President’s Message

Rabbi’s & President’s Messages

Dear Temple Israel – What a journey! To be totally honest, as most of you know me to be, I never aspired to be President of Temple Israel. However, when we received our “unsolicited offer” for the 5419 E. Broad Street location, both Rabbi Zinkow and Harriette Hansell were convinced I needed to assume the role. I had just taken a new job and there is only so much time in a day. Harriette agreed to be

my co-President (a real gift to me and to the congregation). Though the “unsolicited offer” turned out to be too good to be true, it started our Congregation on the journey of historical proportion. We boldly stepped where few did, thanks to all of you. We were no strangers to the challenges facing our congregation, as Harriette and I have been members of the congregation for many years. We were active members of two rabbi search committees, executive director and educator search committees, as well as board and executive committee members for quite some time. In short, if you told us that our tenure(s) as Temple President(s) would begin with a congregational meeting in an un-air-conditioned room in the middle of July to discuss selling our building, we wouldn’t have believed that we would be smiling at the end of that crucial night – but we were. And even better, we still are. That curiosity and courage that we felt from our members that evening has stuck with me and Harriette, Brian Tuckerman and that brave Board of Directors, throughout this transition. And it shows from the complete success of our Shuvu campaign. We are so, so grateful. With your love, bravery and trust, these last few years have been pivotal in shaping and defining how we have and continue to progress as a congregation. I don’t just mean the shape of a facility, but I mean the shape of how we now share and cultivate the concept of our collective legacy. Who knew that a synagogue without a home could thrive and survive? You all clearly knew, as demonstrated through your deeds and actions. Whether it is showing up on Friday nights, supporting the Women of Temple Israel, being in the Empty Nesters Havurah, welcoming new members, feeding the homeless at the Hilltop, participating in Pride Shabbat, Jewish meditation or religious school activities. Acquaintances have befome friends and friends have become family, the shelter in our storms. That is our blessing.

(Continued on page 8)

Wandering the pepper tree lined streets of Jerusalem a few months ago, I came upon a Hebrew phrase etched into a slab of ancient stone outside someone’s home (see photo below). Drawn to the color - light turquoise painted on the ordinary beige - my eyes caught a glint a silver faucet poking out of the pock-marked stone, and then to a verse from the Book of Isaiah which read: “All

who are thirsty, come and drink water.” “That is SO Israel,” I thought to myself, “to create a drinking fountain right outside of someone’s home, the ultimate sign of hospitality, complete with biblical verse and all.” All who are thirsty will come on Friday night, May 10th, when TI will hold our annual celebration of our LGBTQ Temple Israel family on Pride Shabbat. With music and joy, we will drink deeply from our cup which “runneth over” because we are an amazing community which has always welcomed everyone. We will toast our allies and do what TI does best: make everyone who is part of our “big tent” feel part of our family. Our friend and congregant Cheryl Rose will talk to us about the everyday victories that are being won daily in our LGBTQ community and the extraordinary change that is possible when we act collectively and support one another. We are so grateful to Jody and Jeff Scheiman and Randy Arndt for hosting this awesome yearly event. Pride Shabbat is a moment to recognize how very blessed we are by the rainbow that is our congregation. When our souls need to rest and take a long sip of life-sustaining nourishment, we know that we can stop here, feel safe, and be welcomed and loved. Temple Israel has always had its doors wide open to anyone who ever felt parched by the wilderness that is life. All who are thirsty should come quench their thirst with these life-giving waters of friendship, hope, equality, and community, and feel full of pride as we celebrate each other. L’Shalom,

Rabbi Sharon Mars

Education Religious School

If a Pharaoh's throne had been schlepped from the Silverman home and the Patten-Friedman and Anger families had spent Sunday morning setting up...

Dayenu! It would have been enough! If David Altman had painted a wall sized mural and hung it single handedly, and Adam Solomon, Bobbi Jacobs, Seth Kutzen, Michelle Isroff, Beth and Daniel Stelzer, Kim Croffoot-Suede and Jennah Scher had given up their time to set up...

Dayenu! It would have been enough! If every member of the Temple Israel Staff had found a way in which to help and Zach had become Pharaoh, Ken Cohen — Moses, Cantor Moses — Miriam, and Rabbi Mars — Aaron...

Dayenu! It would have been enough! If Eran Rosenberg had generously loaned his collection of precious hand made biblical costumes from Israel and Dana Becker had cut 140 Israelite head wraps...

Dayenu! It would have been enough! But, we were fortunate to have all of these skilled hands on deck, and the amazing Religious School teachers to participate in making this year's Passover Experience the best one yet! See for yourself!

