2013 Accomplishments 2013 ProgramsBBB Military Line®

As a partner in the Department of Defense (DOD) Financial Readiness Campaign, BBB MilitaryLine brings free BBB services to military members and their families and in all five branches of the military and the National Guard. With eight military installations, a total population of over 95,000 service personnel and more than 350,000 military family members in Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin, this BBB’s service area has the largest concentration of military installations in the nation. BBB Military Line reaches out to personnel at Fort Hood, Lackland AirForce Base, Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi and other facilities. In 2013, BBB offered 156 classes to 5,783 military personnel and families throughout its service area designed to improve financial literacy and protect service members from scams.

BBB Senior SavvyIn 2013, BBB Education Foundation delivered classes to educate seniors and caregivers to safeguard their assets and maintain their financial freedom. BBB Senior Savvy provides materials through Meals On Wheels and media messaging to reach active and homebound seniors. Thousands of seniors received BBB materials on identity theft, scam prevention and how to hire contractors. A total of 7,227 seniors and caregivers attended Senior Savvy classes throughout the year. BBB Senior Savvy partners with the Area Agency on Aging of the Golden Crescentand Coastal Bend, Alamo Area Agency on Aging, Bexar County Area Agency on Aging, as well as Bexar County Adult Protective Services, Senior Community Services and Senior Companions.

BBB Shred DayBBB Education Foundation hosted nine BBB Shred Day events in 2013 to help consumers keep their identities secure by destroying confidential information. The events invited consumers and small businesses to bring sensitive documents to be shredded on-site, free of charge. Events were held in Austin, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Killeen and Waco. BBB Education Foundation shred 51 tons of personal documents for the community. BBB Shred Day offers recycling of cell phonesand computer parts as well.

BBB Teen TrustBBB Teen Trust is a program that educates teens and young adults about financial literacy. Thetopics include credit cards, savings, budgeting and money management, the stock market,401k plans, financial aid and health insurance. BBB Teen Trust provides a forum for teens to askquestions and obtain tools to prepare them for adult life. The program equips young adults withthe tools necessary to protect themselves from a variety of scams, including scams within the jobmarketplace, predatory lending and identity theft. In 2013, BBB Teen Trust reached 400 students.

Laws of LifeBBB partners with the John Templeton Foundation for the Laws of Life Regional Essay Contest, which recognizes the achievements of exceptional youths who participate in local contests and encourage schools and communities in San Antonio to conduct this enriching and valuable program. Laws of Life contests are held in at least 35 countries and 31 states. Tens of thousands of students submit essays to the contest each year. This contest can also help students prepare for the written portion of the SAT or ACT exams, as well as college application essays. In 2013, there were 590 essays submitted with 13 finalists being recognized at the banquet held in San Antonio, TX.

• Directly educated a total of 17,317 people

• Empowered 7,227 seniors and caregivers to protect their identities and financial freedom

• Served 2,084 consumers at five BBB Shred Day events and shred 51 tons of personal documents for the community, free of charge

• Educated 5,783 military personnel and family members through BBB Military Line

• Awarded a $5,000 grant from BBB Military Line/Defense Credit Union Council ArmedForces Disciplinary Control Board Pilot Program. This program will focus on thebackground and purpose of the AFDCB’s within the military, and how BBB’s can helpfoster a better understanding of the needs of military consumers and their families

• Served as advisor to Disciplinary Control Board at Fort Hood, Naval Air Station CorpusChristi and Lackland Air Force Base

• Served on the Texas Statewide Elder Exploitation Task Force
