Dear Siblings in Christ,

As I’ve been privileged to observe several Strategic Planning Focus Groups, a few recurring themes seem to repeat themselves. One of those themes that I’d like to address is the core identity of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Understanding who we are as a body of Christ is instrumental in celebrating and articulating our values, our focus, and our purpose. By identifying our core identity, we in no way disparage or diminish the core values of other churches in our community, whether they are inside or outside our own particular denomination. It’s simply important that we state clearly who we are and what we have to offer that might be unique to Rapid City and the world.

We are Episcopalian. The Episcopal Church

in the United States recognizes the importance of the succession of apostles as it passed from Jesus’ first disciples continuing throughout the history of the Church’s bishops, including surviving the Anglican split with Rome and the US Church’s split with England. This unbroken continuity is a vital part of our identity. Bishop John Tarrant oversees the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota, uniting us in service and vision to the other area Episcopal Churches across our state.

We are ‘by the book(s).’ The Bible contains

everything necessary for salvation. It’s why we read and study scripture a lot! Every Eucharist, Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and all other services contain tons of Bible passages. Additionally, our Book of Common Prayer (which is chock full of scripture) ensures that our prayer and worship is tied together universally by a single common thread. What is being prayed in one part of the world is also being prayed in another at the same time on the same day!

We are sacramental. While Holy Baptism

and Eucharist are preeminent, the other traditional sacraments of the church are also retained here: Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick, and Reconciliation. Sacraments are outward signs of inward grace. The power of that reality is why we say that we ‘celebrate’ sacraments at Emmanuel.

We are liturgical. Because our existence is one of body and soul, we use our bodies and souls in our worship. Movement up the aisle, embracing each other at the peace, eating and drinking at the Communion rail, kneeling, singing, and many other physical gestures communicate that we are fully engaged in our prayer to God with each other. At Emmanuel, we value our liturgical practices, as it not only connects us with the people sitting in the pew next to us, but connects us to those who have gone before us and those who will come after us.

We are traditional. St. Paul wrote in his

Second Letter to the Thessalonians (2:15), “…stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.” This Bible passage demonstrates that not everything in the early church made it into the Bible. Therefore, tradition has an important place in our religious experience. Our generation is a caretaker of traditions which are to be preserved, practiced, and passed on to the next generation.

We are reason-able. Science and philosophy

do not contradict God’s revelation, they accentuate it. We are able to use reason, which is a gift given us by God who continually seeks to reveal Himself and His plans for us.

We are Emmanuel – God with Us. I firmly

believe that there are many others in our community who would find great comfort in a church that is: Episcopalian, by the book(s), sacramental, liturgical, traditional, reason-able, and Emmanuel.

Let us celebrate who we are. Let us live out

who we are with fidelity and enthusiasm. Let us never apologize for our core identity – disciples of Jesus Christ.

In Christ Jesus,

From the Rector

Fr. Chris Roussell Rector

3 Report from the Senior Warden

Bob Ermish Junior Warden

Report from the Junior Warden Ah Spring, glorious Spring! Sunshine, flowers, gardens, and of course honey-dos. Yes, this is the time of year that wives start making lists of good, constructive things we can do so that we don’t have to waste a sunny Saturday fishing or playing golf or tennis or mountain biking or similar pointless activities. We can enjoy ourselves painting the house, refinishing the deck, fertilizing the lawn, or hauling dirt for yet another flower garden. I believe that is why Mother’s Day is in the Spring, so we can show our appreciation for our wives’ thoughtfulness. As Junior Warden though, I have to admit that I can sort of see their point of view. There are things that need doing to keep our homes looking nice, and that includes our church home. We have scheduled our spring cleanup, paint up, fix-up day at the church for May 22 this year, following the 10:15 coffee hour. Lunch will be provided thanks to our wonderful ECW. We do have a few items on the honey-do list already, but welcome any thoughts or suggestions you might have. You can send your thoughts to [email protected], or call me at 430-4750. Please consider joining us for a couple of hours of “what is more fun than hauling manure” to keep our home the beautiful place it is.

Thanks.

For my April Senior Warden's report, I really just want to take a moment to thank EVERYONE involved in this year's Holy Week. I hope you had the opportunity to come to church and participate in some of the services that led us into Easter Sunday! I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to be at church for much of Holy Week; my spiritual cup feels especially full! Maundy Thursday’s service was incredibly moving. The Youth Group’s presentation of the Living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday was powerful and very well done. The Saturday

Easter Vigil Service was an amazing celebration (my favorite service of the year)! It felt great to say those Alleluias again! Easter Sunday was triumphant and beautiful and capped off by a very well-attended Easter egg hunt! It brings me such joy to witness the strong presence of the Holy Spirit in our church! Thank you for all you do, Emmanuel. I’ll see you at church!

