President’s Message by: Gene Insley April has been a sad month for our PCC family with the passing of Jim DeCarlo and Lynn Peterson’s serious illness. Our fellow members are frequently on our minds for the company we share but never so much as when they and their families are in need of our thoughts and prayers. We’re thinking of you! Many events are on the near horizon and we are all looking forward to our usual high levels of participation. These events are a great way to meet new and existing members in a fun and relaxed way. If any questions exist on what is planned and how you can participate check the calendar on the web-site or let Ken James know if you need any direction. We all extend a special “welcome back” to Don and Karen Thompson (along with their new C7) and a hardy welcome to prospective members Dave Hennings, Steve Perry and Rick and Marcey Alpert. A Word From Our Vice President Ken James

Are you interested in hosting an event for the club? Great! Here is what you need to do:

1) Upon making a decision to host an event please email me with the date of the proposed event to ensure there is no other club event already planned for that day or weekend.

2) Email me the details and any flyer, registration forms or website links to be added to the PCC Calendar.

3) Email a reminder to club members with meeting details/information one week prior to the event. (Note: On page 19 of the PCC Rules Book is a list of items that may help you get

organized. Also, keep in mind that the club has plenty of folks including myself who have

held events and are willing to assist you with your event…so relax & have fun doing it).

I will:

1) Announce your event at the monthly meeting. 2) Create signup sheets (and scan them after each meeting and send you a copy) 3) Send all your info to the PCC Webmaster for posting on the PCC Calendar. 4) Provide any assistance I can to you.

Don’t forget to use the “Events” tab at www.socalcarculture.com to find local car

events and the “Clubs” tab to check out other Corvette Clubs to see if they have

any events coming up that you or PCC would enjoy.

There are three types of people, those who can count and those who cannot.

Longing for a Vette by: Mark and Pattie Smith

During my teenage years, I was excited every time I would see a Corvette. I knew

nothing about the mechanics of the car, only that it was fast and looked cool. I tried to

talk my parents into helping me buy a Corvette during my senior year in high school.

The result was a test drive in a nice 63 corvette, but no success in owning it. Instead, I

had to settle for the family 57 Ford station wagon.

As you can imagine, the interest in Corvettes, and owning one did not fade away. I

would go to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego to watch sport car racing on a track

set up in the parking area. The Cobra was king at that time, and the Corvettes could

not beat them, It did not matter, I was still a Corvette fan.

After graduating, I worked at a Jack in the Box restaurant. I attended San Diego State

with thoughts of becoming a Chemist. But, at the time, Jack in the Box offered a leasing

program for young employees that demonstrated interest and acumen in restaurant

operations. Leasing meant a better income, so I determined I should learn all I could

about the business and apply for a lease once I turned 21.

About this time, Pattie and I were married (childhood sweet hearts). We were not

making good income, but kept moving toward our goal of leasing our own business.

The hard work paid off, and soon we were in business. Leasing a Jack in the Box

restaurant greatly improved our income.

It did not take long until the Corvette bug was back itching away at me. I now had little

time, but enough income to seriously look at the new “68” Corvette. I bought a black on

black Corvette with the 435 HP option with Tri-power. It had all the race stuff you could

get from Chevrolet short of the L-88 motor. That year you could not order the L-88 in a

car with a radio ?? I was too naive to push the issue. It took about 4 months for the

Corvette to get to the dealer. Happy days, I had my first Vette.

Time went on and modifications to the car started. You know how this

goes…………..need a bigger carburetor, need a bigger cam, need those Goodyear race

tires in the wet compound etc.. Then, I found out about a driving school offered by

SCCA. You could learn to drive your car on several of the race tracks in the area.

Wow, that was for me.

Funny how you start with something that is basically a street car until everything on the

track is passing you. It was really funny: You think you are a fast driver, Right ? Then,

you get out on a track like the old Riverside Raceway and all these well prepared TR-3’s

and little Porsches are blowing you off the track. Amazing what suspension preparation

and road race knowledge can do for your track times.

P a g e | 12 Corvette Waves April 2014

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Well as you might guess,

soon everything not

needed in the car was torn

out to make her lighter.

Professional suspension

and roll cage were added.

Race slicks found their way

on the car. Non ending

motor modifications,

especially after you blew

one up. Pretty soon, you

had to trailer her to the

events because she was

highly illegal to drive on the

highway. Sound familiar ?

At some point, all good things come to an end. The increase in costs through the 70’s

took the fun out of racing. You were more worried about what you would break vs. how

much fun and enjoyment racing the car was. It was time to park the car and hope you

could run her in an occasional “old timers” event. Hence, the Vette that helped you live

your teenage dreams was destined to be a garage storage item for over 30 years.

Perhaps you can imagine daily driving without the feel

of a Corvette. We no longer had sufficient income to

be able to afford the increasing costs of a Corvette.

Plus, I was driving 120 miles a day for work, too many

miles to put on a Corvette. I never forgot the feeling

of getting behind the wheel and squeezing the “loud”

pedal, but had to do without. Plus, what Corvette

could you buy at the time that would come close to

the thrill of your race car?

The years past, and soon I was thinking of retirement. I saved as much money as

possible thinking perhaps there could be one last big purchase. The quandary was

what Corvette was available that would let me feel like I had my race car once again,

but could drive it on the street. Well, it had to be black. It had to have some HP. And, it

had to have superior handling. I searched through web sites to determine what was

available in new Corvettes. In February, 2013, I decided on a 2013 Z06 with the Z07

Ultimate Performance Package. This package includes Brembo Ceramic Brakes, PS

Cup Tires, Carbon Fiber Package, Magnetic Selective Ride Control (including Tour and

Sport Settings), larger Cup Style Wheels, Wider Tires, and Performance Track

P a g e | 13 Corvette Waves April 2014

Management. To my surprise, I could not order the car because all specialty Corvette

production was stopped to tool up for the new 2014’s. There were only 2 Corvettes in

the country that matched my options. Luckily, I was able to successfully deal for one of

them.