Sacred Work: Repairing Our Torahs On Tuesday, April 2nd Temple Israel welcomed Rabbi Menacham Bialo to the JCC. Rabbi Bialo is a Sofer. A sofer is a Jewish scribe – who is specially trained to transcribe holy documents like mezuzot, tefillin, and sifrei Torah. Rabbi Bialo evaluated three of the Torahs we are keeping at the JCC. He spent one entire day sewing, cleaning, patching and trimming. I found it fascinating to learn, that at a glance Rabbi Bialo could tell the origin of a Torah by the style of writing and the treatment of the parchment. He

identified two of the Torahs as German and the other as Sephardic (from the Iberian peninsula) in origin. Rabbi Bialo could date the German Torahs, and advised that one was written around the turn of the century, just before 1900. The other Torah appears to have been written around 1920, and is mounted on replacement poles, suggesting that it was carried by someone to America.

Temple Israel is proudly home to NINE Sefrei Torah’s including our Holocaust Torah from what is now the Czech Republic. We have been blessed during this transition to have each of our Torahs in synagogues across the Columbus Jewish community. We are grateful to Temple Beth Shalom, Congregation Beth Tikvah, Agudas Achim, the Columbus Museum of Art, and the Columbus Jewish Day School, for lovingly housing our Torahs during this time. Having Rabbi Bialo was such a learning experience for me, personally. He shared a bit about the history and his methods of work. It was such a neat feeling to compare them side by side and the nuance of a truly living book with its own story (and not just the Five Books) to share. I was able to capture a few photos of him in action. If you happen to have a historical connection to any of our Torahs, or can help

us learn more about their ancestry, we would love to celebrate and bring your knowledge into our rich archival records. Please contact me at 614.866.0010 ext 115 or by e-mail at [email protected]. I am honored to serve the congregation in such a meaningful way. Thank you for allowing me to be your eyes and ears for this experience. — Jennah Scher, Executive Director

In Our Community

This was a once in a lifetime moment, and I am proud of the work we have achieved and the vision we have outlined. I embrace the ongoing work necessary to move into our new home. Your overwhelming generosity has been most humbling, at every juncture, and it has been my most supreme honor to serve our membership during this transition. We have the best clergy and the most amazing professional staff. Ever. A new Board will be installed under the leadership of Amy Weisbach who will be great! I hope you will join us on this amazing journey. Committees are being established. Boxes will need to be unpacked. There is much work to do. While my title is changing, our (Harriette and my) work is not over. I will continue to serve the congregation as Immediate Past-President and we will continue the work of the Building Committee until we walk our Torahs into 3100 East Broad Street. Together. With much love and gratitude,

(President’s Message continued from page 2)

Temple Israel Foundation Planning Ahead

Here’s what a few of Temple Israel Foundation’s Legacy members* have to say about how and why they became Legacy members.…

*A Legacy member is one who has taken action to secure Temple Israel’s future through promises in one of the following ways: making a deferred gift by naming Temple Israel in his/her will or naming Temple Israel as the beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement plan.

Laura & Paul Greenland – “We wanted…to make an impact on Temple’s future but were not in a position to ‘plunk down’ a large sum of money to create a special fund. So we purchased a life insurance policy naming Temple Israel Foundation as the insured. Financially, it’s in our comfort zone to write that premium check and it feels so good to do so. This will benefit Temple in the future as a ‘windfall’ to create a fund that will insure that more than double the number of kids can eventually afford to attend Jewish summer camps.” Clemy & Bob Keidan – “Temple is part of our being – that’s why we wanted to find a way to give back. For years, we volunteered in many different capacities, but now we were looking for a way to ‘pay it forward.’ We wanted to make a meaningful financial contribution to Temple Israel in a cost-efficient and tax-efficient way. So we made a Legacy (or deferred) gift to the Temple Israel Foundation by naming the Foundation as a partial beneficiary of Bob’s retirement plan, thus eventually establishing a named fund to support any area of interest.” Ruth Longert – “Alan, z’l, and I had contemplated establishing an unrestricted family fund within the Foundation with our daughter, Audra, for some time. Alan had served as a Temple Israel Foundation trustee and treasurer, and I currently serve as a Foundation trustee and secretary. We understand that the Temple can only be sustained if everyone does his/her part. Our support through a donation and bequest underscores our faith in Temple’s continuing to meet the needs of its members and the community.” If you think you may wish to consider becoming a Legacy member of Temple Israel Foundation and thereby help to secure the future of Temple Israel, feel free to contact Brian Tuckerman, Foundation president, 614-402-0880, or Elaine Tenenbaum, Foundation Executive Director, 614-657-8501.
