President’s Message

I hope all of you had a great Holiday Season and beginning of the

New Year.

First let me issue you a personal invitation to attend our annual spring workshop meeting to be held in Jackson at the War Memorial Building on March 1 9 . V i c e President Janice S t r o h m a n d D i s t r i c t I I I Chairman Celeste Young have worked on this meeting and are to be commended for their hard work. There is more on the workshop in this newsletter. I hope you will make plans to attend and use this meeting as a learning tool and carry the information to your local

chapters.

Plans have been

f ina l i zed fo r ou r convention on the coast and Janice and her committees will have this information ready for you at the Spring

Workshop.

I have had a busy couple of months v i s i t i n g chapters and a t t e n d i n g s p e c i a l f u n c t i o n s around the

state as a representative of our wonderful

organization.

The opening event on Friday, January 28, at the War Memorial Building planned by our 1 5 0 t h A nn i v e rsa r y Counci l was wel l a t t e n d e d . Congratula t ions to Chairman Margaret Murdock and her council for a great beginning to

our observance of the 150th Anniversary of the War Between the States. Lester Senter’s beautiful voice, Grady Howell’s s p e e c h , R i c h a r d Fairchild’s reading of Mississippi’s Session p a p e r s a n d t h e reception afterward made for a wonderful

evening.

Mississippi Division Historian, Stephanie Foley, and I had the pleasure to present a Jefferson Davis Gold Medal to Mrs. Senter that night for her research and recording of Southern music

during the War Period.

Saturday morning started early for several m e m b e r s o f t h e Executive Committee, spouses, children and grandchildren, along with other UDC members

Dear Mississippi Daughters,

I recently wrote that I am not new to the Mississippi Division Children of the Confederacy. However, I have to admit that although I am not new, I am rusty, and I had forgotten about a new process which can affect our membership in the Division. This process involves reinstatement of eligible members on whom per capita was not paid during a previous CofC

year.

Before discussing reinstatement, everyone needs to be reminded that there is a difference between the CofC and UDC methods for paying per

capita. CofC per capita is paid at the end of the year.

This year began June 1, 2010, and it will end May 31, 2011. Per capita for the 2010-2011 year will be submitted with the Chapter reports which the Chapter Director will send to me by June 1, 2011. Unfortunately, for some reason or another, a reinstated member’s per capita may not be submitted

with the Chapter reports for a particular year.

If the member wishes to be reinstated, the Chapter Director must submit a reinstatement form and include $9.00 made payable to Treasurer General, CofC which includes $3.00 for the fee and $6.00 for General per capita. A reinstated member is then handled in the end-of-year reports in the same manner as a new member with respect to submission of per capita. Both a reinstated member and a new member only submit $1.00 for Division per capita at the end of

the year.

The Division due date coincides with end of the school year and the beginning of family vacations. Therefore, Chapter Directors need to begin collecting their members’ per capita now to avoid not being able to collect it before the Chapter report is due. It is a shame to have a great increase in new members, yet have no net increase in Division membership due to per capita not being paid on time. The Division Director, Director General, and CofC Registrar of General are happy to assist any Chapter Director who

has members needing to be reinstated.

Have you heard about the Traveling Pants? Mississippi’s sister state, Georgia, has a pair of pants that they have decorated, taken to their Division and Chapter activities, and sent to our sister Chapter Where No Division in Washington, DC. The pants are expected to arrive in Mississippi in time for our Division Convention in June at which time Mississippi Chapters will add their decorations. The Traveling Pants’ final destination will be General Convention in Tennessee. Each Chapter Director has been sent a


The scent of spring is in the air, and so is the end of another school year. So too, the

submitting of application for a UDC scholarship.

To date, chapters should have received applications from the students they are

sponsoring.

February 15th is the date for chapters to receive applications. Take time to look over the applications before submitting them to me by

March 15th.

Check all the information, clear line of descent from an eligible Confederate ancestor, applicant's birth certificate, head and shoulder photograph, and all letters of endorsement and

forms necessary to complete the application.

Remember, March 15th is my last date to

receive applications.

April Memorial Services.

Please remember to allow six weeks for a Medal to be processed from the time

it is received by the Division Recorder.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, the General M.P. Lowrey 1608 Chapter honored the Tippah County National Guard Unit with a Thank You and

Welcome home dinner.

This unit returned from their second tour in Iraq in May 2010. While deployed the Unit received gifts including Christmas lights, diced peaches,

phone cards, and other items from the Chapter.

Please make sure on any orders - engraved or non-engraved - that you use the newest forms and follow the directions. On engraved, you only order one item at a time and have a separate check for each. Please make sure that you print your name, addresses, etc. on the forms. Remember to send these to your chapter vice presidents who will send them on to me. Please fine the forms and the order of wearing of the insignia list on the UDC

website.

