6. The Pediatric Orthopaedic fellowship match process is progressing nicely. We currently have 87 applicants for 64 positions.

7. We mourn the death of Robert Salter (May 2010). We also celebrate his life, his many contributions to POSNA, and to the patients he served.

8. Accomplishing the mission of POSNA requires substantial work from individual members through our committee structure. For any member who would like to be involved with POSNA committee work, please apply now. An email was recently sent to all POSNA members from Peter Waters seeking interested parties (see below). If you are interested, now is the time to volunteer.

Congratulations and thank you go to Teri Stech, Cristina Cabral and Melody Raymond for their ongoing support of our society. They have a great deal to do with our organizational success. On behalf of the Presidential line, Board of Directors, and POSNA Headquarters we wish you all a happy and healthy new year and look forward to seeing you in Montreal. Sincerely yours, Jim Roach

Seeking New Committee Members Dear POSNA members, All of us know that the success, and effectiveness, of our society depends on the active participation by our members. Perhaps one of the most important ways to participate is by serving as a committee member on one of the 30 current functioning POSNA committees. Time and again, we’ve seen tremendous accomplishments by our society when enthusiastic committee members work together to complete their charges. Every year, new needs are identified, new committee charges are generated, and new challenges are presented. Currently, about 190 committee positions exist and a high percentage of these are open this year for POSNA volunteers. Every year, there is some turnover in nearly every committee which results in one or two positions becoming available per committee. I encourage all of you who are interested in participating, particularly younger members, to review the enclosed list of committees, mark those that you might have an interest in, and forward that information back to POSNA by Feb. 1, 2011. *Please note: per policy and procedures, a person may serve on no more than two committees.

Prior to, and during the annual meeting, the Board will review those who are interested in committee positions, will try to accommodate requests, and will assign new members to available committee positions. Shortly after the annual meeting, a new list of committee members, new committee chairs, and new charges will sent out to the membership. Thanks to all of you. See you in Montreal. Peter Waters, MD President-Elect POSNA POSNA 2011 Annual Meeting Join us in Montreal for the 2011 POSNA Annual Meeting, May 11-14, 2011 at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth.

Letter from the Chair By James McCarthy On behalf of the program committee, Steve Frick, Tracy Ballock, Mike Vitale and myself, it is my honor to invite you to attend the 2011 Annual Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America meeting in Montreal, Canada May 11-14, 2011. This year’s annual meeting will build on a long tradition of presenting cutting edge research and new techniques in a format that allows for plenty of discussion and interaction. This year’s meeting has received a record number of abstracts all which have been outstanding in quality. A wide spectrum of pediatric musculoskeletal disorders will be presented and discussed in over 93 podium presentations, 20 posters and 75 e-posters. In addition to the scientific meeting, a special topic section will be presented on Saturday with the focus on healthcare reform that assesses and compares current models in Canada and Massachusetts, to the new healthcare reform recently passed in the United States. Montreal should prove to be an outstanding venue for this meeting. The meeting is at the Queen Elizabeth hotel which serves as a central access to all the greater Montreal attractions. Our local hosts, Francois Fassier and Hubert Labelle, have worked hard to prepare an outstanding social program. Please do not miss this wonderful opportunity. Sincerely, James J. McCarthy, M.D. FAAOS, FAAP 2010 POSNA Program Chair

2011 One Day Course “Evidence Based Medicine” provokes feelings ranging from dread to outrage among many pediatric orthopaedists. What is this Big Bad concept in reality? Is it going to take away your autonomy or provide you with better tools to care for your patients? This course will provide the instruction you need in evidence based medicine to understand EBM and apply it to pediatric orthopaedics. The course will also identify the trends in society and medicine mak ing EBM important and provide practical methods to incorporate EBM into your daily practice. The course will particularly emphasize com mon problems in pediatric orthopaedics including fractures, hip prob-lems, scoliosis, and cerebral palsy with an outstanding faculty. If you want to know how to find the best treatments for your patients, this course is for you. It will have information useful for everyone from experienced surgeons to fellows, residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who care for children with pediatric orthopaedic conditions. The syllabus should be a great reference on how to use the tools of EBM in your care of patients.

