The summer months are full of activity and traditions: weddings, teachers being one year closer to retirement after they complete another term of working with students, promotion ceremonies, as well as graduations from high school or college. Kids are out of school for the summer, and for my family, three of us have birthdays. With this in mind, I am going to piggy-back on Thelma’s Presidential theme, “Each One Teach One”, but I am going to add to that as well, “ Each One Meet One.” What a wonderful opportunity the summer, and the coming year, gives us to teach a child, or someone (aren’t we all children at heart?) to sew or quilt, or craft. Summer is a time for experiencing what you can’t do during the rest of the year. Get to know someone you don’t know. Teach someone, spend time with someone. Yes, it takes effort. Yes, it is difficult, takes planning, and yes, it is sometimes awkward. But what you will gain and give is a new friend, a gift of talent for a child or a new skill for someone to write on his/her resume. Encourage a child or young adult to make a goal (like making a quilt) and stick to it. It may be you who benefits most from this experience! Speakers & Workshops

July 2018 (Community Center Auditorium, Camarillo)

Mike McNaman http://www.macquilts.com/index.html

July 10 ~ Talk “ Humor Meaning Metaphor”

“My lectures are of my quilts, my influences in quilt-making,

why and how I make my quilts. It is a trunk show and I bring

a raft of quilts for people to see, touch, inspect, and take a

nap under, if it comes to that. The lecture is about one hour

(longer if napping happens).”

“Quilt-making gives me that outlet to make poetic

statements. Sometimes it's simply a way to provoke a

question, such as: "Why is that pig in that quilt?" and the

response is: "I date my quilts by the year of the Asian animal

– made in the Year of the Pig." I may include

other literary elements: puns, metaphors, riddles, personal

history, rebuses, and plain ole jokes - do you know the joke

about the three-legged pig? Ask me.”

July 11 ~ Workshop - “I like to re-invent blocks or give them a

new setting, such as Double Wedding Ring, Sunbonnet Sue, Pickle Dish,

Drunkard's Path, Broken Dishes, Sunrays, to name a few. I don't care

as much about color as I do value - I like the idea of the eye flickering

as it goes across the plain of the quilt.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the left over books from

our quilt show boutique? Read on....

A box of general craft books, remaining from our quilt show, was recently donated to the

Oxnard Friends of the Library to help in their effort in pulling together an in-house library

for a local senior apartment complex. They had a special request for craft books and CQA

was able to fill their needs!

Both the Oxnard Friends of the Library and the Press Courier Senior Apartments extend

their sincerest THANKS. They were thrilled to receive the donation.

Janna Bailey with her viewer's choice winning quilt, For the Love of Penguins, from "Quilting by the Sea 2018"!

A Thank You Letter from a Quilt Show Attendee…………

“ I went to your Camarillo Guild quilt show this last Saturday and paid $5 for 6 raffle tickets. I put 2 tickets

into 3 different baskets from the choices on the table. I and my friends left the show for lunch out together before heading north to get home in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara.

A phone message was waiting for me when I arrived home. Lucky me, my ticket was drawn! I wasn't sure

which of the 3 baskets which I'd put tickets into was my win.

After picking up the basket, I waited until my weekly "Craft Day" with my friends, to open the basket with

them watching to share the excitement with me. It was so much fun, everything in it is nice and something I'll

use. We girls figured it is all worth about $200!

I've been happy for days knowing how lucky I was to have my one of my tickets drawn. Thank you

Camarillo guild for putting together such a special basket. Your show was wonderful, so much to see with

quality workmanship.”

Sincerely, Carol

“It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, Would you be mine?”

This is the theme of this year’s Block of the Month program. “Will you be my neighbor?” We

will be making “house” blocks through the year.

Each block will be in a 12”x12” finished square. The background fabric will be provided by

the guild. This is so that you can easily finish the quilt at the end of the program into your own

personal creation. We hope you will find your creative self in these patterns and use your

imagination to embellish them.

The patterns are designed for the beginner to the advanced quilter. So don’t be discouraged or

bored with the patterns. They change every month and will be different! You will be able to

access the patterns and print them from home when you go the CQA Website. (directions for

printing from home are available at the BOM table)

Murielle O’Brien and I will be happy to help you on your journey as you build your

neighborhood. Feel free to contact us.

“Please won’t you be our neighbor?”

Antique" Quilt for Sale

This 80" by 80" cotton quilt

was probably made between 1930 and 1950. It is hand

embroidered with beautiful

flowers and hand quilted with

white thread. The back is a

cream color muslin. There are several small rust stains on

the front. The seller would

like at least $150.
