President’s Message January 2019 I hope this note finds you merrily enjoying a wonderful Christmas season and preparing for a festive New Year! A BIG thank you to Elizabeth Dickinson, Su- zanne Plyler and room Captains: Cary Brown, Adele Wellford, Anne Keeney, Katie Dickinson, Lisa Colcolough, Irene Brownlow, Louise Slater, Veazey Krausnick, Lida Bross, Kaki Smith and all MGC volunteer members. The Dix- on was beautifully decorated for Christmas! Lysbeth Francis, Selden Popwell and Elizabeth Coors created a beautiful, memorable evening to welcome Joseph Massie to Memphis and honor the Cook family as we celebrated the Phoebe Cook Lecture Series in November. The reservations topped 100 and the weath- er couldn’t keep us away from enjoying a fabulously fun evening! Thank you, and great job! The wreath and layering bulb workshops organized by Emily Lowrance, floral design workshop with Kim Jameson organized by Cile Collier, and the River- woods trail clearing organized by Pam Martin were all so much fun! I learned an enormous amount of information at each event - if you can attend these functions please do sign-up. They are truly entertaining and a great way to make friends and learn too! Take a moment to make sure your membership at the Dixon and at the Botanic Garden are up to date. It is a require- ment of our club to retain active membership at any level in each organization. The always popular January home meetings are around the corner and specific information can be found in this news- letter. Please let your hostess and Kaki Smith know if you are not able to attend. I am thankful to know and work with each of you. You are amazingly talented and creative! I look forward to lively group discussions at the home meetings. I very much want to continue what former presidents have done to remain focused on efforts to move our club to new heights, plan fun events so we can build/grow relationships within our club, and align with GCA, all while helping make our city even better through our efforts. Home meetings are an ex- cellent platform to discuss new ways to accomplish these goals. Your participation is truly valuable. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours and a very joyful and Happy New Year! xxoo, Jenne 1 Memphis Garden Club January 2019 Phoebe Cook lecture with Joseph Massie

Layering Bulbs Workshop

Kim did an awesome job teaching us how to layer bulbs that will grow to different heights and have different bloom times. We layered tulips, narcissus, muscari and iris, finishing off with pansies. Great group: Jenne, Veazey, Jeannie, Emily M., Irene, Debbie, Cile, Roberta, Carroll, Emily L., Ferrin, and Melanie!

Thank you Kim, Deborah, and Dale! Sixteen MGC friends gathered to make Christmas wreaths to take home at our Dec. 3 Horticulture Workshop. Festive, beautiful and fun!

If you have an interest in the history of landscape architecture and design, you will want to at-tend a special showing at the Dixon on February 9, 2019 of a documentary of Beatrix Far-rand’s life. Beatrix was a prolific landscape designer of some of America’s most famous gar-dens. The niece of Edith Wharton, she traveled throughout Europe with her aunt around the turn of the 20th century, and visited gardens throughout the continent. Her love of horticul-ture and her determination to train for a career in landscape architect at a time when women could not even vote is an incredibly inspiring story. Many of her gardens continue to this day, and many other designs are currently being restored thanks to the donation of her renderings and plans to a library. Karyl Evans, an award-winning documentarian, who is a member of the GCA, has created this film. The Dixon is bringing both the documentary and its producer, to Memphis for a free showing of the film, along with an introduction by Evans. As a GCA mem-ber, you will be interested in the fact that Farrand was a GCA advisor, a close friend of many of the GCA’s founders, and a recipient of the 1947 GCA Distinguished Service Award. Please put February 9 on your calendar. Submitted by Debbie Pittman
