2017 ANNUAL REPORT

A Message from the Executive DirectorEveryone has a story. Each week, I meet with donors and I’m privileged to hear how Craig has touched each one. Some donors give to Craig because they were patients at one time. Others give in honor of the care a friend or loved one received. Still others give because they were inspired by a TV news story or because they feel fortunate that we have a world-class spinal cord and brain injury rehab center in Colorado.

In this year’s annual report, we celebrate you, our donors. Thank you for opening your hearts. You make Craig possible.

Gratefully,

Mary Konrad Feller / Executive Director / Craig Hospital Foundation

A Message from the President and CEOI recently announced that I will be retiring at the end of December after serving as CEO for 10 years and as a board member for several years before that.

I am exceptionally proud of how far we have come, both in the quality of our facilities and programs and in the stability of our fundraising department. It is because of donors like you that we are able to empower the lives of every patient who comes through our doors. I treasure the relationships I have built with each of you, and as I prepare to turn the reins over to the next Craig leader, I know that he or she will be able to rely on your support.

For our patients,

Mike Fordyce / President and CEO / Craig Hospital

No matter the story, each donor has a heart for our patients and their families.

Thank you for your selflessness and love.

Business & Corporate DonorGE Johnson Construction Company

GE Johnson Construction Company has been honored to work with Craig Hospital for many years on the hospital’s major expansion and renovation projects. The relationship that we have developed is one of a true family - it is reciprocal and without barriers, and it runs across all levels of our organizations, from management to the workers in the field.

Craig is special because of the quality of the people involved with the organization. The tremendous average tenure of Craig employees and leadership speaks to both Craig’s culture and the viability of their mission. When we truly became connected with Craig, we couldn’t help but become involved at an elevated level.

GE Johnson chooses to give back to Craig Hospital because it is providing possibilities for people very few in the world can - and doing it from a nonprofit platform. Craig is a part of something larger than itself every day and provides a new definition to terms like drive, humility, inspiration, achievement and selflessness.

We know that the dollars we give are in good hands, as Craig is an excellent steward of donations. Through our giving, we get to help empower people’s lives and help Craig patients achieve the “impossible.”

Craig Signature Events The Craig Foundation produces a variety of signature events each year to raise money for Craig patients, programs and research.

These events would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors like GE Johnson.

This scenic cycling event also supports the Craig Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund. The ride along the foothills in Boulder and Larimer Counties features courses for all skill levels and abilities: 10K, 30K, 50K, 100K and 100 mile. In 2017, the third annual Pedal 4 Possible ride raised more than $150,000 to support Craig Hospital. The 2018 event will take place on Sept. 15. pedal4possible.org

This day on the links at the exclusive Sanctuary Golf Course raises money for the Craig Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund, which supports the programs in greatest need. These contributions provide the hospital with the most flexibility in addressing the particular needs of the institution each year. Now in its 21st year, the event has raised more than $3.1 million. Foundation DonorThe Daniels Fund

The Daniels Fund, established by cable television pioneer Bill Daniels, is a private charitable foundation dedicated to making life better for the people of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming through its grants program, scholarship program and ethics initiative.

We have provided $3.2 million in grants to the Craig Foundation over the years to support the Redefining ROI Capital Campaign, provide durable medical equipment to patients, fund cutting-edge rehabilitation equipment, and sponsor the PUSH Gala.

We also established the Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Fund to help emergency services personnel being treated at Craig and their families. This fund covers expenses to reduce the hardship for families of injured U.S. military, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMTs/paramedics who need to travel to be with their loved ones while they are in treatment.

Bill Daniels was known for his generosity and his compassion for those in need. He was inspired to direct the Daniels Fund Grants Program to support programs for people with disabilities, in part because of personal experiences with disabilities within his family and his own experience as he aged. He felt people should be valued for what they could do, not what they couldn’t. Our goal for funding in the area of physical disabilities is to help people gain access to life-altering, durable equipment that increases their independence and quality of life.