When enclosing the forms and checks, please remember to hold them together with paper

clips. No staples, please!!

Our annual GGD Club meeting was held at the Division Convention in Hattiesburg in October. The Club dues were paid for 73 members to GG Grand-daughters Club General. The elected Division officers for years 2010-2012 are: President, Sandy Gaddis; Vice President, Frances DeLashmint; Treasurer, Susan Easter; and Recording Secretary, Connie Faye Estes. During the meeting a motion was made to give $300.00 to BAB Scholarship Fund which was approved. A few reminders for our Great Great Granddaughters Club members. When you send in the new membership form for a Great Great Granddaughter remember: Make 3 copies of membership application- you keep one for your records, mail 2 copies to GGD Division Treasurer. Record shall be verified first by UDC Chapter Registrar and so noted on form (form available online hqudc.org, go to Clubs link ) The Gen-eral Club form is required. Remember our annual Club dues $2.00 per year. $1.00 goes to General GGD Club and $1.00 is kept in the Division club. Dues are due to Division Club Treasurer no later than July 1no later than July 1no later than July 1no later than July 1. (per Bylaws). Please send one check for all GGGD members and list each

GGGD members' name and your chapter name to GGGD Division Treasurer before July 1. It will help the Treasurer keep more accurate records. Also our dues are due to the General Club by August 31. You can order the GGGD Pin thru Vice President of Division (Order form on UDC website, hqudc.org ) If you would like to order the pin they are $50.00 which can be worn on your ribbon. Grave dedication and memorial service for James Franklin Bailey, Co C / Co I, Ala 6th Infantry, CSA was held on October 9, 2010 in Picayune, MS. Brent Rifles #2137 UDC, together with the 27th MS Honor Guard SCV, Fenner’s LA Battery and the Gainesville

Volunteers SCV hosted this event.

About one hundred Mississippi Daughters, Children, Sons and guests gathered on January 28, 2011, at the War Memorial Building in Jackson, Mississippi, for ceremonies to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Secession of Mississippi. Margaret Murdock, Council Chairman, presided over the evening's program. The evening opened with a reading of the prayer given by Rev. C. K. Marshall of Vicksburg at the opening of Mississippi's Secession Convention which convened in Jackson in January 1861. His prayer implored God to help the delegates to the convention to “bury party animosities, to forget past controversies of party, and go forth in the faithful performal of the high and holy duties which are

now their special care.”

The flags of Mississippi, the Confederacy and the

United States were presented by a uniformed color guard. Members of the color guard were Jason, Nathan and John Hemphill. Representatives of the General Organizations of the UDC and Children of the Confederacy (CofC) led the patriotic ritual. Participating were Ruth Allbritton, Vice President General UDC, who led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America; Mabel Clark, Honorary President of General UDC, who led the Salute to the Confederate Flag; and Richard Fairchild, Ex President General CofC, who led the Salute to the State Flag of

Mississippi.

Greetings and well wishes for a successful event and sesquicentennial programming were given by Frances Woodruff, Mississippi UDC President; Augusta Williams, Mississippi CofC President; and Larry McCluney, Army of Tennessee Councilman SCV, on behalf of Bill Atkinson, Mississippi SCV Commander. The Mississippi Division Children of the Confederacy®®®® of the United Daughters of the Confederacy® will hold its 60th Annual Division Convention on June 3-4, 2011, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Hosts for the con-vention are the Margaret Davis Hayes Chapter 520 CofC and Beauvoir Chapter 621 UDC of Gulfport. Members of the CofC, UDC, SCV and MOSB and guests are invited to register and attend all events. When making reservations, ask for the block reserved for "UDC MISSISSIPPI" to obtain the convention rate. Room rates are $119 for up to four persons per room. You will be charged for any room reservation not cancelled 48 hours in advance. If you wish to stay additional nights, the rate on Thursday, September 29, will be $119 and on October 2 and 3 will be $129. Rooms must be reserved by Wednesday, September 7, 2011, to assure rate and availability. Other nights would be at regular rates offered by the hotel for those nights. All room rates are subject to 12% tax. Each person is responsible for making her own reservation. It is recommended that you make your reservations as soon as possible.

