You can help support BC Guide Dog Services and Autism Support Dogs by collecting used stamps (just tear off the envelope leaving a small paper border) and metal tabs from cans (pop cans, tuna tins, etc.). It may seem like a small thing, but every contribution helps to graduate another special dog to be teamed with a sight impaired person or an autistic child, creating a life-changing miracle. Bring your contributions of used stamps or can tabs to NOSA. training classes and I will forward them to the BC Guide Dog Services. Our fall AIOC trial was held on October 19th, 2014 at the Saanich fairgrounds. We were back at the RCMP barn after our furlough to the Agriplex for our spring trial. We were very pleased to have David Denis as our obedience judge and Bill Blair as our rally judge. The judge for Greater Victoria’s obedience trial was Terry Gains. I was very pleased that we had some passes in our obedience trial for NOSA members after getting shut-out at our spring trial. Jan Gillis and her Sheltie Gracie had a pass in pre-novice in both our trial and the Greater Vic trial. From the Novice A class Judy Wood and her Lab Rebus had a score of 191 which made her our high NOSA member as well as high Novice NOSA dog. Judy also passed in Novice A with her lab Maggie at the Greater Vic trial with a score of 181.5. There were two passes from the Novice B class. Jody Waldie and her Sheltie Mystique passed with a score of 173 and Duncan Morrison and his Lab Taran had a score of 174.5. In Open B Duncan Morrison and his Lab Teija passed with a score of 188 which made them our top NOSA Open team. Duncan and Teija also passed in the Greater Vic trial with a score of 179. Overall our High in Trial was Brenna Litwack from IPLRC with her dog Bella (pict) with a score of 192.5, this also made her our High Visitor. A big thank-you to our obedience ring stewards: Anne Morgan as gate steward and Liz Hayes and Elaine Hobday as ring stewards.

There were multiple NOSA passes in both rally trials. From the Novice A class Jody Waldie and her Sheltie Mala had two passes with scores of 89 and 93 completing their Rally Novice title. From the Novice B class we had several teams pass. Jody Waldie and her Sheltie Mystique passed both trials with scores of 94 and 96, completing their Rally Novice title. Lee Pears and her American Cocker Feist got their first two Novice legs with scores of 94 and 96 and Lori Bulmer and her Beagle Nat got their first two Novice legs with scores of 80 and 81. From the Advanced A class Jan Gillis and her Sheltie Gracie received two passes with scores of 82 and 84 completing their Rally Advanced title and from the Advanced B class Duncan Morrison and his Lab Teija got their final leg with a score of 97 to get their Advanced title as well. Congratulations to the new title holders! Our rally ring was ably headed up by Karen Blair, who, I would like to mention, also brought some absolutely lovely flowers to adorn our judging and trophy tables. Working with Karen as ring stewards were Heather Cormie, Don Helliwell, Lori Bulmer and Heather Haskett. A big thank-you to all of our volunteers, we can’t put on trials without you! This was my last trial as AIOC trials secretary as I will now be stepping aside and Elizabeth Skaggs will be taking over. It has been a pleasure working with a variety of NOSA members to make our trials happen and I hope that the membership continues to support Elizabeth in the same manner that they assisted me. Very little will change from the outside as I plan to continue to help Elizabeth at the trials, so, I will still be at the desk helping to sign everyone in. I look forward to seeing everyone at our March trial. In the meantime happy training to everyone and have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! See you in 2015!

Each year (for many, many years) NOSA enters a drill team in the July 1st Sidney Days Parade. The team practices various formations prior to the parade. After the parade, there is a get-together at a member’s home. This year Heather Cormie opened up her beautiful home for the BBQ – thank you Heather! This year’s parade participants were:

• Rod Deacon with Lindy (Flat-Coated Retriever) • Cherry Condrey with Ryder and Wynn as a brace (Shelties) • Heather Cormie with Jack (Jack Russell Terrier) • Nikki and baby Benji Baker with Rufus (all-Canadian) • Paul Baker with Monty (German Shepherd) • Judy Wallace with Glic and Cariad as a brace (Border Collies) • Dave Clouston with Gillian (Portugese Water Dog) • Elizabeth Skaggs with Bella (All-Canadian) • Trina Jackson with Tanner (Border Collie Cross) • Rhiannon Broadfoot with Starr (Border Collie) • Banner carriers: Trey and Sabrina • Vintage Ford: Dave Wallace (thanks Dave!) • Parade co-ordinator: Irene Copus (who had the Border Collie Puppy, Riske, in Dave’s truck)

To celebrate NOSA’s 60 years of service to the community, the 60th Anniversary Seminar Committee (Marilyn Clayton, Liz Hayes, Charleen DeLong, Kathy Campbell and Carol Gordon) shifted gears and put together a free, 1-day public “Celebrating Dogs” event at beautiful Tulista Park, near the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, in Sidney. The weather was warm, with the breeze off the water keeping our dogs (and us) cool. The footing was manicured lawn.

The goal was not only to celebrate our 60th anniversary, but also to remind the public that obedience is the foundation to most other canine sports and to bring NOSA and obedience into the local public eye.

The morning started with an exciting Agility Demonstration by the Capital Comet’s Agility Club. Many breeds were represented including a couple of NOSA poodles – Liz Hayes’ Hari (Miniature Poodle) and Lynn Erskine’s Sterling (Standard Poodle). Comet’s very own Gerry Sloan did a great job of MC’ing their demo. And, as always, it was a real crowd pleaser! George Horel and his 5 year

old female Landseer Newfoundland, Calypso, provided a Carting demo that started by demonstrating the practicality of carting by helping Comets members take down the agility equipment – loading and hauling tunnels, weave poles, etc. He showcased a couple of different types of carts and their practical uses to carry cargo and people as well as

demonstrating the manoeuvrability of draft dogs. ☺ The new sport of Nose Work was show-cased by Janet Parker’s Clever Canine students. They demonstrated both container and exterior searches. Again a number of different breeds and mixed-bred dogs were represented showing that small and large; young and old dogs love nose work.

Sharon Sundher coordinated NOSA’s Obedience Demonstration. Showcasing Novice was Helen Moulden & Alee (Dutch Sheepdog), Elaine Hobday & Trixie (Labrador Retriever); and Lee Pears & Fiest (American Cocker Spaniel)], Open was Norah Shandley & Clancy (Sheltie) and Sharon Sundher & Maddie (Border Collie) and Utility was Kathy Campbell & Fleuri, who stole the show. Kathy Campbell also borrowed Kathy Hansen’s puppy, Mojo to demo

some puppy training and Dave Wallace show-cased his new Border Collie puppy, Cara.

Page 12: President’s Message EXECUTIVEnosa.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/newsletter_dec2014.pdf · vests, etc for sale. Plus a number of house keeping items. November 19 Annual General Meeting

12

The obedience portion of the event wound up with a Team Competition demonstrated by Liz Hayes & Stitch (12 yr old Miniature Poodle), Kathy Campbell & Fleuri, Helen Moulden & Alee and Teri Rolphs & Kaylah (11 yr old Schipperke). It was well done, well received and, as Team competitions usually are, entertaining. ☺

Next was a Rally Demo co-ordinated by Rally instructors Lee Pears and Shay Lockhart. Rally Novice, Advanced and Excellent were show-cased by Elizabeth Skaggs & Juno (Labrador Retriever), Lee Pears with Erin & Fiest (American Cocker Spaniels), Duncan Morrison & Teija (Labrador Retriever) and Shay Lockhart &

Lola (Miniature Pinscher). The day wound up with a Canine Good Neighbour Demonstration by Blair Kilgour. Duncan Morrison with Teija and Cherry Condrey with Wynn acted as demo teams. NOSA and the Greater Victoria Dog Obedience Training Club had information tents set up to answer obedience questions and Janet Parker (of Clever Canines) also had an information tent up to answer questions about nose work. Thanks go out to those NOSA members, who volunteered their time to:

• put up posters (Anne Morrison, Lee Pears, Helen Moulden and the organizing committee) • ensure ads got into local papers and on-line (Charleen DeLong). • pick up and return ring gates and obedience equipment (Duncan Morrison & Bill Blair) • set-up rings and tents (Bill Blair, Duncan Morrison, Jodie Waldie, Jan Gillis, Kathy

Campbell, Carol Gordon, Liz Hayes, Norah Shandley, Elizabeth Skaggs, and I’m sure I’ve missed a few people as we had lots of help!

• the NOSA Information Tent (Irene Copus, Liz Hayes, Carol Gordon).

• organize lunch for NOSA participants (Liz Hayes) • photograph and video the event: Norah Shandley, Jody Waldie

& Meredith Reeve (photos) and Jan Gillis (videos) • help with the obedience demos (Bill Blair as judge; Karen Rae, Steve & Elaine Hobday,

Dave Wallace, Judy Wood, Lee Pears and there were a few others, who were posts) • ensure every canine participant received a goodie bag (Jan Gillis & Jodie Waldie). • Master of Ceremonies for the event (Marilyn Clayton) • take-down – it happened so fast & efficiently that I can’t remember who all helped, but

again, it was a great crew! Thank you! • organize the event (Charleen DeLong, Liz Hayes, Kathy Campbell, Carol Gordon &

Mary Winspear Centre for providing the Reader Board free of charge to advertise our event; and to Charleen DeLong’s son, Sam Webber, a talented local musician, who lent us the PA system. On a hot and sunny Saturday afternoon in September, NOSA members got to put on a quick demo for a group of about 20 Cloverbuds at the Saanich Fairgrounds. The Cloverbuds are 4-H kids age 6 - 8, just getting started in 4-H. One of

their education modules over the 3-year-program is "Dogs" and NOSA was happy to oblige with some live action displays. Starting it off, Rod and Lindy gave a demo of not just obedience skills but

some impressive fieldwork moves as well. Norah and Clancy - the 'hey it's hot out here' sheltie - followed with a perhaps slightly less impressive array of obedience and agility tricks. Then to cap it off with some irresistible cuteness, Judy brought her border collie puppy, Cara, and spoke of some essentials to raising a happy, well behaved dog. After concluding the lecture/demo portion, the kids got to come out on the field and have some fun walking and brushing the dogs. The dogs appeared to lap up all the attention, not to mention the treats

September 2nd Charleen DeLong and Marilyn Clayton, along with Charleen’s sister put together a window display in the Mary Winspear Centre bringing NOSA, its 60th Anniversary and some of NOSA’s history and philosophies to the public. The display included a few NOSA trophies, medallions, keeper trophies; the clubs first minutes, rosettes,

ribbons, old photographs, club clothing, awards and items representing various levels of obedience and rally as well as responsible dog ownership. Charleen did a great job putting the display together; her sister added the finishing [floral] touches and all I could do was tell them what I liked where and take pictures. We had numerous visitors (as seen to the right) who were curious about NOSA. Unfortunately it was only possible to reserve the window for 1 week but the comments received from those who saw it were all very positive. Perhaps NOSA might want to consider doing this on an annual basis.

NOSA’s annual Christmas Party, coordinated by Karen Blair, was held December 6th at the Holy Trinity Church Hall. There was a good turn out of new and long-term members. As usual, NOSA provided the turkey, ham, punch, tea and coffee while members brought a potluck item, a small wrapped gift for

the gift exchange and something for the auction table. The food was fabulous as usual (NOSA members are great cooks) and George Emmond gave the blessing.

Helen Moulden, along with her “elf”, Judy Wallace, got the auction rolling after dinner. The revenue generated from the auction was matched by NOSA for a total of $1,378.00 which was delivered to the Sidney Lions Food Bank by President, Rod Deacon.