Pattie and I are very happy with our new Corvette. She keeps me driving it more miles

than I would like. But, after all the years without a Corvette to drive, I don’t complain too

much.

We look forward to new Corvette adventures with PCC. The club seems to offer a

variety of fun events. See Y’all there !

VETTE SET CAR SHOW By: Gail Latimer

April 5, 2014

On a bright, sunny April morning, 7 PCC cars with 10 members left Orange County for

Redondo Beach. Four people met early and stopped for breakfast first. Everyone else

wanted to save their appetite for Ruby’s Diner.

Ed Baumgarten & I met in Huntington Beach and cruised up to the venue where we

found Paul Kerper (green big block ‘67) on the phone. My guess was it was his pal

Harry Reiger (63 split window fuelie - from last year’s corvette calendar) that he was

talking to because I knew they were coming in together and Harry wasn’t there. Sure

enough, we found out Harry somehow ended up at Terminal Island! The breakfast

bunch came in next, Sue & Jim DiCarlo and Steve Powers & Diane Dailey. We 6 were

parked in a row right outside the front of Ruby’s. Perfect spot!

About 10 minutes later Henry & Becky Lewis showed up in Henry’s 2011 Camaro. I

didn’t know they were coming, or I would have saved another spot for them. Even

funnier, about 10 minutes after that, both Vicki & Mark Alter showed up with a C6 Pace

Car.

After picking up my goody bag and putting the dash

card on the windshield, I realized I’d signed up the

2012 and drove the 1965. Oops! It didn’t matter to

the judges; they just judged what they saw.

There were some amazing cars at the show. I didn’t

get pictures of all of them. I purposely didn’t take one

of the C5 they guy tried to make look like a Ferrari - it

was too scary! It had a great big scorpion as a hood

ornament - no class. One C6 I liked was orange and

there was a picture of the car itself inside the hood.

Now that is awesome!

All in all it was a wonderful day. The weather was

absolutely perfect, some of us thought right there at

the water’s edge, it would be cold or windy, but it was

not. Ruby’s goody bag had some car products in it and a hat from JEGS (it might show

up as a raffle gift soon) and some coupons for a free milk shake at Ruby’s and 10% off

lunch. A group of us decided to go next door to a fish place and not have lunch at

Ruby’s. I think it was a good decision.

P a g e | 15 Corvette Waves April 2014

_____________________________________________________________________________________

The first trophy won by a PCC member was Henry & Becky’s camaro. I know that

made Henry proud. In the C6 category, both Mark & Vicki won, again that makes them

happy. The C2 category was won by both Harry (1st) and Paul (2nd).

The only “bad” part of this show is the crowds leaving the parking lot all at once. There

are two sides to go out and the ticket takers have to let you out one car at a time.

Ruby’s validated our parking, so really all they had to do was open the gate and have

someone just take the tickets and drive on out! It took me nearly 15 minutes to exit and

my car didn’t like all that sitting and idling. I had to restart it at least 10 times! Whew, it

was an ordeal!

National Corvette Museum Extraction Complete

By: Ellis Delameter

It was reported on April 9th, that the recovery of the last of the “Great Eight” (as now

described by the National Corvette Museum), had been recovered.

Having visited the National Corvette Museum (NCM) and Corvette Assembly Plant in

Bowling Green, Kentucky, I was very interested in following the recovery process of the

8 Corvettes from the bottom of a 40 ft. x 60 ft. sink hole.

You have probably read the news releases on the collapse of a portion of the Skydome

floor on February 14 and the sudden disappearance of 8 pristine, “one-of-a-kind

Corvettes, 2 of which were on loan from the General and 6 which were owned by the

Museum.

For those of you who have not followed the story, the Corvettes lost were as follows:

1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from GM (only one every produced)

2009 ZR-1 “Blue Devil” on loan from GM

1962 Black Corvette Roadster

1984 PPG Pace Car

1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette

1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette (sorry Harold and Cheryl)

2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette

2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette

It has been very interesting to follow the video and news releases published by the

NCM. Initially the construction company contracted for the recovery utilized a quad

copter to examine the sink hole for developing a strategy for the recovery process. The

video could be viewed with startling images of the Corvettes, which appeared like

crumpled toys. One of the first videos released by the museum showed the lifting of the

“Blue Devil” and after hooking up a battery charger, started the car and started to drive it

out of the building. Unfortunately, a serious oil leak occurred and the car was shut

down.

The rest of the Corvettes were lifted out one-by-one. In some cases, this could be done

only after working around large pieces of concrete and boulders. During the process,

the location of the seventh and eighth cars; the 1.5 Millionth and the Mallett Hammer

Corvette were unknown. However with the removal of the 6th car, the Spyder, the

P a g e | 18 Corvette Waves April 2014

_____________________________________________________________________________________

construction team found evidence of the 1.5 Millionth Corvette and with additional

searching eventually found and removed the 8th Corvette.

It has been reported that GM will assign a specialty team to rebuild all 8 Corvettes. This

will be a huge challenge (see attached pictures). In the interim, a special display of the

“sinkhole Corvettes will be viewable through August 3rd, then to be moved into the

restored Skydome to be displayed through the Museum’s 20th Anniversary Event, on

August 27-30th.

If you are interested additional photos, videos and information is available on the

Museum’s website at www.corvettemuseum.org.