the first of two Musical Interludes by Dr. Lester Senter, Mezzo Soprano, and accompanist, Coleman Pearce. D r . S e n t e r i s a n accomplished and talented musician. She has appeared with leading o p e r a c o m p a n i e s throughout the United States and Europe. Among the awards that she has received are the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, an Award of Merit from the Mississippi Historical Society for her work in producing the serires “Sundays at the Manship House”, and a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association of State and Local Historians, also for her work at the Manship House. Dr. Senter has conducted extensive research into 19th Century music, paying particular attention to the collections housed at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Old Courthouse Museum at Vicksburg. Over the course of her career, she has recorded ten CD's; among them are The Owl and the Pussy Cat and other Songs from the Collection of Mrs. Jefferson Davis, Somebody's Darling (music associated with the Battle of Raymond and the Siege of Vicksburg), Florida's Songbook (music from the collecting of Miss Florida Davis, the niece of Jefferson Davis), Lovely Ladies and their Lyrics (collection of 19th Century songs). Dr. Senter presented selections from and related to the War Between the States, including a

rousing rendition of “Goober Peas” and “Dixie”!

Keynote speaker for the evening was H. Grady Howell, Jr. Without a doubt Mr. Howell is one of the preeminent historians in Mississippi and of Mississippi history. A native of Biloxi, H. Grady Howell, Jr., served in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in history from Southeastern Louisiana University and possesses diplomas in Archivy from Emory University and the Georgia Department of Archives and History as well as from the National Archives. He has published 19 books referencing Mississippi's involvement in the Mexican War and in the War Between the State. His most recent work, released just this month, is entitled THE BUTTON JAR – MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD ON

BACK BAY OF BILOXI. Grady is a member of the Jefferson Davis Camp #635 SCV of Jackson. Grady has been awarded the UDC's Cross of Military Service for his honorable service in Vietnam and also the UDC's Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal for his historic research and writing. Mr. Howell spoke on the lead up to secession in Mississippi and the myriad of factors and causes that brought

about such a momentous vote.

CofC Ex President General Richard Fairchild read the Ordinance of Secession as passed by the Mississippi Secession Convention on 9 January 1861. The Ordinance was the legal document by which the State of Mississippi formally severed its ties with the United States of America. Mississippi's secession started a chain of events in the life of one of Mississippi's favorite sons that culminated in his inauguration as President of the Confederacy. A noted and talented legislator, Jefferson Davis was forced to resign his seat in the United States Senate upon the secession of his home state. His farewell address is one of the most respected addresses ever given in the well of the

Senate. Army of Tennessee Councilman Larry McCluney read

excerpt from that address.

The evening wrapped up with the presentation of a Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal to Dr. Lester Senter. Dr. Senter was most surprised and much honored by the award. A reception for all followed.

The wine and cheese reception featured a centerpiece of callo lilies arranged in a cut glass vase with silver

candelabra on each side.

The event was sponsored by the Division's 150th Anniversary Council. Serving on the Council are Ruth Allbritton, Cynthia Blalock, Vivian Dailey, Susan Dunn, Judy Goodin, Sylvia Knight , Pam Mauldin, and Peggy McCullough, with Margaret Murdock as Chairman. The Council is responsible for planning the Division's commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of

the War Between the States.

should be a fun activity.

I will close with a few reminders. We need new members, and we are nowhere near having the number of new members our Division CofC President set as our goal. Don’t forget the CofC President General’s worthy activities and projects for supporting our active members of the military and our Veterans. Our 60th Annual Division Convention will be held the

first week-end in June. Start making plans now to be

on the coast!

and husbands as we toured the Vicksburg Battlefield Museum, the Old Courthouse Museum, the Military Park and the City Cemetery’s Confederate Cemetery. It was a perfect day with sunshine and warm temperatures. One of the highlights was the search for the memorial gravesite of “Old Douglas” the camel

who was the mascot for the 43rd Mississippi Infantry.

On February 18, several members from District I and II were in Oxford where we went to lunch with the Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson and toured the lot we gave to the city. The deed for the gift of the property from us to the city was signed and filed in January. The city going to develop this property as a walking area for

the citizens of Oxford.

The General office in Richmond has sent several names of ladies in Mississippi to me who want to join the UDC and I have forwarded the names on to chapters near their homes. I hope all Mississippi Chapters are actively seeking out new members.

Several chapters have told me they are also looking for people to receive the different awards presented by

our organization. I know of Winnie Davis, Judah P. Benjamin, and

Crosses of Military Service that are in the works now.

Political signs are sprouting up everywhere now, so I must caution you to remember we are a non- political organization. You are free to support any candidate of your choice but not at UDC meetings or functions. You are not to invite politicians to speak at meetings or at any of your sponsored events on behalf of their candidacy as this may cause us to lose our 501-3C tax exemption or we could even be sanctioned by the General UDC Organization. Let’s all be on our p’s and q’s as there are already rumblings about the 150th Anniversary of the War cropping up across the nation. Remember we are proud Southern Ladies of the UDC

and will smile politely as we calmly disagree.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Jackson in a

few weeks.