Duncan Morrison with Teija & Taran

Duncan has had a successful summer/fall. His Labrador Retriever Teija (pictured) earned her CKC CD (Companion Dog) and her AIOC Club CDX

(Companion Dog Excellent) obedience titles as well as her Club RA (Rally Advanced) title! His other Lab, Taran earned his CKC RA title as well as his Club CD. Jan Gillis and Gracie. In Obedience, I was really pleased when Gracie (CChh..CChh..((AAlltt..)) CCiinncceerrlleeee’’ss AA TToouucchh ooff GGrraaccee RRAA,, HHIICC,,CCGGNN)

qualified in a pre-novice class in a club trial and in one at the Tyee CKC trial in September. In Rally O, she completed her AIOC Advanced Rally title with two High in class rosettes at our club trial. At the November FPOTC Rally trial, Gracie

claimed three High in Class rosettes to attain her CKC Advanced title. We are also busy learning Agility with a goal to compete in 2015, along with furthering her Obedience and Rally-O work. Lots to look forward to!

Jan Gillis Jodie Waldie and Mystique & Mala Mystique, Mala and I have completely enjoyed our second year training with NOSA. This year we jumped into trialing and have learned a great deal through our successes and mistakes. The mistakes of course fall mainly on the shoulders of the human handler. If only we could trade ends of the leash now and then, our dogs are such good teachers. Mystique earned her CKC CD, Rally Novice, Rally Advanced and recently her Rally Excellent Title and her AIOC Rally Novice title. Mala is my “mature

student” joining our family at six after a life in the conformation ring. I am very proud of how he has taken to his obedience

learning and this year earned his CKC PCD, Rally Novice, Rally Advanced and needs one more leg for his Rally Excellent title. He also earned his AIOC Rally Novice title. We have made so many new friends and are having a great time on our ongoing learning journey. Thanks to our wonderful NOSA instructors who continue to guide us.

Rod Deacon and Lindy Rod Deacon and Lindy, his 8-year-old Flat-Coated Retriever, completed some field and

obedience titles this year. In August, they earned their United Kennel Club 'upland hunter' title during two days of tests in the Comox Valley put on by the Salt Chuck Hunting Retriever Club. During Labour Day weekend, Lindy completed her CKC 'senior hunter' title with two passes at the fall hunt classic hosted by the Pacific Rim Hunting Retriever Club. In the obedience ring, Lindy finished her AIOC 'utility dog' title under judge Bill Blair Oct. 18 at a club trial hosted by the Cowichan Dog Obedience Training Club. Over the winter months, we're training for next year's CKC tracking tests and UKC hunt tests.

Rod Deacon Lori Bulmer with Nat & Taylor My boy Nat completed his RN in September

in 3 straight trials with scores of 91, 95 and 92. Pretty good for an old man of 10 who only started

doing any kind of obedience last year. He is now CH Meriadoc Wynfield Solid Gold RN.

Nat is a dog that I got back (I bred him) nearly 5 years ago because he had blown a disc and was paralyzed in the rear. His family could not afford the necessary treatments to get him walking again so I brought him home from Vancouver and rehabilitated him. When I started getting back into performance dog sports a couple of years ago, I decided everyone needed to do something. I knew that Nat had been taught the basics so started working with him in obedience to see if he would like to do that. He seems to enjoy it and we may try Pre Novice in the spring. And in the conformation ring, my baby girl Taylor completed her championship in August with a Best of Breed over specials. She is now CH Just-Wright Begin Again and very soon will start adding letters after her name as she is working in obedience/rally, tracking and nose work.

Lori Bulmer Marilyn Clayton and Smoochie (Ch.Sunnland’s Blame It On Rio, CD, HSs, HTd, AgIS, AgIJS, CGN, Am.PT, ADC, SGDC, NAC, NJC, WV-N, TN-N) In May Smoochie earned her CKC HSs (Herding Start Sheep) title with a Reserve High In Trial and her HTd (Herding Tested Ducks) title. In June she completed her CKC Championship at the Nanaimo Kennel Club Shows. In August Smoochie played NADAC agility and completed her WV-N (Weavers Novice), NJC (Novice Jumpers Certificate) and her TN-N (Novice Tunnelers) titles. In September she earned her CKC AgNS (Agility Novice Select),

After losing Trixie so unexpectedly, we both felt the need to get another dog quickly. Ann Morrison (who wasn't going to have any

puppies until next Spring) found Taffy for us in Langley, from Ducksndogs Kennel, which is owned by a friend of hers. She was born the 24th of Aug. 2014. We went and got her on Oct 25th at 9 weeks of age. Many thanks to Ann Morrison, who found her for us. She is a very gentle, cuddly and loving puppy. Of course we think she is clever too - she all ready knows to sit for a treat and when she comes in from outside. She is learning to walk on the left and not trip me up, at least some of the time! We are really looking forward to Karen's puppy class in January.