Our partnership with a highly effective organization such as Craig Hospital has allowed us to help provide access to leading care and equipment to those who need it and maximize the impact of Bill’s legacy in this area.

10

Rehabilitation Equipment In addition to their support of Craig patients, the Daniels Fund has provided significant support for rehabilitation equipment at Craig.

Craig Hospital recieved a 2017 grant of $345,000 from Daniels Fund for hospital and patient equipment

Page 12: President and CEO - Craig Hospital · 2017 ANNUAL REPORT A Message from the Executive Director Everyone has a story. ... 2016 – Sept. 30, 2017 2017 ANNUAL REPORT May 19 Aug 8 Sept

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

A 2017 grant of $345,000 for hospital and patient equipment allowed Craig to purchase an upgraded Ekso robotic exoskeleton that enables intensive gait training to support patients as they relearn correct step patterns and weight shifts. The upgraded Ekso offers a variable assist feature that makes exoskeleton training more applicable to the brain injury and stroke population.

With the 2017 Daniels Fund grant, Craig also purchased eight Xcite FES (functional electrical stimulation) systems for the Outpatient Clinic, NeuroRecovery Network Physical and Occupational Therapies, Physical Therapy department and the PEAK Center. FES is a physical and occupational therapy rehabilitation modality used to evoke

functional movements and exercise not otherwise possible for individuals with neurological impairments. The system delivers up to 12 channels of electrical stimulation to nerves, which activate core, leg and arm muscles in sequence to promote functional movement and neuromuscular re-education.

“We are grateful to the Daniels Fund for ensuring access to the most cutting-edge rehabilitation equipment,” says Mary Feller, executive director of the Foundation. “Their support is making it possible for every Craig graduate to resume his or her life with greater ease, independence, safety and dignity.”

THIS SUPPORT ALLOWS CRAIG GRADUATES TO RESUME THEIR LIVES WITH GREATER EASE, INDEPENDENCE, SAFETY AND DIGNITY.

Rehabilitation EquipmentIn addition to their support of Craig patients, the Daniels Fund has provided significant support for rehabilitation equipment at Craig. These tools advance patients’ health, independence and life quality by allowing therapists to provide them with the latest in therapy modalities.

Bill Daniels Bill Daniels was a visionary business leader whose compassion for people, and unwavering ethics and integrity earned him respect throughout his life. He grew up during the Great Depression, served his nation as a decorated fighter pilot, and became a driving force in establishing the cable television industry.

Bill’s passion for helping others inspired him to create the Daniels Fund to extend his legacy of generosity far beyond his lifetime. Upon Bill’s death in 2000, his $1 billion estate transferred to the Daniels Fund, a private foundation providing grants and scholarships.

Individual Donors

We first heard about Craig when we were living in southwestern Colorado following our retirements. The son of a friend sustained a traumatic brain injury and rehabilitated at Craig Hospital. Another acquaintance was also helped by Craig following an injury.

After our careers in law enforcement and the legal field, we were slightly cynical and skeptical about humanity—and even many nonprofit organizations. But we knew that individuals who sustained catastrophic injuries like these needed our help. We came to Englewood, took a tour of Craig, and decided to become quarterly donors.

Over the years we have given to the areas of greatest need at Craig, as well as to the Patient Assistance Funds and the capital construction

project. We currently support Craig’s Community Reintegration program, which helps graduates return to their work, schools or communities.

We have also joined the Frank Craig Society and have included Craig in our estate plans. We don’t have a close family, so we like knowing that our assets will go to an organization we feel comfortable with. We can see the results of our philanthropy in the stories of the people who are helped. We feel good about our giving and knowing that we can do a little something to help alleviate the pain of people who are going through tough situations.

If you’re ever driving through Larimer County and you catch a glimpse of a car proudly displaying Craig license plates … be sure to give us a wave!

14

Community Reintegration For more than 30 years, Craig’s Community Reintegration (CR) program has helped Craig graduates return to work or other meaningful activities through an innovative program that:

The CR program gives individuals the skills and opportunity to become economically self-sufficient again.