4 Creation Care

Earth Day is Friday, April 22, 2016. The first Earth Day was celebrated 46 years ago on April 22, 1970. That day across the USA, over 20 million people took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums and demonstrated the desire to clean up and protect the environment. At that time, most Americans were oblivious to changes in the environment. Oil spills, V8 engines in cars that burned leaded gas, industry that spewed

toxic chemicals into the air or sludge into rivers and streams was common. After decades of pollution from industrial waste, the Cuyahoga River in the state of Ohio “caught fire” in 1969. As unbelievable as this is to us in 2016, this was not the first time fire burned on the river! The social unrest of the 1960’s and the inspiration of Rachel Carson’s book, Silent Spring led Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, to begin to develop a movement to raise national awareness about air and water pollution. He persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. Together, they recruited Denis Hayes from Harvard as National Coordinator of the movement. Earth Day 1970 gathered the momentum of Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and country folk, young and old, business executives and labor leaders, to begin to work together and realize the possibilities of their shared values. That year marked the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, and legislation that included the Clean Air, Clean Water, and the Endangered Species Acts. The world is becoming ever more complicated these 46 years following that first Earth Day in 1970. The issues of climate change, epidemic illnesses, and population growth just to name a few are becoming more complex. We share this earth and much of our DNA with 7.4 billion people, with birds and mammals, insects and reptiles, plants and mushrooms and molds, viruses, and microscopic creatures. Huge events happen amidst a swirl of life all around us. As Episcopalians and Christians, we recognize the privilege and duty of caring for God’s creation. We celebrate this in our liturgy. We pray with our children and teach them of the importance of responsible use of all of our resources and caring for one another. We participate by reducing, reusing, and recycling in our daily lives. Staying informed, involved, and faith-filled is not just a good idea; it is the hope for the future.

We will celebrate Earth Day Sunday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on

Sunday, April 24, 2016.

~~~
Come pray and celebrate this 46th Earth Day Sunday with your family and
Parish Family!
5 Health and Wellness Greetings and great peace to you all! “I have come that you may have life and have life more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Spring is finally here and Easter is celebrated. The Redeemer is
victorious. Spring is known for its new flowers, green grass, and budding leaves. Farmers are tilling and planting crops and grains. Spring is all about getting out of the house and socializing amongst our friends, family, and the earth. It is this reason we ask, is there a correlation between church attendance and health of mind, body, and soul?
“I was glad when they said to me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Psalms 122:1)
A study done by Robert Hummer at the University of Texas showed that non-church attendees had a 50 percent higher risk of mortality than regular churchgoers. Worshiping and gathering together in the church gives support and sociability to each other.
“And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.” (Exodus. 25:8)
Duke University Medical Center reveals in one of its studies that religious activities such as prayer, attending worship, and Bible reading improve health and lower blood pressure. Also, shared religious activities and faith help to prevent depression and emotional distress, dispel fear of death, and help to maintain one’s self-esteem, as reported from a study done by the University of Connecticut.
Interested in participating in a walking/hiking/snowshoeing group?
If so, please meet in the Emmanuel Church parking lot
Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 9 a.m. (notice time change!)
There has been some interest by church members that we form a hiking group that would meet 1 or 2 times a month throughout the year and do some type of walking exercise. Men and women of all ages and levels of physical ability are encouraged and welcome to participate. Let us hear your ideas of how this type of activity could make wellness fun! Getting out, enjoying God’s creation during all the seasons, and getting to know one another in a new way would be awesome!!! Please contact Mara Vucurevich (484-0660) or Vicki Sweet (390-8558) if you have any questions.
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,
as is the manner of some,
but exhorting one another, and so much the more
as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)
ECW Spring Fling Luncheon
I would like to thank all the youth that participated in the Talent Show! The Pillow People may have to make a few return visits in the years to come. Without your participation, it could not have happened. I also want to thank Joseph Luciano for helping me to create the Pillow People.
The youth participation was essential also in the presentation of the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, March 25. Thank you to all who attended and supported the youth, and thank you to the youth that participated and provided such a wonderful gift to the parish. There are 8 more Wednesday Night Youth Group meetings until Fall. But there is still plenty on the schedule to keep us busy:
