Three mortar rounds hit BaghdadGreen Zone

BAGHDAD, 13 July— Three mortar rounds struck Baghdad’s Green Zone onTuesday afternoon and huge columns of black smoke were billowing from thescene, an Interior Ministry source said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties by the blasts in the zone,which houses some of the Iraqi government offices and the US embassy, anInterior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The barrage came a day after the new US defence Leon Panetta met withUS military commanders in Iraq and held talks with top Iraqi officials aboutwhether some US troops will remain in Iraq after the deadline of the end of2011.

The heavily fortified Green Zone has been frequently targeted by militants’mortar and rocket attacks. The roughly 10 square km zone is located on thewest bank of the Tigris River which bisects the Iraqi capital.

Cricket partners with Sprint for 3GModems

LONDON, 13 July—CricketWireless today announcednationwide 3G coverage for its USBmodem and hotspot products, mostlyusing the Sprint network.

The modem deal is part ofCricket’s nationwide roamingagreement with Sprint, which the twocompanies signed in August 2010.The agreement doesn’t make Cricketa national carrier. The company stillonly sells service in about a third ofthe country, and will cut people off ifthey use too much data outsideCricket’s home network.

Last year, Cricket said it wouldstart selling its phones nationwide inTarget, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy,using Sprint’s network whereCricket’s own network isn’t available.But that hasn’t happened yet.

Contact allergies associated with lowerrates of some cancers

HELLERUP, 13 July—The immunesystems of people with contactallergies may be primed to protectagainst certain types of cancer,including breast and brain cancers,new research suggests.

Contact allergies occur due todirect contact with chemicals andcommon metals such as nickel.

In the new study, researcherslooked at almost 17,000 Danish adultswho were tested for contact allergiesbetween 1984 and 2008. About one-

third (35 percent) tested positive for atleast one contact allergy. Women weremore likely than men to have a contactallergy — 41 percent versus 26percent.

When the study authors examinedcancer cases among the participantsover the long term, they found thatmen and women with contact allergieshad significantly lower rates of breastand non-melanoma skin cancer, andwomen with contact allergies also hadlower rates of brain cancer comparedto those without contact allergies.

But people with contact allergieshad higher rates of bladder cancer,which may be due to higher levels ofchemical metabolites accumulated inthe blood, the researchers suggested.

The study, by Kaare Engkilde ofthe National Allergy Research Centreat Copenhagen University, GentoffeHospital in Hellerup, Denmark, andcolleagues, is published in the 12 Julyonline edition of the journal BMJ Open.The findings did not allow theresearchers to come to any conclusionsabout cause and effect, and more studyis needed, they noted in a journalnews release.

The National Cancer Institute studylooked at a database of 36 differenttypes of cancer from 1977 to 2006.

It found the highest male-to-femalemortality rate ratios for cancers like lip,where 5.5 men died for each womanpatient, and esophageal, where 4 mendied for each woman patient.

For lung cancer, which is theleading cause of cancer deaths for bothmen and women, the research found2.3 male deaths for each female death.

The main reason for the differenceis that men are more at risk ofdeveloping cancer to begin with,

according to Michael Cook, aninvestigator in the division of cancerepidemiology and genetics at the NCIand the study’s lead investigator.

The average lifetime chance that aman will develop lung cancer is about1 in 13, compared to 1 in 16 for awoman, according to the AmericanCancer Society. American men are morelikely than women to have advanceddisease by the time their cancer isdiagnosed, Cook said.

Speaking on theoccasion, Patron ofMWVO Commander-in-Chief of Defence ServicesGeneral Min Aung Hlaingsaid that war veteransorganization had beenformed on self-reliancebasis since 1948, and itwas systematicallyreformed in 1973. Theconstitution of the

organization was approvedin 1975 and necessarilyamended in successiveeras.

The Myanmar WarVeterans OrganizationConferences were heldwith political essence in2001, 2005 and 2009.After the new governmentof the Republic of the

Union of Myanmar hastaken the responsibilitiesof the State, the PresidentOffice issuedannouncement No. 26/2011 on 20 April 2011 andreformed the CentralOrganizing Committee ofMWVO with seven tasks.The reformation of theorganization was aimed atensuring smooth andspeedy control processand broadening theeffective movements ofWVOs.

In looking back to thehistory of the nation, theTatmadaw joining handswith the people risked lifeand limb for regaining theindependence of theState. After the post-independence period, theTatmadaw safeguardedthe nation whenever itfaced the dangers ofbreaking up the Union.As the Tatmadawsteadfastly performs thenational politics, theMWVO which is thereserved force must bean bias without political

bias. The organizationcomprises the membersequipped with Esprit deCorps and the strongUnion Spirit, and it is anorganization bridging thepeople and theTatmadaw.

Myanmar is locatedin the strategic area,sharing border with largerand populous countries.Therefore, the security,peace and prosperity arethe most important for thecountry. So, Myanmar iscarrying out regionalsecurity and stability incooperation with regionalcountries and friendlycountries in accord withthe five principles ofpeaceful co-existence.