With the passing of AIOC President Arlene Bishop, the Centennial Building (in Beban Park, Nanaimo) was not booked in time to reserve the first Saturday in May for Team Challenge. As a result it will be held April 25th – the weekend after NOSA’s CKC trials. This fun event is designed to build camaraderie between members of the various Island obedience clubs. Representative teams from the various AIOC clubs compete in this one-day event. In Obedience, there are three categories:

• 3-member teams – with 1 dog at each level (novice, open and utility)

• 2-member teams – dogs at two different levels (novice, open or utility)

• 2-member teams – both dogs at the same level (novice, open or utility)

Dogs compete at their respective level – i.e. if you don’t have a club CDX title, you can compete in Novice; if you don’t have a Club UD title, you can compete in CDX; those trialing in utility or with a club UD title can compete in utility. The score for each of the team members is added together to determine a teams total score. If you NQ an exercise, you retain your overall score. So don’t feel you have to be perfect to come out and have some fun! If there is someone you would like to team up, let me know. Otherwise I’ll be happy to make up teams based on the level(s) people are competing at.

This year, Team Challenge will also include Rally on a trial basis.

There will be 1 class only – two dogs at different levels. Criteria will be the normal highest score in the lowest time. Dogs can enter the level they are currently trialing in at AIOC trials or the level they have titled in (in Club trials) as

long as they have not yet achieved a higher level. As it is a trial to gauge the level of interest, no permanent trophies will be purchased. So if you want to see Team Challenge incorporate Rally, you’d best support it by entering.

NOSA pays the entry fees so there is no cost to you, other than your time and travel. NOSA’s job this year is the Raffle Table. I am looking for volunteers to help set up the raffle table, sell tickets, etc. I’m hoping to get enough volunteers so no one has to sit at the table very long. If you are competing, you will have time to look after your dog, get your dog ready to compete and get into the ring without feeling pressured.

If you are willing to have some fun at this year’s Team Challenge – either as an obedience or rally competitor or as a

volunteer at the raffle table – please see Marilyn Clayton.

NNOOSSAA’’ss CCKKCC TTrriiaallss AApprriill 1188--1199 NOSA hosts 4 CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) sanctioned obedience trials and rally trials every year. Many volunteers are required to make these trials a success. NOSA relies on members, students and friends to make this happen. The committee is looking for people willing to donate a ½ day or more to ring steward for 1 or more of these trials. This is a great way to learn about trialing, trial procedure and to see some top-notch dog/handler teams as well as all levels of competition. Experience is not a must – we will put an experienced ring steward with a new steward to help guide and teach them. If you are willing to help (please, please do), PLEASE contact Marilyn Clayton at [email protected] until a new Chief Ring Steward is found.

Stir together the dry ingredients in a large bowl. 2. Add the egg, banana and peanut butter. Blend well with a pastry blender until peanut butter and banana are about the size of small peas. 3. Add water gradually, stirring with a wooden spoon. The dough should be very stiff; if not, add a little more flour. 4. Knead the dough with your hands to create a smooth texture. 5. Roll the dough 1/4 inch thick. (It helps if the top and bottom of the dough are lightly floured.) 6. Use the cookie cutter to cut out the biscuits. Place the biscuits about 1/2 inch apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. 7. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 325 degrees for about 40 minutes to one hour. The biscuits should be lightly browned and they should not be moist inside. 8. Turn the oven off and let the biscuits stay inside without opening the door for five hours, or overnight, to let them harden. 9. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Make 3 1/2 dozen three inch by one inch wide biscuits.