Welcome to Montreal, Quebec, Canada By Francois Fassier, MD and Hubert Labelle, MD (local hosts)

The world’s second-largest French-speaking city, Montréal, has accrued a reputation for its welcoming lifestyle and the dazzling arsenal of, world-calibre events that continue to exceed expectations. Where else in North America can delegates participate in such a unique multi-lingual environment, whose European accents of culture, history, and architecture are matched in equal measure by great food and joie de vivre?

Montréal was ranked among the top three destinations in North America for international conventions, a testament to its above-average expertise and service, and ability to accommodate any group size. Montréal’s off-site venues are no less unique. Elegance, history, innovation and romance are part of the very stonework of places like Windsor Station, Marché Bonsecours, Pointe-à-Callières Museum and the Chalet du Mont-Royal, atop the mountain. They’re just the ticket for an intimate cocktail reception, banquet, or theatre-style event. And Wi-Fi is there, wherever you need it. At last count, Montréal boasted 6,000 restaurants representing 80 cuisines. At the top of the food chain, and winner of the AAA 5-diamond award since 2000, is Nuances, in the Casino de Montréal. But this city eats well as a matter of course. Food has become simply another art form, with local and international chefs transforming locally grown produce into medal-winning statements. Daring to reinvent is de rigueur, as chefs take tried-and-true recipes from our grandmothers’ kitchens and top them up with 21st-century finesse, or give global dishes a uniquely Montréal twist. From laidback eateries to bring-your-own-wine restaurants to five-star restaurants, Montréal continues to keep foodies raving about its culinary charms, which spread out city-wide. Shoppers will want to start with Sainte-Catherine Street and its 1,200 boutiques of fashion, sports goods and home furnishings. Take your buying pursuits into Montréal’s Underground Pedestrian Network, with its 32 kilometres of brightly-lit passageways that connect you with 1,700 more boutiques, as well as the Convention Centre. Museum-goers will face tough choices with the wealth of exhibition spaces that tell the tales of this unique city. Abundant parks dot the city’s landscape. Considered the lungs of the city, Mount Royal gives joggers, walkers and cyclists plenty of breathing room, and BIXI, the city’s public bike service – the first of its kind in North America - gets you rolling with a quick swipe of your credit card. Water sports enthusiasts can jet boat on the Lachine Rapids, cruise the St. Lawrence River, ride our legendary standing waves or find a nearby conservation area in which to navigate a sea kayak. Montréal is home to the oldest golf club in North America, the Royal Montréal Golf Club, host of the prestigious President’s Cup in 2007. Delegates can tee off from more than 12 city courses, all within 20 minutes of downtown. Hundreds of other challenging provincial fairways and available tee times are listed at golfexpressquebec.com. (The province boasts 397 golf courses in all!) Your preferred relaxation may also take the form of a body treatment at one of many spas. A Turkish steam bath, Vichy rain massage, or maple sugar body scrub can be your key to a new outlook on life. Montréal has a cosmopolitan reputation other cities yearn for. Undeniably, its 360 years of history are at the root; the city has been in turn a French settlement and a British

stronghold. Today, the confluence of cultures from around the globe continues to leave its mark on Montréal’s multifaceted and spirited character. For a meeting with the city’s past, stroll the cobblestone streets of Old Montréal and admire its architecture; the area is now home to boutique hotels and award-winning addresses that bring luxury to new heights. Its galleries, churches, squares and quiet spaces make it only one of many fascinating neighbourhoods worth exploring on foot.

POSNA Member Alert: GoreTex Cast Liner Factory ClosesThe Gore Company has decided to close their factory which currently makes GoreTex cast liners. POSNA and the Gore Company have had several discussions regarding the significant patient care issues that will result from eliminating GoreTex liners. These discussions will continue but at this point it is uncertain if the company will reverse their decision. The Gore Company has offered to fill all liner orders until January 1, 2012. A potential alternative product, Delta-Dry, has been identified and is available from BSN Medical, 5825 Carnegie Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28209-4633 Tel 800 552-1157. The decision of whether or not this product is a suitable cast liner is at this moment unknown and will be determined by individual treating physicians.