In line with theconstitution approved in2008, the multi-partydemocracy generalelection was held andthen, Hluttaws wereconvened with theattendance of electedHluttaw representativesthis year. Under theleadership of the

President elected by theHluttaws, the Uniongovernment and Unionlevel organizations, regionand state governmentsand self-administereddivision and zone leadingbodies were formed. On30 and 31 March, thePresident delivered anaddress on future policy,and the democratizationprocess is going on stepby step.

Upholding the OurThree Main NationalCauses, the Tatmadaw isjoining hands with thepeople in undertakingsecurity of the State,stability and developmentof the nation in accordwith 12 objectives. Thewar veterans are toparticipate in the activitiesunder the leadership ofthe Tatmadaw.

His Excellency Prime Minister Mr. ThongsingThammavong and party were accorded a warmwelcome by His Excellency U Thein Sein, Presidentof the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, reflectingthe close bonds of friendship existing between the twocountries and between the two peoples.

While in Myanmar, His Excellency PrimeMinister Mr. Thongsing Thammavong held bilateraltalks with His Excellency President U Thein Sein,called on His Excellency U Khin Aung Myint, Speakerof the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and His Excellency ThuraU Shwe Mann, Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw, HisExcellency Prime Minister Mr. ThongsingThammavong also visited sites of cultural and economicinterest in Nay Pyi Taw. Prime Minister Mr. Thongsing Thammavongcongratulated President U Thein Sein on the recentdevelopments and socio-economic achievementsrecorded by the people of Myanmar.

Both sides also complimented the work ofbilateral mechanisms such as exchange of visits, politicalconsultation meetings, Joint Commission meetings andRegional/Provincial Border Committee meetingsorganized by relevant Ministries of both countries asmost viable avenues of goodwill and cooperation.

The Myanmar side expressed its deepappreciation to the Lao People’s Democratic Republicfor the latter’s consistent support in times of need at theUnited Nations and other regional and internationalfora.

The Lao PDR side expressed its continuedsupport to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar inhosting the 4th GMS Summit in 2011, the 27th SEAGames in 2013 and the 24th and 25th ASEAN Summitsin 2014. Meanwhile, the Myanmar side also expressedits full endorsement to the Lao People’s DemocraticRepublic in hosting the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting(ASEM) in November 2012 and His ExcellencyPresident U Thein Sein expressed his intension toattend the said meeting.

Both sides also welcomed the frequentexchange of visits between the two Armed Forces, andencouraged to continue such exchanges to furtherconsolidate understanding and warmer friendship amongthe Armed Forces personnel of the two countries.

Both sides exchanged views on the possibilityof constructing a friendship bridge across the MekongRiver with a view to facilitating and enhancing roadconnectivity between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to further enhancing thebilateral cooperation between the Ministry of HomeAffairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and

the Ministry of Public Security of the Lao PDR onmatters relating to suppression of transnational crimes,drug trafficking, arms smuggling and terroristactivities.

Both sides reaffirmed their policy to respectand safeguard each other’s sovereignty and securityby not allowing any armed insurgent groups fromeither side to keep their base in the territory of theirrespective countries.

Both sides expressed their satisfaction on thesuccess of the First Meeting of the Regional/ProvincialBorder Committee held at Houaysay District, BokeoProvince in 2010 and agreed to convene a SecondMeeting of the said-Border Committee at Myanmarside on a mutually convenient date. The exact dateand venue of the meeting will be communicatedthrough the diplomatic channel.

With a view to promoting security in theMekong River, both sides agreed to renew theircommitment to enhance cooperation on safeguardingthe navigation in the Mekong River.

In this regard, both sides agreed to preventundesirable incidents from taking place in the futurealong the Mekong River through timely and effectiveexchange of information between the security forcesof both countries.

Both sides agreed to carry out a joint boundaryinspection and maintenance of Boundary ReferenceMarkers along the Myanma-Lao boundary on amutually convenient date in accordance with theprovisions stated in the Myanmar-Lao boundaryAgreement.

His Excellency Prime Minister Mr . ThongsingThammavong expressed his profound appreciation tothe Government and the people of the Republic of theUnion of Myanmar for generous hospitality extendedto him and his party during their stay in the Republicof the Union of Myanmar.

In the time of the Tatmadaw government, concertedefforts were made for reducing poverty rate from 32per cent to 26 per cent by laying down five ruraldevelopment tasks. The government is striving toreach 16 per cent poverty rate in 2014-2015. Therefore,the MWVO members are to actively participate in alltasks in cooperation with the people in their respectiveregions.

The Constitution (2008) comprises the Chapter (7)Tatmadaw Sector from Sections 337 to 344. Section344 stipulates that a law shall be enacted to provideassistance and care for disabled Defence Servicespersonnel and the families of deceased or fallen

Commander-in-Chief…Defence Services personnel. The section unveils thebenevolence of the State for the Tatmadawmen andtheir families. At the ceremony to take heed ofpresidential address and make affirmation on 31 March2011, the President kept a promise that salary andpension of the State service personnel will be promotedat the opportune time. On 30 June, the announcementwas issued on promotion of pension salary of the Stateservice personnel.

