created in 4928 by ded'ICated art'IStS Of Staturefor the protection of artistsl interestsl and Traditional Realism in American Art'
THE AMERICAN ARTISTSPROFESSIONAL LEAGUE
F. Bc]llc]rd Willic]ms, Assistant Trec]surer of
the Ncltionol Academy clnd former President of
the Solmogundi Club, both of which C]relocated in New York City, noted cl need for ancltioncll organizcltion to fill the rapid devel-
opment of off interest in other large cities anddistclnt clrecls such os California.
In Jc]nuory 1928, he called c] meeting Of
fifteen members of the Salmclgundi Club to
discuss forming ``The American Artists Profes-
sioncll League.'' The majority ottending were
acodemiciclnS Such CIS Frclnk deHcIVen, Hobarf
Nichols and Bruce Crclne. ''The AmericanAnists Professionc]l Lec]gue'' became a realityot thclt meeting with F. Ballclrd Willioms its
first President, Wilford Conrow Secretary andCordon Grant its TrecISurer.
The f'lrst problems to be consideredwere the 'lnferior mc]nufc]cture of c]rfisrs paint
clnd obtclining commissions of officicll porfroitsfor American Anists. Too mclny European
pc]inters were coming to Washington, D.C.,clnd receiving commissions for official porfrclitswhile American Artists were neglected. AIberfT. Reid knew his way around Washington,D.C. clnd persuaded a California Senator toonclch a rider to cl Congressional Bill. This
rider specified thc]t all officic]I porfroits, paid
for with tclxpclyers' money, were to be paintedby Americcln Anists. ''The Americcln Artists
Professional League," now referred to os theAAPL, achieved its f'lrst success, and tO this
day our governments officicII porfrclits inWashington, D.C., clre PClinted by American
Anists.
Wilford Conrowls specicllty wcls the Chem-ical and physiccII purity of pigmentS. Through
his effons, a fund of $3500 was obtained
from the Carnegie Corporation EndowmentFund for a progrclm of color pigment research-Dr. Martin Fischer undertook the investigcltion
ot the University of Cincinnc]ti. It wc]s com-
pleted in 1932, making the AAPL thecountry's authority on clrfist's pigments. TheAAPL wc]s also instrumental in securing the
U.S. Bureau of Stondords' origincll set of
government-sponsored stc]ndords for orfisrscolors. These standards were updc]ted inl 962. All mc]jor mc]nufc]cturers of c]rf'lsrs pc]int
followed AAPL standards, and to this dc]y eachtube of paint states: ''Statement of contents c]srecommended by The American Artists Pro-fessionaI League.'' The AAPL was not-and isnot-compensclted in any way for theserecommendations: lt was and is done os aservice to clll orfists.
In 193O the AAPL founded ''Americcln Art
Week," and sponsored its observancenationc]lly during the first week of Novembereach yeclr. President Eisenhower applaudedour efforts with a telegram to our office inl959. Rising costs and diminishing funds
---.mclde it necessary tO discontinue this PrOgrC]mI.... in the early ,70s.
During the yeclrs between l930 clndl95l, the AAPL published a bi-weeklycolumn, in ART DIGEST mogozine, devoted tosolving problems for orfists, giving neus ofmembers and such editorial comments andcriticism as the AAPL wished to discuss. StoreChapters were organized during this periodclnd even included CI ChCIPter in Paris, Frclnce.
The deccldes of 195O, l960 and pc]rf ofthe '70s sow on c]rf world with drasticchanges. Public clnd government tcISteS Werein an era during which extremes, fads, shocks
and abstrclctions were getting the lion's shareof government sponsorship' grants of publicmoney and media promotion. AAPL rc]isedobjections to I.hese practices to the highestlevels of government at the White House, before Senate Committees, through lectures, radio broadcasts, rv appearances and in
publications.Eminent Artists who hove served the AAPL
in the past as Officers clnd Board Members
include Dean Cornwell, LioneI Barrymore,
Roger Deering' Horvey Dunn and Frederic
\^thitaker. To these and the many unnamed,we the present AAPL members give oursalutc]tions and our thc]nks.
The AAPL Grc]nd Nc]tionc]I Exhibitions hove
always been for members only' clnd we werealwc]ys forfunclte tO acquire exhibition Space
gratis. Things began to change in l980 to apoint where we spent most of our timescouring New York City for exhibition space.ln l981, offer severc]l yec]rs of negoticltiOnS,
we had cl beautiful Grand National Exhibition
at the exhibition gallery of the Equitable LifeAssurance Society. The following year theywere unable to include the AAPL into theirexhibit schedule, and nothing else WCIS
avclilable. After a review of the very few
galleries large enough for our Grc]nd NotioncllExhibitions, all of which had high rental fees,we selected the Salmagundi Club, a beautifulLondmork Building on lower Fifth Avenue in
New York City.