Advocacy Committee News:By Dan Green, MD In 2011 POSNA leadership will be participating in two separate events in Washington DC advocating for improved funding for pediatric musculoskeletal care and research. The First meeting will occur in March, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Research Capitol Hill Days, an annual event promoting federal funding for musculoskeletal research, gives physicians, researchers, and patients the opportunity to meet with targeted Senators and Representatives to personally advocate for the future of musculoskeletal care. This year POSNA is sponsoring a surgeon and pediatric patient to participate and discuss the challenges and advances in the treatment of severe Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Further innovations will require an investment in both basic science and clinical research. Last year 70 orthopaedic patients, surgeons, and researchers met with U.S. Senators and Representatives to personally advocate for the future of musculoskeletal care and stress the importance of continued support of research funding during this AAOS sponsored event. In April, POSNA leaders will participate in the AAOS National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference (NOLC) with the goal to “Ensuring Quality Orthopaedic Health Care for Our Patients.” During this meeting members of the AAOS Board of Councilors (BOC) and Board of Specialty Societies (BOS) will meet with AAOS Leadership and Federal Legislators to advocate for Orthopaedic Health Care issues. POSNA is also partnering with the AAOS DC office to advocate for improved Medicaid reimbursement for pediatric care, facilitate FDA approval of pediatric implants, and promote improved disaster response planning by the federal government. Please forward your advocacy concern to POSNA at [email protected]

Disaster Preparedness & Children POSNA supports the findings of the National Commission on Children and Disasters and its 2010 Report to the President and Congress. Recent disasters have highlighted the need to improve the gaps in preparedness, response and recovery policies that should specifically address the needs of children.

Mark Shriver, chairperson of the Commission is a strong advocate for “a cohesive national strategy that addresses the unique needs of children and incorporates them into disaster plans”. Some of the recommendations made by the National Commission on Children and Disasters include that the Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Defense (DOD) “should enhance the pediatric capabilities of their disaster medical response teams through the integration of pediatric-specific training, guidance, exercises, supplies, and personnel. HHS should develop pediatric capabilities within each National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) region. HHS should establish a “reserve pool” of pediatric health care workers to assist in NDMS disaster response. HHS and DoD should establish a Pediatric Health Care Coordinator on each disaster medical response team and develop strategies to recruit and retain team members with pediatric medical expertise.” Other recommendations by the commission include:

•The President should develop a National Strategy for Children and Disasters.

•The Executive Branch, Congress, and non-Federal partners should prioritize children separately from “at risk” population categories.

•The Executive Branch at all levels of government should establish and maintain permanent focal points of coordination for children and disasters, supported by sufficient authority, funding, and policy expertise.

•The Executive Branch and non-Federal partners should incorporate children as a distinct priority in base disaster planning documents and relevant grant programs.

•The Executive Branch and non-Federal partners should incorporate children as a distinct priority in relevant target capabilities, preparedness training, and exercises, with specific target outcomes and performance measures.”

