President’s Message

Warmer weather is here and our Spring and Summer shooting events are

just around the corner. A good deal of preparation is going into making sure

that this seasons trap and skeet events go off without a hitch. We hope that

more of our members will take part in these events this year. Watch the web

site for dates and come on out and shoot.

The front deck was removed a couple of weeks ago to make way for a new,

larger deck. I want to personally thank all those that came out to help re-

move the old deck. They had it down and loaded on trailers in no time flat.

Great job everyone! The next step is building the new deck. If you can lend a

hand, please do so.

As some of you know, a group of our members get together every two weeks

or so on Friday evening at the club for a meal. Wayne Rhodes, Ricky West

and the crew prepare some great food. Turnout is growing, now at 30 – 40

each time. There is a sign-up sheet at the counter that will tell you all about

the next feed. The food is outstanding every time and the price is very mod-

est. This is a family friendly event that generally starts at around 5:00pm.

The menu varies for each event. Low country boil, prime rib, barbeque

chicken, and the list goes on. Sign up and bring the family for a good time

and the best food around.

Old Hickory is a family friendly club run by volunteers. Without the hard

work and dedication of our members, Old Hickory would not exist. That

would be a shame, since the club provides so much in the way of a safe and

fun place to enjoy the shooting sports. A sport we all enjoy very much. As

with most any organization, even though the membership is relatively large,

only about 10% of the members take an active role in the club. That puts a

serious burden on those 10% that are truly interested in making the club suc-

ceed. My guess is that there are many members in our club that want to get

more involved, but maybe aren’t sure how or what they can do. If you are

one of those members, I would encourage you to speak with me or one of our

board members. There are a number of tasks that we could use some help

with, most would take very little of your time, and it would be much appreci-

ated.

I look forward to seeing you at Old Hickory

Sincerely,

Jim Thompson

New Board Members

Jim Martin Ricky West

Don Wise was made a life time hon-

orary member at the January 2016

Board meeting. Don has been an ac-

tive shooter at Old Hickory for a

number of years and was a frequent

sight working behind the counter on

Wednesdays and Fridays. As it al-

ways does, time marches on, and Don

has curtailed his shooting activities.

He and his wife Jean will soon be

moving closer to their grandchildren

in Richmond VA. We will miss you

Don, and extend our best wishes to

you and your family.

Jim Thomson, OHGC President, congratulates Don Wise on

BOARD NEWS

Friday Afternoon Cookouts

Last year a group of OHGC members led by Rickey West and Wayne Rhodes began having cookouts on Fri-

day afternoons after the shooting is over. These meals have morphed into regular event s just about every

other week . They range from specialties like Low Country Seafood Boils to Prime Rib. There is generally a

sign-up sheet in the club house and the price of the meal is based on the number of members and guest at-

tending - always more than reasonable. Come on out for a late afternoon of shooting and stay for a home

style dinner with family and friends. Be sure to call the club to check on times and dates and to let them

know you are coming—they need to know ahead of time to have enough food on hand.

CHILLY CHILI FUN SHOOT

FEBRUARY 13, 2016

It was an unusually cold February Day on Saturday the 13th but the weather din not deter a hardy bunch of Old

Hickory members from attending the first Family Fun Shoot of the year. The event lived up to its name—it was

definitely chilly outside and with ten entries in the cook-off there was plenty of chili to go around inside. Congrat-

ulations to Mimi McCoy for winning the Chili contest. (Her recipe is on the back page. ) For those willing to ven-

ture out onto the ranges there was some fun shooting: Wobble Trap, Scrap—a combination of Trap and Skeet at

the same time, Side by Side Doubles and .22 caliber sharp shooting at new metal targets on the rifle range. There

was a “ton” of door prizes, a 50/50 raffle to benefit the youth shooters, a cake raffle, guess the number of shells

contest and a swap meet. Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and to all those who helped make the day a

success. Special thanks to Al Bost and John Miller for the Trap fields, Al Davis and Ronnie Barnes for Scrap, Bob

Curl, Charles McCoy, Allan Moore, and Ralph Zampella for the Rifle Range and Rickey West, Wayne Rhodes in

the Kitchen and Karole Miller and George DeSanto for their donations.

Keep an eye on the web site and your e-mail for more family fun shoots at OHGC later this year!!

Work Day March 12—New Deck in The Making

Old Hickory’s deck has been in dire need of repair for some time. On Saturday March 12, club members arrived

for a workday and began demolition of the old deck. They had it completely removed in short order and then pre-

pared the site for the new deck.

Thanks to the following members who showed up on the 12th to help: John Miller, Karole Miller, Jon Silberhorn,

Johnnie Hollingsworth, George DeSanto, Jim Martin, Phil McCumbee, Bob Berry, Al Bost, Robert Curl, Butch

Hassell, Nancy Roberts, Charles McCoy, Ron Allen, Ron Langley, Ricky West, John Anderson, John Parker, Wayne

Rhodes, Milton Daughtridge, Jim Thompson, Al Davis, Steve Joyner, David Wittman, and Charles Miller.

Building the new deck will take several weeks since it

will be erected by club members in their spare time.

The deck will be extended several feet toward the

Skeet Ranges . The portion of the deck on the north

side will not be replaced. Pictured at left are Al Da-

vis, Wayne Rhodes, Al Bost, Rusty Daugthridge and

Ron Allen after a good days work on the deck. Spe-

cial thanks to Wayne and Rusty who have overseen

the deck project. If you would like to help out with

the remaining work contact Wayne Rhodes at wil-

[email protected].

TRAP SHOOT

March 6, 2016 Brandon Matthews HOA

The Day started out over cast with the sun cutting through by 11:30 AM. We had a nice turnout. A flat of shells

was donated by the club to raffle off along with a 50/50 raffle; proceeds from both going to the youth program.

We also had three new members join the ATA, Caitlyn Beamon, Benj Goodwin and Joseph Childress. We hope

they had a good time and will join us for future shoots. We had a great hot lunch thanks to Wayne Rhodes and

Ricky West—hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fix’ns.

The Shoot ran smoothly thanks to all the club help both inside and on the grounds - Al, John, Rusty, Matt and

Milton. A special “Thank You” to score keeper Judy Mabe, you made my Job on the computer a lot easier.

Chili

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 medium sweet onions, medium diced

6 medium garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 pound lean ground beef

Salt and pepper to taste

1 large red bell pepper, medium diced

Chili powder to taste (start 1 & 1/2 tbs.)

1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes

1 & 1/2 cups Prego Sauce (with onions & garlic)

2 (15 ounce) cans light red kidney beans -drained

and rinsed

2 cups chicken broth

2 coarsely chopped jalapeño peppers

Instructions

1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat until

shimmering. Add the onions and sauté for approxi-

mately 4 minutes, then add the garlic and the jala-

peños and sauté for 2 more minutes, don’t let the

garlic burn.

2. Add the ground beef, the chili and some salt and

pepper and cook, breaking the meat into small piec-

es with a wooden spoon, until the beef is no longer

pink, about 7 minutes.

3. Add the bell pepper and cook for another minute

4. Add the diced tomatoes and their juices, tomato

sauce, chicken broth and beans and stir to combine.

5. You can either cook it in the same pot on medium

high for 30 more minutes after it boils or until the

chili thickens or you can transfer it to a slow cooker

and cook it for approx. 4 hours on high or 6 hrs. on

low. Keep stirring it from time to time.

6. When it starts to thicken taste it and add more salt,

pepper and chili powder if needed.
