HORIZONS Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Executives February 2017 continued on page 2 President’s Message I have a question for you dear colleagues and fellow mem- bers. Is this your time to step up? Perhaps it is the fact that this is the year I will turn 65. Perhaps it is the fact that this past year has been a tumultuous one in my personal life, with my husband facing life threatening health issues. Perhaps it is the volatility and unpredictability of the political climate that reminded us all that you just never know. Perhaps it is just the natural evolution of life. Whatever the factors, I’ve been thinking about “what’s next?” more than ever before. And by “what’s next?” I mean how will the next chapters of my life unfold, as the professional aspects that have so consumed me for the past 40 plus years, fade into the back- ground and give way to as yet unexplored new ventures? I’ve been daydreaming about things like the opportunity to audit classes at UW if you are a “senior” (I wish I would have paid more attention to history when it was a requirement!), learning to golf, the culinary school at Madison College (cooking is my passion), and taking piano lessons (my mother required five years when I was young and didn’t appreciate it...oh how I wish I could hammer the ivories like my niece can!). Our organization is blessed by many of my contemporaries who have been lead- ing and contributing to our organization for many years. Like me, they are starting to think about what comes next. Likewise, we have many members who are newer to our organization and, perhaps to their leadership roles, who we will look to for leadership and contribution in the future. Last year alone we had 65 new members join us. This represents a wealth of new talent, new energy and unlimited potential for WONE. This month, I am challenging those of us who are currently providing leadership within the organization to reach out in a special effort to identify others to whom we can pass our batons. To those who have not yet participated, I am urging you to consider how you may engage in the work of WONE. For starters, I urge everyone to attend our 2017 Annual Convention, to be held April 26-28 at the Glacier Canyon Lodge at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. This conference has consistently been a great value with high-quality offerings at a reasonable price. It’s also a fantas- tic place to meet your fellow WONE members and establish networking relationships that are so sustaining during these challenging times. Take a look at our committee structure, as well. We are always looking for great new members to help advance the work of these important groups. Seek out the chairs to learn more about the committees’ work and assess where the best fit for your talent and interests can be found. President’s Message

I have a question for you dear colleagues and fellow mem-bers. Is this your time to step up? Perhaps it is the fact that this is the year I will turn 65. Perhaps it is the fact that this past year has been a tumultuous one in my personal life, with my husband facing life threatening health issues. Our organization is blessed by many of my contemporaries who have been lead-ing and contributing to our organization for many years. Like me, they are starting to think about what comes next. Membership Committee Update

As the new Chair of the Membership Committee, I am delighted to work with you all to grow the strength and depth of our membership in WONE over the upcoming years ahead. The overall purpose of the Membership Committee is to not only promote general membership and provide high value to our members but to also increase our diversity as a group. From our 2016 membership survey, we discovered the majority of our mem-bers have been traditionally female, from acute care settings and most in the 51-65 years old age range. In order to best meet the mission of WONE (to shape health care through innovative and expert nursing leader-ship), it is important to have a wide array of voices at the table including all our generations in the workforce. In 2016, the WONE bylaws were changed to also expand to our membership to include new aspiring nurse leaders of the future.

We finished 2016 with 256 members strong. The Membership Committee would like to see our 2017 member-ship reach or exceed our record high of 322 members which was achieved in 2011.

Please remember to renew your 2017 membership, and we also challenge each of you to reach out to a col-league outside the acute care setting to encourage them to join WONE. Consider your young aspiring nurse leaders and provide them the benefit of joining and networking with the WONE group of professionals as well.

The Membership Committee looks forward to a fun 2017 ahead with each of you.

WONE Spring Conference Save the Date

April 26-28, 2017 The Wilderness Hotel and Conference Center

Wisconsin Dells

The WONE Program committee has been very busy this year planning our spring conference to be held in the Wisconsin Dells. We have several excellent speakers this year so I will briefly hit the high-lights here.

As usual, Wednesday night will be registration night but this year we will also have a networking social with a short presentation. Come early and meet up with friends, old and new, and learn more about an exciting new program to be revealed at our networking social!

Thursday will be our main day of topics. Our key note speaker, Mark Taylor will kick us off by discuss-ing the multigenerational workplace. He will talk about generational traits, issues and dynamics in the workplace and give suggestions for developing all workers in your workforce.

Last year we were asked to provide more general sessions and fewer breakouts because it was dis-appointing to have to miss so many great topics. We listened to our members, and this year we will only be having one breakout session with two topics from which to choose.

On Friday, we will open with our key note speaker, Brian Lee, who will talk about the Magic of En-gagement. He will talk to us about unlocking employee enthusiasm through engagement to improve the patient experience.

Finally, we will close on Friday with Jason Kotecki, a fun, inspirational speaker from the Madison area. Jason will leave us light hearted, with our passion restored by curing our “adultitis.”

We hope you join us for this fun filled program. Brochures are being finalized and should be out to the membership soon.

WONE Nursing Leadership Academy (NLA)

5

The Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Executives (WONE) and Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA) have proudly collaborated in creating the Wisconsin Nurse Leadership Academy for our nursing leaders of tomorrow.

All RN candidates for the WNLA must be nominated by the Chief Nursing Officer of their employing organization. Staff nurses aspiring to be nurse leaders and new managers from diverse practice environments are welcome to apply.

Each WNLA program consists of two on-site conference days followed by one additional on-site conference day six weeks later. Participants must also complete assigned pre-work, conduct a personal ‘project’ at their workplace between class dates, and present the results of their project when returning on Day Three.

The NLA will again be offering regional sites to accommodate aspiring nurse leaders. Terry Kabitzke-Groth, VP Nursing and CNO for Aurora Medical Center Grafton and Aurora Medical Center in Washington County will take the reins from long standing program chair, Paula Hafeman, DNP, RN, FACE CNE Hospital Sisters Health System-Eastern Wisconsin.

The 2017 Spring offerings are fast approaching. Aurora Medical Center in Grafton will be hosting April 20, 21 and June 2. Bellin will be hosting on May 16, 17 and June 30. The fall offerings begin with Aspirus in Wausau on September 21, 22 and November 3. New this year is the partnership with Gundersen Health in La Crosse, hosting their first on September 28, 29 and November 27. Our regional approach has increased access for participants with the convenience of decreased travel. In 2016, there were three regional offerings with a total attendance topping 100 participants. Please refer to the WNA website for details on registration and deadlines.