Jim and Yvonne French

Page 16: President and CEO - Craig Hospital · 2017 ANNUAL REPORT A Message from the Executive Director Everyone has a story. ... 2016 – Sept. 30, 2017 2017 ANNUAL REPORT May 19 Aug 8 Sept

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Often, inpatient program participants will work in nonclinical departments throughout the hospital in areas closely relating to their own work history. This gives the patients an opportunity to demon-strate their ability to perform work-related tasks and assess equipment and accommodation needs.

Once the patient has returned to work, the CR staff visits him or her at the worksite weekly or as needed to ensure things are going well; the visits slowly taper off as the patient and employer begin to feel more comfortable.

When patients cannot return to a job after injury or if they were previously unemployed, the CR team helps them explore their interests and pursue educational opportunities.

Craig is one of only a few rehabilitation hospitals that offer a program like Community Reintegration. This valuable program is rarely covered by insurance and relies on donations from individuals like Jim and Yvonne to serve patients.

MOST CRAIG PATIENTS DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR VOCATIONAL SERVICES. THE COMMUNITY REINTEGRATION PROGRAM SERVED 260 PATIENTS IN CALENDAR YEAR 2017.

Community ReintegrationThe Community Reintegration (CR) program works toward reintegrating patients back into their former work environment whenever possible. Returning to work is most successful when people can retain the job they held prior to the injury, capitalizing on pre-injury success and the social relationships and support from their prior employer.

Alumni DonorsChris and Nic Classick

In 2007, Nic was traveling on business in San Francisco. We aren’t entirely sure what happened, but we believe that he had a heart attack in the airport and fell, hitting his head on the marble floor.

Nic was in a coma for nearly five months, followed by six months of inpatient rehabilitation at Craig Hospital and a year of outpatient therapy.

From the beginning, we said that we were the luckiest people in the world to be in the unluckiest situation. It was our family and friends, and the Craig staff, who gave us the strength to go on. They wouldn’t take “we can’t do that” as an answer.

The doctors in San Francisco told us that we probably wouldn’t see Nic smile again due to the injury to his frontal lobe. Today he’s more animated and talkative than we could have expected.

He works out in the PEAK Center three days a week, and we still travel and spend time with our family. Our grandkids love playing with Grandpa NicNic. Our roles have changed, and our life in retirement looks different than we thought it would, but our life together is sweet.

With the help of family and friends, we decided to set up the Nic Classick TBI Patient Assistance Fund with the Craig Hospital Foundation as a way for us to personally give back. This fund allows Craig’s clinical care managers to meet the financial needs of TBI patients and their families. We have been fortunate to have a positive outcome and are glad that we are able to help in this way.

As Nic says, it feels good to be able to help and to feel like we are part of the recovery process for other folks like us.

The Nic Classick TBI Patient Assistance Fund, a subset of the general Patient Assistance Funds at the Craig Foundation, provides a safety net for patients and families whose financial means (including insurance) are inadequate to meet the financial burdens associated with a catastrophic brain injury. These funds help patients buy equipment, train caregivers, make travel arrangements, access interpretation services, receive needed medical or dental care, and meet transitional financial emergencies. Craig’s brain injury clinical care managers handle requests for support from this fund on behalf of their patients, and payments are made directly to vendors or suppliers.

Outpatient services and NeuroRecovery Network program $24,080 2.3%

Interpretive services $108,831 10.4%

$1,042,226 100.0%

$1,042,226 was distributed from all of the Craig Foundation Patient Assistance Funds in 2017.

The Nic Classick TBI Patient Assistance Fund Catastrophic brain and spinal cord injuries are not only physically and psychologically overwhelming, but for many Craig patients they are also financially devastating. Expenses associated with the injuries, often combined with temporary or permanent loss of income on the part of the patient and/or family members who become caregivers, can push families underwater financially.

