Fall 2019 Volume 60, Issue 3 The Helping Hands -a quarterly official publication of the Ohio State Socie- ty of Medical Assistants PRESIDENTS MESSAGE: This has been such a whirlwind of a year so far! Our local chapters have been offering great CEU opportunities and its been wonderful to see so many of you attending. As we gear up for the second half of the business year, lets take some time to reflect on our accomplishments this year. Our summer board meeting and leadership seminar were well attended and offered our members education on how our or- ganization advocates for medical assistants. We also learned how to become more involved to advance our profession and the OSSMA. The fall education seminar and board meeting were also popular events. Great CEU sessions were offered by our members in the Tri- County Chapter. We greatly appreci- ate their time and effort that went into making that event a success. I want to thank all of our members who volunteer in making the OSSMA the great organization that is. Id also like to challenge you with a task. Consider contacting a medi- cal assistant that isnt currently active with us and invite them to attend a local chapter meeting with you. Perhaps share a cup of coffee after the meeting and chat about how the organization has benefitted you. You never know the impact that can have in increasing our numbers and par- ticipation. In closing, I wish you a happy, safe and warm winter! And as always, Im just a phone call/email away if you need anything. Judy

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

This has been such a whirlwind of a year so far! Our local chapters have been offering great CEU opportunities and it’s been wonderful to see so many of you attending. As we gear up for the second half of the business year, let’s take some time to reflect on our accomplishments this year. Our summer board meeting and leadership seminar were well attended and offered our members education on how our or-ganization advocates for medical assistants. We also learned how to become more involved to advance our profession and the OSSMA. The fall education seminar and board meeting were also popular events. Great CEU sessions were offered by our members in the Tri-County Chapter. We greatly appreci-ate their time and effort that went into making that event a success. I want to thank all of our members who volunteer in making the OSSMA the great organization that is. I’d also like to challenge you with a task. Consider contacting a medi-cal assistant that isn’t currently active with us and invite them to attend a local chapter meeting with you. Perhaps share a cup of coffee after the meeting and chat about how the organization has benefitted you. You never know the impact that can have in increasing our numbers and par-ticipation. “PEOPLE WHO ARE CRAZY ENOUGH TO THINK THEY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, ARE THE ONES WHO DO.” – ROB SILTANEN

CHICAGO (April 2018)—The CMA (AAMA) has always set the bar for excel-lence. Now, to better ensure current com-petence and knowledge, and thus better protect patients, the Certifying Board of the AAMA has made the following change in policy regarding the time limit for recer-tifying the CMA (AAMA) credential by continuing education:

Recertification by Continuing Edu-cation Time Limit. Effective January 1, 2020, an individual whose credential has been expired for more than 90 days forfeits the right to reactivate the creden-tial by continuing education and must sit for the CMA (AAMA) Certification/Recertification Examination.

Candidates are allowed three attempts to sit for and pass the exam. If the candidate does not pass on the third attempt, the candidate is no longer eligible for the ex-am or to recertify the CMA (AAMA) cre-dential. Payment of a $50 reactivation fee plus the current exam fee is required.

The Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA)—or CMA (AAMA)—credential represents a medical assistant who has been creden-tialed through the Certifying Board (CB) of the American Association of Medical As-sistants (AAMA)—the only medical assist-ing certifying body that has earned accred-itation under ISO International Standard 17024, representing powerful evidence of quality, efficiency, and safety.

Certification status is a matter of public record and may be released. Every day the AAMA responds to more than 100 em-ployer requests for CMA (AAMA) certifica-tion verification—for both current and potential employees.

Medical assisting is one of the nation’s careers growing much faster than average for all occupations, according to the Unit-ed States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Medical assistants work predominantly in outpatient health care settings. Employers are seeking and recruiting these allied health professionals because of their uniquely diverse clinical and administra-tive patient-centered training.

The mission of the American Association of Medical Assistants is to provide the medical assistant professional with educa-tion, certification, credential acknowledg-ment, networking opportunities, scope-of-practice protection, and advocacy for qual-ity patient-centered health care.

For more information, visit www.aama-ntl.org or call the AAMA directly at 800/228-2262.

The Mary Buckley Scholarship Fund was established in 1959 in memory of the second president of the OSSMA, Mary Buckley of Toledo, who tragically died in a fire in her home 2 weeks before the end of her term as president. The first scholarship was awarded in 1972 making 2020 scholarships the 48th year of awards. Since 1972, the Ohio State Society of Medical Assistants has sponsored annual scholarships for Medical Assisting Students who are enrolled in AAMA-CAAHEP accredited medical assisting programs through its Mary Buckley Scholarship Fund. We will be awarding at least four (4) $1000.00 scholarships at the President's Luncheon at the annual meeting in April 2020. We will accept applications between December 16, 2019 through February 25, 2020. A student may apply in their second semester of the Medical Assisting program. Selection criteria are based on:

Desire to enter the allied health care profession

Financial need

GPA 2.5 or higher No application will be accepted without transcripts and 2 (two) letters of recommendations. In 2019, twenty-two applications were received for the scholarships. After much deliberation the following applicants received the 2019 Mary Buckley Scholarships: Makayla M. Gantz - Ashland County West Holmes Career Center