NNOOSSAA’’ss TTrraaiinniinngg CCoommmmiitttteeee NOSA’s Training Committee (TC) brings over 300 years of experience to its students. No instructor at NOSA is allowed to teach a class unless they themselves have titled at least one dog through that particular level in either Club (AIOC) or Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). Most NOSA instructors have titled multiple dogs at higher levels. Assistants invited to join the Training Committee have a probationary period before being fully accepted as a member of the committee and all probationary assistants must start with a Practice class. In the new year, the TC welcomes Jane Morrison as a probationary assistant in the Novice Practice class.

NNNOOOSSSAAA HHHIIISSSTTTOOORRRYYY The past 2 newsletters featured lightly edited articles pertaining to NOSA’s history as written by the late Jean Read and published in the 1982-1985 newsletters. The following information was taken from the minutes of NOSA meetings.

A quick summary thus far and a few “firsts”: • The forerunner to NOSA was a

private club started in 1947. • June 16, 1954 the name “North

Saanich Dog Obedience Club” was selected and the club started bringing in dog/handler teams for training.

• January, 1959 the club chose Sanscha Hall (now the Mary Winspear Centre), which had just opened, as their home and, in February, the 1st trophy was donated to the club by the Sidney Recreation Commission. The Sidney Recreation Committee Cup was “to be awarded to the dog receiving the highest marks in the club CD trials in the year, or the highest aggregate marks in one, two or three trials in the year”. Today it is awarded to the dog earning the highest single Novice

score in a club trial for the [November 1 – October 31] year.

• December 4, 1958 was the 1st NOSA Graduation.

• NOSA’s 1st club trial was held April 9, 1959 in Sanscha Hall with 18 of the 39 entrants passing. High In Trial scored 191.

• In early 1960 NOSA member Major Smart attended the 1st meeting of what was to become the Association of Island Obedience Clubs (AIOC).

• In 1960 NOSA designed and printed the 1st Graduation Certificates.

• January 11, 1962 NOSA decided to register the club under the Societies act and to designed and make club crests. Mr Dallain and Commander Craven chose the Eskimo Dog as the dog to represent NOSA on NOSA’s crest. No reasoning why that breed was chosen is given in the minutes. Crests were given to all Junior handlers who trained their own dogs – others were sold for $0.75.

• December, 1963 NOSA decided to provide a 12-week conformation handling class for show dogs – fees were $2 for members and $3 for non-members.

• January 9, 1964 Donald & Molly Hudson were presented with Honorary Life- Memberships for their help getting NOSA started.

• September 3, 1964 Mrs. Walker Taylor, Treasurer from 1954-1972, presented NOSA with it’s 1st CKC Degree Plaque.

• February 11, 1965 NOSA decided to charge for entry into club trials - $0.50.

• In 1966 the club looked into hosting CKC trials but felt it was not possible.

• The November 1969 club trial was cancelled due to low attendance. Up until then, NOSA had hosted spring and fall trials.

Both Steve and I were stunned and shocked and so sad when we had to put Trixie down on the 15th of October. She suddenly became ill on the Monday of Thanksgiving weekend, those 3 days were a blear and by Wednesday it was obvious she was not going to get

better. We lost her to cancer at 5 1/2.

Trixie was born on the 18th of May 2009. We visited her every Sunday until we could bring her home. She was a very strong character, and full of enthusiasm, bouncing through life and enjoying everything. She loved playing "crazy dog" especially when she was supposed to be doing a recall! At the first night of this fall session, Irene asked for her to be a "demo dog". She asked us to do a retrieve on the flat. I threw the dumbbell and sent her, she shot out as she usually did, picked it up and then realized there were people watching, she rushed along the front of the ring looking at everybody, then to the back of the ring, where she bounced at all the dogs sitting quietly (and much too well behaved to take her up on "come play with me"), returned, sat down in front of me, dropped her dumbbell, and looked up as if to say that was fun!! Trixie got her CD in 2012 and was all ready to trial in open this fall. She was only 5 ½ years old - it was far too soon.

