The beautiful tradition of a musical TOY DRIVE was started by Arkady Fomin during the 1980s in Dallas, TX. These wonderful concerts became a staple of holiday celebrations in Dallas, toured in Europe and to New York’s Lincoln Center. The North Shore Chamber Music Festival is pleased to continue this touching initiative by raising funds for toys and books for children at the Lurie Children’s Hospital and Bright Star Community Outreach. Our young performers today and their families would like to share with everyone the joy of music and the holiday spirit!

The Betty Haag Academy of Music was founded by violinist Betty Haag-Kuhnke, who for the past 40 years has offered musical instruction in violin, viola, piano, note reading, and repertoire classes to children of all ages and races. Academy students have performed at Carnegie Hall, the White House, Vatican City in Italy and enjoyed concert tours all over Europe, Russia, China, Singapore, and Australia. Celebrated artists, such as Ricci, Midori, Gluzman, Rosand, Shaham, Repin, and Gingold, have worked directly with its violin students, creating experiences that will influence the rest of their lives.

The Academy features a unique teaching philosophy which first introduces the pre-school age child to music using the Suzuki method. Mrs. Haag, who worked directly with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in his homeland of Japan, now uses the Suzuki method as the foundation for the young child’s instruction, and incorporates note reading and other forms of traditional music study. Students of all levels of proficiency are offered opportunities to perform in repertoire classes, recitals, solo appearances, and the Academy’s annual Chicago Symphony Center concert. The students also perform regularly throughout the local community at libraries, community centers, and other venues, including educational workshops.

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago provides superior pediatric care in a setting that offers the latest benefits and innovations in medical technology, research and family-friendly design. As the largest pediatric provider in the region with a 138-year legacy of excellence, kids and their families are at the center of all they do.

Throughout its proud nine-year history, Bright Star Community Outreach has made significant contributions to the renewal of Chicago’s most vulnerable communities as a 501C3 nonprofit organization. Driven by its hope for change in this city and the families that call it home, Bright Star’s presence has been marked by effective and impactful programming, social development, and advocacy; particularly in the 3rd and 4th ward of Chicago’s south side.