Community Partner

Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport, combining elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. It is played either outdoors or indoors on badminton-sized courts with slightly modified tennis nets. I always say that pickleball is the perfect sport because everyone can do it, even adaptive athletes, those with special needs, and individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

The most amazing thing about pickleball is the community of more than 4,200 here in the Denver area that has formed around the sport. We benefit from the physical, social and emotional aspects of the game and are passionate about our play and our people. I tell story after story about how pickleball has enhanced our players’ lives. The “Pickleball Family” helped me recover from a serious back surgery and a traumatic brain injury that I sustained in a fall.

I helped advocate for and build the Apex Park and Recreation District’s 24 outdoor courts in Heroes Park at the Simms Street Recreation Center in Arvada, Colorado. When this beautiful facility opened, our community wanted to organize

a tournament that would be open to both recreational and competitive players and that would raise money for Craig Hospital and TBI.

Our first Pickleball for Heroes tournament was held on Labor Day weekend in 2015. Each year the proceeds have benefited Operation TBI Freedom (OTF), now a program of Craig Hospital. Through the event, which is entirely planned by our committee of volunteers, we have raised more than $180,000 for the program. This year we have expanded our fundraising efforts beyond the tournament and our goal is to raise even more for the benefit of the OTF program and Craig Hospital.

I am passionate about honoring the Veterans who have suffered TBIs while paying the price for our freedom. It’s difficult to understand TBI if you haven’t experienced it. Because I have been there, I have a unique understanding of the challenges these brave men and women face.

We hope to see you on the courts for this years Pickleball for Heroes tournament!

24

Operation TBI Freedom The Pickleball for Heroes tournament and our other fundraisers are a way to give back to the brave men and women of our armed forces.

We are so happy to partner with Craig Hospital again for our 2018 tournament on Sept. 1-3, 2018.

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

To meet the service needs of Veterans with TBI, Operation TBI Freedom, a program of Craig Hospital, offers individualized, relationship-oriented case management.

Eligible Veterans are assigned a military support specialist. These OTF staff members have extensive prior military service and are certified brain injury specialists. Their initial focus is twofold: first, working with each Veteran to resolve any immediate crises, second, developing a personalized plan– called the “life plan” -- to advance his or her reintegration into civilian life and increase self-sufficiency over the longer term.

These individualized reintegration plans aim to ensure that Veterans:

• Receive adequate and timely treatment of physical and mental health issues; • Are equipped for long-term financial stability through optimization of earned benefits, a better understanding of financial management, and resources to secure civilian employment; and• Develop healthy relationships with family members, friends and community members.

OTF serves 250-300 Veterans at any given time and up to 500 during the course of an average program year. Since its founding in 2008, OTF has assisted more than 1,500 service members and leveraged approximately $7 million in services and therapies through partnerships with military and community organizations.

AN INCREASING NUMBER OF VETERANS HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE CONFLICTS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.

Operation TBI FreedomWith its five military bases and a Veteran population higher than the national average Colorado has a tremendous need for TBI services. Since 2000, more than 7,200 Veterans in Colorado alone have returned from conflict with TBIs. For those with this serious yet often invisible injury, the transition to civilian life can be especially difficult.

Employee Donor

I have worked in healthcare for almost 30 years, the last 10 at Craig. I am a behavioral attendant in the Brain Injury department. I take care of individuals who might be just coming out of a coma or in the early stages of their recovery. They are “in a fog” and can be a danger to themselves because of their confusion.

My job is to keep patients safe, but I often play a large role in supporting family members. When a family first gets to Craig, the members are often scared and overwhelmed. I earn the family’s trust and help them understand that we are going to protect and help their loved one. I am a friend and an advocate. It’s a hard job, but so rewarding. I give the best care so that the patients can have the best outcomes.

One thing I love about Craig is that we treat the whole person, not just the physical injury. That’s why I give a portion of my paycheck to Craig’s Therapeutic Recreation department, through the Craig Foundation’s Employee Giving Campaign, so that the program can continue to offer outings and recreational opportunities to our patients. It’s so great that the therapists in that department say, “Yes, you’ve had a life-changing injury, but you’re still the same person, and you like the same things you always did—let’s go out and do stuff.” I know that the money I give to the Craig Foundation goes right back to the patients in this program, and it’s an honor to support T-Rec this way. It’s the best thing in the world to see the patients that I’ve cared for getting back into the community and finding their identity again.