Mealtimes are a lot quieter at our house now.....no Piper demanding breakfast at 7:00, dinner at 4:30 or treats at 9:00. Don't ask me how they can tell time, but they can. Piper could also tell you what day of the week it was. We could drive from our house to Mary Winspear every day of the week, but on Wednesday nights, he barked non-stop from the

time we left home till we got to class. He loved being a demo dog and showing my students how the exercises should be done. It was a

different story in obedience trials though. He was the class clown. He knew his exercises but sometimes liked to throw in a curve ball, and the minute someone laughed.......that was it! He did get his CD and his Rally Novice (many years ago with Caro) and he passed his herding instinct test with flying colours. He knew exactly what to do with those darn sheep. When it came time to trial at the open level however, he just couldn't put it together in a trial so to avoid frustration for both of us he retired from competitive obedience. When it came time to trial at the open level however, he just couldn't put it together in a trial so to avoid frustration for both of us he retired from competitive obedience. He became a St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog and made regular visits to Resthaven Lodge. Oh yes....he also knew what day Tuesday was....that was visiting day. Again, non-stop barking till we got there and then he dragged me in to the building. He loved sitting beside the residents and getting patted. He had a few

favourites and occasionally jumped up onto a patient's bed and made himself comfortable.

As a St. John Ambulance Therapy dog, he was invited to tea at Govern-ment House and was part of the honour guard at the main entrance. Once inside, he met Lt. Governor Stephen Point who stopped to talk and admire him. He starred in the opera Vanessa at the Royal Theatre. Surprisingly, he managed to keep quiet when he was on stage.....maybe it was the cookies the leading actress would feed him! He was very protective of Nukka despite the fact she tormented him and dragged him around by

the tail if he wouldn't play. Just after we got her, I brought her to one of our trainer's nights. Someone's dog came over to sniff Nukka. Piper immediately inserted himself between her and the other dog as if to say “she may be a pain in the butt, but she's MY pain in the butt”. They were always together....if you called one, you got both. We would meet other dogs on our walks and after the initial greeting, they ignored the other dog(s) and did their own thing. We walked in many Sidney Days Parades and Piper would pull his cart and carry everyone's water bottles and other bits and pieces.

Sometimes he even pulled kids in his cart. He loved camping........he would run through the forest and leap over logs (why couldn't he do the high jump or the broad jump when I wanted him to?). Just three days before he died, he was doing just that while we were camping in

Nanaimo. He would sit outside the trailer over by the road and wait for people to pass by and come in to pat him – and they did. Kids especially liked to come into our campsite to play with the dogs. The squirrels tormented him knowing he couldn't get to them. He loved going into the river. He wasn't a swimmer, but he loved

going in and wading around. When he was quite young, we were down on the beach and he was playing with a young Golden Retriever. I think he was annoying her so she went into the water to get away from him. He followed her and she jumped on him and pushed him under. I figured that was it – no more water for him, but he surfaced, shook himself off and went right back in after her. Last year in Tofino, he wandered into the surf and wasn't the least bit worried about large waves. He was my fibre producer...........I learned how to spin many years ago by spinning my Samoyed hair and he produced copious amounts. Despite regular brushings, there were always white tumbleweeds in the corners. I will treasure those items I made from his fur. When I was at work, Piper became Hew's “shop dog”. He would lie in Hew's workshop and watch him doing his woodturning. He recognized my voice on the ham radio. When it became illegal to use cell phones while driving, I would call Hew on the radio to let him know I was on my way home. I could hear Piper barking in the background when Hew responded to my call. After Hew hung up the microphone, he knew “mum was coming home” so he would run to the back door and once outside, he would wait at the gate for me. Lately I commented that he must be going through his second childhood because he had become quite mischievous........stealing things

(usually paper) out of my purse and dragging toilet paper off the roll in the bathroom. He always had that innocent “who me?” look but you knew who was guilty. He will be greatly missed. A friend said he will be the happiest angel in heaven because he had such a good life. Run free buddy - you deserve it. Say hi to Tango and Paka at the Rainbow Bridge.