News From Our Committees continued... The 2011 Distinguished Achievement Award recipient is Charles T. Price, MD. Chad has provided years of leadership to POSNA both as a President of the organization and subsequently by representing POSNA in multiple educational venues at the AAOS. Chad rejuvenated the Tachjidan Pediatric Orthopaedic Course and turned it into the immensely successful International Pediatric Orthopaedic Symposium (IPOS), a teaching course with a worldwide reputation for excellence. Chad is a perfect choice to receive the 2011 Distinguished Achievement Award. POSNA Humanitarian Award This new POSNA award is given to an individual of any age whose efforts to improve the lives of children have been judged to be exceptional. The 2011 Humanitarian Award Recipient is Kaye E. Wilkins, MD. Kaye has traveled and lectured on pediatric orthopaedics in too many countries to even begin to list. Through this extensive teaching effort, Kaye has served to improve the education of international physicians and thus the care of children worldwide. It is very fitting that Kaye receives the new POSNA Humanitarian Award. POSNA Special Effort and Excellence AwardThis is also a new POSNA award and is given to a younger individual, typically under 45 years old, to acknowledge the recipient’s special efforts and accomplishments on behalf of the mission of POSNA. The 2011 Special Effort and Excellence Award Recipient is Todd A. Milbrandt, MD. While a candidate member Todd assumed the role of Chair of the POSNA Internet Committee and completely redesigned the POSNA website. Under Todd’s leadership this work was mostly accomplished internally and at a substantially cost to POSNA, i.e. less than 50K. POSNA had commercial bids for the work that ranged from slightly over 100K to more than 450K. While still just a candidate member, Todd’s exceptional work reflects the type of effort that the POSNA Board of Directors wants to recognize with the new Special Effort and Excellence Award. Please join the Board of Directors in congratulating each of these worthy individuals. pre-conference workshops on pediatric trauma, foot& ankle and sports medicine along with an advanced workshop on early-onset scoliosis. At our three such prior meetings, several of you participated. We were well received and had an excellent educational and cultural experience. The format typically includes a series of lectures, debates and case discussions with active participation from the Indian faculty. These are extremely engaging conferences and we not only contributed, but learned a lot from our counterparts. This year, we are again looking for several POSNA and EPOS members to travel to this beautiful location in western India about 100 miles east of Mumbai. The POSI hosts will take care of local travel arrangements and lodging in Pune, once you land in Mumbai, India. The overseas travel up to Mumbai will be the responsibility of the visiting faculty. The final choice of invited faculty will be based on input from the Indian hosts. I will be happy to discuss the details of the trip with anyone who is interested. Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society The annual APOS meeting in 2010 was a great success with North American visitors Hank Chambers, Bill Cole and George Rab joining us in sunny Queensland for a living meeting. Once again the APOS meeting was preceded with the two-day instructional course that we run yearly that is aimed at registrars and generalist orthopaedic surgeons. Because of the vast geographic size of Australia a good deal of paediatric orthopaedic management is still undertaken by generalists. The syllabus is run over 2 years and we are now into our eighth year of the program. This year the course will be in Sydney on August 12 and 13. We are extremely excited about the upcoming combined APOS- POSNZ (Paediatric Orthopaedic Society of New Zealand) meeting in Tuaranga New Zealand October 7th and 8th 2011. The special focus of this meeting will be on “Orthopaedic Problems in Adolescence” and “Sports Medicine in Adolescence”. Dan Sucato will be the guest lecturer with a mixture of highly regards Australian and New Zealand speakers. The combined meeting is always a highlight as it is a small enough meeting for all to speak up and yet brings together a very experienced group of paediatric orthopaedic surgeons. The combined paediatric orthopaedic meeting will be followed by the combined “AOA-NZOA” meeting in nearby Rotorua from October 9 to 14. POSNA members are invited to come down for what will be both an excellent educational experience as well as a great social get together. Gary Nattrass President APOS

Dr. Robert Salter AuditoriumDr. Robert Salter was one of the most significant figures in the history of pediatric orthopaedic surgery. Throughout the course of his 55-year career at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, he practiced and promoted the concept of innovation, research, and education to improve the quality of care that children receive and influence the training of surgeons worldwide. Given Dr. Salter’s deep commitment to research and education, the Division of Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Sick Children has developed The Salter Initiative to create a living legacy honoring his many contributions. The Initiative aims to raise $5 million to name the Dr. Robert B. Salter Auditorium in the SickKids Research and Learning Tower. This 21-storey state-of-the-art building will consolidate all of SickKids Research Institute’s operations, allowing researchers dedicated to advancing child health to work in one setting. The Auditorium, with a seating capacity of 250, will be used for large-scale conferences and presentations. Please consider giving a gift in support of his memory. Checks can be made out to: SickKids Foundation Memo: The Salter Initiative 525 University Ave, 14th Floor Toronto, ON M5G 2L3 Canada Attn: Sara Byrnell For American Residents who wish to receive an official IRS income tax receipt, please contact Sara Byrnell at [email protected] or 416-813-6166 ext. 2322.
