Welcome to ((Smokey Joe's Cafe"Often called the "Rodgers and Hammerstein of Rock 'n Roll", Jerry Leiber

and Mike Stoller didn't invent rock and roll, but they did create some of the mostpowerful and recognizable early icons of the music, and this show pays homage tothem. Their timeless songs provide the basis for this electrifying entertainment thathad critics raving and audiences stampeding the box office during its record-break-ing Broadway run. Each lyric is a self-contained story set to a take-home tune andcollectively they celebrate a golden age of American Culture. "Smokey Joe's Cafe"transforms classic pop music into compelling musical theater.

It opened at the Virginia Theatre on Broadway to rave reviews on March 2,1995, where it ran for five years to become the longest-running musical revue inthe history of Broadway. It received 7 Tony nominations in 1994-1995 and wasawarded a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. Over the years, there have beenthree major national tours, breaking box office records at numerous performingarts centers, as well as resident casts in both Las Vegas and Reno. After a two-yearrun in London's West End, it was nominated in 1997 for the Sir Laurence Olivieraward for "outstanding musical production."

These two composers wrote specifically for two famous African-Americanquartets-The Drifters and The Coasters. The Drifters were smooth as silk, sexyand irresistible; the Coasters were promoted as "the clown princes of rock and roll"and delivered hectic mayhem onstage, almost an extension of vaudeville clowning, but entirely in song.

Leiber and Stoller also wrote for two powerful figures of white rock androll-Dion (of Dion and the Belmonts) and, of course, Elvis Presley. When thesetwo composers wrote "Hound Dog", they were so young their mothers had to signtheir publishing contract for the song.

Through these songs, you will see our characters gradually make their waythrough the performance, moving from innocence to experience and naiveteto wisdom-all those facets of life that most of us have already experienced-romance, laughter, regret, heartache and a certain contained recklessness. To thebaby-boom generation, these songwriters are as sacrosanct as George Gershwin isto their parents.

and cultural programs such as ours. Herein the BayArea, we are fortunate to havemany companies that have initiated suchprograms. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU mustnotify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If you areemployed by one of these companies andare one of our supporters, take advantageof this wonderful way to support oneof your favorite non-profit associations,WVLO. It isn't too late to match yourcontribution for this season.

Corporate BonusWhenever you donate to a non-profitgroup like WVLOA, you can double yourcontribution ro the organization by takingadvantage of your company's matchinggift program (even after retirement).Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributionsis through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one oftheir employees gives to a favorite char-ity. And often, these companies will onlymatch contributions made to develop arts
