Digital Preservation in the Netherlands• Netherlands Coalition for Digital Preservation (2008)• Goal: shared organisational and technical infrastructure for digital
preservation• “Together where possible, individually where necessary”
• Knowledge sharing• Practical projects
• 2014 5 projects: Enhanced Publications one of them
Digital Heritage Network (NDE)
“Visible, usable and sustainable digital heritage”

Enhanced Publications in Practice
• Work package started in 2014• Goal:
• Theory: Literature review on developments on enhanced publications• Practice:
• What is different compared to the analogue world?• How is collecting an enhanced publication done today?• Who is responsible for which part of the enhanced publication?• Recommendations to improve the situation

Literature Enhanced Publications introduced in 2007 Driver Project
“An enhanced publication is a publication that is enriched with three categories of information: • research data (evidence of the research)• extra materials (to illustrate or clarify) • post-publication data (commentaries, ranking)” (Driver project)
• Important contribution of the Dutch partners esp. repositories• Development of “models”• Recent publications in Liber Quarterly by Bardi, A & P. Manghi*
• Focus on “publications”
Enhanced Publications: Data Models and Information Systems. Bardi, A. en Manghi, P. Liber Quarterly, vol 23, (2014) nr. 4 pp. 240-273

Terminology discussion
• Work package partners were asked for examples• Big variety• Decided to rename the work package
“Digital objects in digital context”
Two types• Context added by the content holder (type A)• Context added by the “author” (type B)

The Dutch preservation landscape

Doctoral thesisPractical, obvious use case: doctoral thesis (around 3500 annually)Doctorate regulations:• Prescribe deposit of electronic version in Institutional Repository• No mention of related data (yet)• No rules for persistent identifiers, metadata etc• No awareness where to deposit related datasets
Three content holders involved for long term preservation: KB for the publicationsDANS and 3TU for the datasets

Complications
(at least) Two more partners might be involved in preserving parts:- National Archive, based on legal reponsibility to some universities- Related datasets are not preserved by DANS or 3TU
- Institute for Sound and Vision
Barbara Sierman: Preservation of Enhanced Publications. Liber Conference 2015, London 13
Conclusions for doctorate thesis
- Prescribe use of Persistent Identifier for both publications and data- Added by the candidate doctorate (no manual work afterwards!)- Integrate this as metadata in the flow to the Scientific Portal NARCIS- Make datasets available via NARCIS- Let NARCIS visualize the Enhanced Publications

Recommendations
• Universities: • Update the doctorate regulations (PIDs, datasets)• Facilitate doctorate candidates (references)• Update the research portal NARCIS
• Create infrastructure for the use of Persistent Identifiers
• Content holders: • Be aware of contextual material (metadata)• Inform each other about your preservation policies• Who collects / preserves what?