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Each Craig inpatient is assigned a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS) who serves as an important member of the patient’s treatment team. The therapist will evaluate the patient and suggest activities ranging from gardening, music, arts and crafts to various sports. Patients can try a variety of different activities and return to a previous interest, or find a new one.

Ongoing research and over 40 years of experience at Craig Hospital demonstrate that therapeutic recreation helps many patients make dramatic improvements in their overall functioning.

When patients take part in recreation activities, they are doing more than having fun – they’re assimilating and practicing in real-life settings the skills they are learning in therapy.

“At Craig, rehabilitation is more than just getting up and learning to get dressed and move in a chair, says Tom Carr, director of Therapeutic Recreation. “To the staff at Craig, that does not equate to a full life. We are helping people return to the passions that define them or helping them discover new ways to enjoy their lives.”

WE ARE HELPING PEOPLE RETURN TO THE PASSIONS THAT DEFINE THEM OR HELPING THEM DISCOVER NEW WAYS TO ENJOY THEIR LIVES.

Therapeutic RecreationFrom the tops of mountains to the bottom of the sea, you’ll find Craig Hospital patients and graduates exploring and being active thanks to Craig’s Therapeutic Recreation department. The donor-funded program uses sports, recreation and leisure opportunities to re-engage patients and their families with life and meet important therapeutic goals.

Frank Craig Society Members

My faith led me to Craig. As a transplant to Colorado in 1989, I had heard about Craig in a news story. It was in 2002 that I felt that God was nudging me and telling me that this was a place I should check out. I made some calls and began volunteering for the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy departments.

One day when I was attending an outing with Craig, a patient broke down and confided that he didn’t know how he could possibly pay for the equipment he would need when he went home. I thought about it, talked with my wife, Victoria, and realized that I could do more for patients like him.

In consultation with then-CEO Denny O’Malley and then-Craig Foundation Director Barb Page, I began to study the feasibility of raising money

specifically to provide durable medical equipment to patients in need. Using my background in sales and marketing, I launched an extensive outreach campaign, and in conjunction with Denny and Barb, we raised more than $500,000 for the fund in 2004, the fund’s first full year in existence. We dubbed it “Project EQL: Equipment for a Quality Life.” In the years since then, the fund has helped hundreds of patients.

Victoria and I are honored to be able to “pay it forward” in support of Craig, including leaving a portion of our estate to the hospital through our membership in the Frank Craig Society. We have found that in philanthropy, the person who is doing the giving gets the majority of the benefits. We feel grateful knowing that we are able to help people in need.

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Equipment needs are unique to each patient. Examples include power or manual wheelchairs, a lift that allows family members to transfer their loved one into a bed, a shower chair that enables daily self-care, and other tools that advance safety, independence, opportunity and dignity. A person with an acute spinal cord injury, for example, requires basic adaptive equipment that ranges in cost from $86,150 to $118,600, depending on the injury. The majority of insurance companies do not cover these expenses fully. These costs are on top of the already immense financial burdens associated with catastrophic injury.

When Craig’s clinical care managers discover that insurance, family resources and other funding options are inadequate to cover the cost of needed equipment for a patient, Project EQL bridges the gap. Each year, generous contributors to Project EQL help 170 to 200 recently injured patients whose income or insurance benefits would otherwise be insufficient to pay for basic adaptive equipment. Project EQL funds are paid directly to equipment suppliers. By ensuring access to essential adaptive equipment, supporters of Project EQL make it possible for every Craig graduate to resume his or her life with greater ease, independence, safety and dignity.

BASIC ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT RANGES IN COST FROM $86,150 TO $118,600

Project EQL : Equipment for a Quality LifeFrom the time of a patient’s admission, Craig teams are thinking ahead about the adaptive equipment and support the individual and his or her family will need at discharge.
