Newsletter, June 2016

Last year, one of our Lake neighbors wondered how Lake Parker originated or was formed. While there are varying opinions, according to the Geology Department of the University of Vermont and the Vermont State Geologist, the following seems to be the most likely sce-nario: Some three million years ago, during the “Ice Age”, prolonged cold temperatures caused snowfall to accumulate (not melt), resulting in the formation of large snowfields. As the weight of the snow increased, the lower layers turned to ice and the combined weight of the snow and ice caused the lower layers of ice to flow or move very slowly. This phenomenon is what is called a glacier. During various time periods, melting of the snow and ice pack caused the glacier to retreat northward, and then advance southward during cold periods. Some believe the glacial ice advanced and retreated across the whole of Vermont four times! In some locations, the ice was more than one mile thick, weighing more than 1500 tons per square foot, pushing or compressing the earth downward some 1700 feet below its present level. After the ice retreated, the earth’s surface rebounded upward! The movement of the ice changed the landscape of Vermont; large and small lakes were formed when the glacial ice blocked melting water from retreating. When the “Burlington Stage Ice” retreated to the northwest, some 12,000 to 14,000 years ago, the ice scoured the earth, removing softer rock and soil, and forming depressions which were filled with water. Depressed areas with softer soil materials are known as “glacial moraines”; depressed or carved areas of harder rock are known as glacially scoured rock basins. Lake Willoughby is an example of a glacially scoured rock basis, which has large areas of exposed rock with very steep slopes, likely carved by retreating ice. It is thought that Lake Parker is a glacial moraine, formed between 12,000 to 14,000 years ago, by the retreating glacial ice which removed softer soil materials; Lake Parker is gener-ally surrounded by low sloped topography with few locations of exposed rock formations. Randy Williams reports that boulders moved by glacial ice movements including one con-taining a petroglyph are located on the Williams-Day property, on the east side of Lake Parker. The documents which were reviewed for the preparation of this article are listed on page 9. This article was submitted by John Wooten, April 2016.

Additional sections of the walking path have been im-proved. A new bridge was built and two wet areas now have a raised walkway over them.

This is a very nice nature trail for anyone that likes to hike! Hiking shoes or other appro-priate footwear encouraged. See the map on our website for approximate distances.

Through the efforts of, and with funding provided by, Karl Krantz and several oth-ers, 500 eight to fourteen inch rainbow trout were purchased and introduced to Lake Parker in early May 2016. The VT Department of Fish and Wildlife has re-quested that we monitor and report how these fish are doing as the State may consider stocking our lake with trout in the future. Please provide any observa-tions of these fish (i.e. number caught, any deceased fish along the shoreline) to John Wooten ([email protected]). John will keep track and will inform the State of our observations at the end of the summer season.

This year’s Pioneer Day Camp will be held from Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1. It will take place at the original historical settlement for the Town of Glover, which dates back to 1798. The theme for this year is “Glover Pioneer Camp—Twenty Years—Grooming the next generation of Glover Historians.” A variety of morning activities will be offered, which all campers will rotate through during the week. These activities include: pottery, campfire cooking, stiltbuilding, paper mache and parade prep. The youngest children, 6 & 7 year olds, will be in a special group with certified elementary teachers for special age appropriate activities, in addi-tion to participating in a some of the scheduled morning activities. After morning activities, campers will break into their own chosen groups for fortbuilding, one of our most popular offerings. They will learn how to lash, use tools safely, and collaborate together on their forts. They will also learn a about Ralph Parker, Surveyor and Land Agent, who was sent by General John Glover in 1798 to settle the land, sell the lots, and start the town. In the afternoon, the campers will participate in afternoon focus groups. Topics include building a cob bread oven, carpentry, free air painting, and nature arts. For more information, go to http://gloverpioneercamp.org/ you cal also call Betsy Day at 525-4051, or email [email protected]. Any 1st through 8th grade child who is interested in attending can register online. The registration form can be printed and mailed in. Focus groups are on a first come first serve basis. Donations are always welcomed for scholarships to make sure that every kid has the opportunity to participate.
