Conference in Helena, Montana

June 6-8 we had a great turnout from Missoula. Bill Campbell put together a wonderful conference and a lot of great stories were shared. Penny shared a heartwarming story about Polio Plus and our goal is to raise $1000 per club for three years to match the 100 million dollar grant given by the Gates Foundation. David Kinsey was announced as the District Governor elect for 2010-2011 and will also be putting on the PETS training in 2010. Martha Ripley was the first presenter at the conference informing participants about the Youth Exchange Program. Mariah Leder gave a heartwarming speech about her trip to Thailand as an exchange student and truly motivated the crowd. There was a Friday night boat road through the Gates of Helena and all sorts of fun activities for participants. Fran also received the flying pig award from Billings as she lost the bet for increasing membership. Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Missoula for all it’s accomplishments for which Fran was able to share at the conference. We truly do some great projects each year. Congratulations also to the Missoula Sunrise club for building membership and Carl Prinzing for being awarded the Rotary International Meritorious Award. Carl truly loves being a Rotarian and has done some great things for our district. Our goal next year is to get more people to attend the District Conference in 2009 as it is truly a fun weekend and a great way to hear about Rotary around the state.

As we were touring the capital building we ran into Julian from Columbia who got to join our Rotary tour. He leaves for Columbia on June 21st. Julian got to meet and speak in Spanish with our Lt. Governor John Bolinger. It was a great day. Fellow Rotarian Tim Furey has experienced sitting in the legislative sessions and look at the Charlie Russell painting and appreciate the lovely artwork of the capital building.

International Peace Park

The Peace park this year is September 19-21st. Register online on the district website www.montanarotary.org and sign up now for housing as the prices are going up after June 19th. The Billings club is putting on the conference.

SWIM MISSOULA

The pool is finished and absolutely beautiful. On May 14th, the mayor, John Engen, dedicated the pool and several Rotarians attended the event. It was a cold and dreary day but it was great seeing the finished project and how our 19,000 dollar grant money was spent on the new starter blocks and lane lines. Thanks to all who made this project a success.

STUDENT YOUTH SERVICE AWARDS

Congratulations to JuUn An, Emily Garland, Emily Goodburn, Breana Johnson and Rebekah King for receiving scholarships from the Rotary club May 14th. Each student was nominated by a counselor and chosen by a committee. We truly had a hard time with so many qualified students who do great service in their community. Many thanks to Jean Jenkins, Jean Bowman, Lisa Rae Roper, Col. Sam Roberts and Cliff Larson for all their hard work in choosing and awarding these students.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

June 13-18th is the International Convention in Los Angeles. David Kinsey, Kevin Milko, Martha Ripley and Joe Vinso are among the few Missoulians heading down to the International Convention this week.

Youth Exchange

On Tuesday, June 10th, our first New Generations Exchange student, Akshay Bhandari from India arrives. Many thanks to Carl Prinzing for housing this student from June to September and Scott Johnson for being his counselor. Please make him feel welcome to the Rotary clubs in the area and if you can help with showing him your business or introducing him to some 19 year olds in Missoula, please contact Martha Ripley or Scott Johnson. Also, Carl is planning on taking a week vacation and needs someone to house his student for a week in August. If interested, please let Martha know if you would like to house the student for a week or two throughout his visit. Martha is going down two days early to go to the special Youth Exchange meetings in Los Angeles at the International Convention and learn more about the program. Many thanks to Dolores

Bandow for purchasing Martha’s airline ticket and the Rotary Club of Missoula for sponsoring her registration and room expenses.

We are sending 8 students this year to Germany, India, Brazil and Argentina this year. If you have airline miles you can donate to these students, please contact Martha at 329-1727 or email to [email protected]. Some of these trips cost over $2000 per student to go overseas and the rising cost of fuel has caused some students to cancel their travels.

PLAY BALL – OSPREY OUTING

There are signup sheets on the tables at lunch for the Osprey Game July 1st. This year we are doing the VIP banquet and sitting under the tent on the sidelines watching the game. The cost is $18.00 per person and it promised to be a great time for fellowship with all three clubs in Missoula. Contact Bill Schwanke for more information.
