PERSPECTIVESMonday, 20 February, 2012

A simple and perfect exerciseNormally, jogging is running slowly which

is beneficial especially to older people as runningfor long hours may hurt their joints. Jogging, infact, is an exercise whose benefits are far morethan the financial cost.

Another advantage for senior citizens isthat jogging needs lesser efforts when comparedwith running. It is really simple and most suitablefor many especially the deskbound people.

Regular jogging can make the heart stronger, control body weight, build stamina, decreasestress, and decelerate aging. Although it usesenergy and needs efforts, jogging can make peoplefeel physically vigilant and can keep their spiritup in their daily work.

As muscles are using more oxygen whilerunning slowly and steadily, jogging improvesstrength or endurance. Better endurance isattained when the lungs are able to take in moreoxygen for the blood to pump.

Apart from keeping mental problemsincluding anxiety, depression and stress at bay, jogging can also prevent dreadful syndromes as

diabetes, hypertension and heart attack andalso obesity which actually is their source.

A comprehensive knowledge of jogging isthat it has the power of significantly reducingstress and clearing worries. As jogging orrunning relieves stress which is one of the causesof cancers, some research report even say thatit can prevent cancer risks mainly breast cancer.Other cancer risks like lung cancer, ovariancancer and prostate cancer can also be reducedthrough jogging.

So, nothing in this world will be morebeneficial for us than refreshing ourselves witha revitalizing jogging in the morning or evening.

Woman dies after contracting Legionnaires’ diseasefrom dentist’s office

ROME , 19 Feb — An 82-year-old Italian woman died aftershe contracted Legionnaires’ disease, a severe, pneumonia-like illness, from the water in her dentist’s office, according toa case report published in the journal The Lancet. Scientists

who determined the source of the woman’s illness, whichoccurred in February 2011, said during the disease’s incubationperiod the woman only left her home twice to visit her dentist. When they tested the water in both places, they discovered thebacteria that causes Legionnaires’ in the dentist’s water line.

Water lines carry water from the main water supply tocertain devices used during patient care. While the authorswrote the most common sources of infection are airconditioning systems, hot water systems, spas and fountains,a recent study found dental water lines to be another majorsource of contamination with Legionella bacteria. Legionellapneumophila is the bacterial strain that causes Legionnaires’disease. “However, as far as we are aware, no case ofLegionnaires’ disease has been associated with this sourceof infection,” added the authors, led by Maria Luisa Ricci ofthe Italian National Health Service. While it was not clear whatkind of water line standards were in place in Italy, in the US,the American Dental Association (ADA) said infection controlstandards are very stringent in order to prevent cases like theone in Italy from happening. —Internet

LONDON , 19 Feb — Researchers have sequenced thegenome of the killer disease that is driving the remainingwild populations of Tasmanian devils towards extinction. They hope the genetic data will offer clues on how tosuppress the spread of Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD),which is transmitted via biting. Since DFTD was firstrecorded in 1996, populations in some areas are estimatedto have declined by up to 90%. Details of the research havebeen published in the journal Cell.

DFTD refers to a fatal condition that is characterisedby the appearance of facial tumours. As these develop intolarge cancerous growths, the animal finds it hard to eat. Asit becomes weaker, it is unable to compete with otheranimals for food. Researchers say that affected animalsappear to die within three to five months of the lesions firstappearing.—Internet

Microsoft rolls out a dramaticallydifferent logo for Windows 8

NEW YORK, 19 Feb —Announced on Microsoft’sThe Windows Blog earliertoday, the software companyhas officially announced theredesigned logo for Windows8 after it was leaked on aChinese site on Monday. While the colour scheme isdifferent than the leakedversion, the design isdefinitely the same. Designedto emulate the Metro style ofWindows 8, the monochro-matic logo is much simplerthan the Windows 7 logowhich was previously

mistaken for a flag accordingto the blog.

As explained by SamuelMoreau, the User ExperienceDirector at Microsoft, hestates “We wanted the newlogo to be both modern andclassic by echoing theInternational TypographicStyle (or Swiss design) thathas been a great influence onour Metro style designphilosophy. Using bold flatcolours and clean lines andshapes, the new logo has thecharacteristics of way-finding design systems seen

in airports and subways.”Moreau continues “It wasimportant that the new logocarries our Metro principle ofbeing “AuthenticallyDigital”. By that, we mean itdoes not try to emulate faux-industrial designcharacteristics such as

materiality (glass, wood, plastic, etc.). It has motion– aligning with the fast andfluid style you’ll findthroughout Windows 8.Our final goal was for thenew logo to be humble, yetconfident. Welcoming youin with a slight tilt inperspective and when youchange your colour, thelogo changes to reflect you.It is a “Personal” Computerafter all.”

The logo most closelyresembles the Windows 1.0logo released inconjunction with the firstversion of the operatingsystem during 1985.

Spurs forced into replay asStoke go through

LONDON, 19 Feb— This season’s FA Cup favouritesTottenham Hotspur were held to a 0-0 draw at third tierStevenage on Sunday while last term’s runners-up StokeCity reached the quarter-finals after prevailing 2-0 inanother tricky-looking game at Crawley Town.

Spurs, third in the Premier League and with coachHarry Redknapp tipped to take over England, produced alethargic display with a new five-man defence and had tosettle for a replay at White Hart Lane next month.

Louis Saha had the ball in the net but his shot clippedan offside Scott Parker on the line to sum up a bad day forSpurs, the best-ranked team left in the Cup after holdersManchester City lost in an earlier round like ManchesterUnited.

London’s three big clubs have all struggled in the fifthround with beleaguered Arsenal being eliminated bySunderland and Chelsea scraping a 1-1 home draw withsecond tier Birmingham City on Saturday.

Stoke had a man harshly sent off but then scored acontroversial penalty as they saw off fourth divisionCrawley.

Jonathan Walters converted the 42nd-minute spotkick, after Ryan Shawcross had gone to ground having barelybeen touched by Kyle McFadzean, before Peter Crouchheaded a second after halftime to end a personal goaldrought.

PENNSYLVANIAM, 19Feb— “That’s not fair!” It’sa common playgroundcomplaint. But how early dochildren acquire this senseof fairness? Before they’re 2,says a new study. “We foundthat 19- and 21-month-oldinfants have a generalexpectation of fairness, andthey can apply itappropriately to differentsituations,” says Universityof Illinois psychologygraduate student StephanieSloane, who conducted the

study with UI’s RenéeBaillargeon and DavidPremack of the Universityof Pennsylvania.

The findings appear inPsychological Science, ajournal published by theAssociation forPsychological Science.

In each of twoexperiments, babieswatched live scenariosunfold. In the first, 19-month-olds saw two giraffepuppets dance around at theback of a stage. An

experimenter arrived withtwo toys on a tray and said,“I have toys!” “Yay!” saidthe giraffes. Then theexperimenter gave one toyto each giraffe or both to oneof them. The infants weretimed gazing at the sceneuntil they lost interest.Longer looking timesindicated that somethingwas odd — unexpected — tothe baby. In this experiment,three-quarters of the infantslooked longer when onegiraffe got both toys.

In the secondexperiment, two womenfaced each other with a pileof small toys between themand an empty plastic box infront of each of them. Anexperimenter said, “Wow!Look at all these toys. It’stime to clean them up.” Inone scenario, one womandutifully put the toys away, while the other kept playing— but the experimenter gavea reward to both the workerand the slacker.—Internet
