Frederick Dent Grant, Ulysses S. Grant Jr. (Buck), Ellen Grant (Nellie) and Jesse Root Grant. Hiram Ulysses Grant was the 18th president of the United States (18691877) following his success as military commander in the American Civil War. After his death, Grant was popularly seen as "a symbol of the American national identity and memory". Since 1990, historians appreciated his protection of African Americans during Reconstruction and his peace policy towards American Indians. As commanding general in the Civil War, he had defeated secession and destroyed slavery, secession's cause. As President during Reconstruction he had guided the South back into the Union. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885, at the age of 63.