As MWVO members are former State personnel.Wives, sons and daughters of death/posthumous warveterans are reserved members of the organization.Therefore, they will enjoy the increased pension salary.

In conclusion, he urged those present tocontinuously maintain the strengths and transform thequantity to quality, to participate in strengthening peaceand stability and development of sound foundations, toserve the interests of the State and the citizens underthe leadership of the Tatmadaw and to implementseven tasks in cooperation with the people under theleadership of the Tatmadaw.

Chairman of the MWVO COC Adjutant-GeneralMaj-Gen Khin Zaw Oo presented cash assistance to1084 war veterans of above 75 years old, 470 disabledwar veterans and 43 students from military academiesof war veterans, other university students andoutstanding students in 2011 matriculation examination.

15 killed after truck hit house inIndonesia

JAKARTA, 13 July— Fifteen people were killedand scores of others wounded after a truck hit ahouse where villagers were celebrating a religiousactivity around midnight Tuesday in East Java, amilitary officer told Xinhua by phone.

The truck got a problem of un-functioned brakeand hit the house in Bojonegoro District, militaryofficer of Military Command in Ngawi Jamin PNtold Xinhua.

“Fifteen died on the site and many others gotwounded,” he said. Before hitting the house, thetruck collided with a small truck, said Jamin.

Mexico’s federal police capture20 drug gang suspects

MEXICO CITY, 13 July— Mexican federal police captured 20suspected members of the drug gang Knights Templar after thegroup sparked a wave of violence in the western part of thecountry, the public security ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the police arrested thealleged gang members as they were driving in a convoy to ameeting in the municipality of Apatzingan, 500 km west ofMexico City.

The Knights Templar stole and torched vehicles across thewestern state of Michoacan last week in retaliation to crackdownby federal police.

The ministry sent an additional 1,800 federal police officersto Michoacan on Friday to quell the violence and capture theKnights Templar leader Servando Gomez, also known as “LaTuta,” who still remains at large.

The Knights Templar is a newly-founded drug gang whichwas originially part of the powerful cartel La Familia, whoseleader Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas was arrested by federalpolice last month.

LONDON, 13 July—Some snailssurvive after being eaten by birds,Japanese researchers have found.

Researchers found that 15 percentof the snails eaten by Japanese white-eye or mejiro birds survived digestionand were found alive in the birds’droppings.

This evidence suggests that birdpredation could be a key factor inhow snail populations spread, reportsthe BBC.

While it has long been known thatbirds that eat fruit can spread a plant’sseeds through their droppings, thestudy points to some invertebratesbeing spread the same way.

29 trains on China’s newly built high-speed railwaylinking Beijing and Shanghai, shortly after a similarincident halted 11 of the railway’s trains two daysago, sources with the Shanghai Railway Bur-eauconfirmed Tuesday.

Work continues to cleanup oil spill in US river

LOS ANGELES, 13 July—Work continued onTuesday to clean up an oil spill in the YellowstoneRiver in the US state of Montana, but only one tofive percent of the oil is expected to be recoveredbecause much of the oil was swept away by theriver, authorities said .

On 1 July, a break occurred in a 12-inchpipeline owned by Texas-based ExxonMobilcompany which resulted in release of crude oil intothe Yellowstone River approximately 20 miles (36kilometres) upstream of Billings, Montana.

The US Environmental Protection Agencyreported an estimated 1,000 barrels of oil enteredthe river, which was in flood stage, before thepipeline was cut off. To assist the cleanup effort,California Governor Gerry Brown said his state hasdispatched a team of experts to Montana.

During the past (24) hours weather has been partly cloudy in Kayah State, rain or thundershowers have been isolated in Lower Sagaing and Mandalay Regions, Kayin State, scattered in Magway Region, Shan and Rakhine States, fairly widespread in Bago and Ayeyawady Regions, Mon State and widespread in the remaining Regions and States. The noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were Bago (2.83) inches, Machanbaw (2.76) inches, Kawthoung (2.63) inches, Katha (1.89) inches, Putao (1.77) inches and Tamu (1.69) inches.

Bay Inference Monsoon is strong in the Andaman Sea and moderate elsewhere in the Bay of Bengal.

State of the Sea Squalls with moderate to rough seas are likely at times off and along Gulf of Mottama and Mon-Taninthayi Coasts. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach (35 to 40) mph. Seas will be moderate elsewhere in Myanmar waters.

Witsel leaves StandardLiege to join Benfica

LONDON, 13 July—Belgianinternational midfielder Axel Witsel hasleft Standard Liege to join Benfica, theBelgian club announced on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old, who has scoredfive times in 19 international appearances,has signed a five-year deal with theLisbon club.

Financial details of the move havenot been released, although media reportssuggest that Benfica paid a transfer fee ofbetween 7 million and 8 million euros($9.9m and $11.3m).
