ME AND MY GIRL Me And My Girl was originally conceived as another story for the character of Bill Snibson who had appeared on London’s West End in a horseracing comedy play called Twenty To One and featured Lupino Lane. This new show opened in 1937 and attracted little attention until the BBC radio broadcast an excerpt from the production and it went on to break box office records and became the second longest running musical comedy to that point. It ran on the West End for 1,646 performances and even King George VI and Queen Elizabeth saw the show three times. One of the songs, ‘The Lambeth Walk,’ became a dance craze at the time. The musical was revived on the West End in 1941, 1945 and 1949 totalling more than 5,000 London performances. Back in 1939 it also became the first musical comedy to be televised and its popularity led to the movie which was entitled The Lambeth Walk. It wasn’t until 1982 that the composer’s son, Richard Armitage, began to think about reviving the show again. He realised it needed a new book and a reworked score and employed a young Stephen Fry to update the show and strengthen the role of the central characters, while Noel Gay’s song catalogue was used to augment the show as additional songs were included. Me And My Girl opened on the West End in 1985 and ran for eight years with 3,303 performances and won an Olivier Award for Robert Lindsay who starred as Bill Snibson, while his girlfriend, Sally, was played by the new up and coming actress Emma Thompson. The show then crossed the Atlantic and opened on Broadway with Robert Lindsay again as Bill Snibson. It ran for 1,420 performances and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Choreographer. Jim Dale replaced Robert Lindsay during the Broadway run and then Tim Curry played Bill Snibson in the major US tour of the show. Me And My Girl is as English as fish ‘n’ chips and a pint of beer! Its depiction of a Cockney invasion of aristocratic ranks has proved irresistible over the years and it continues to be staged all over the world. A 70th year anniversary production had an eight month British tour during 2006. It was also said that back in 1938 after Neville Chamberlain had negotiated what was seen to be the successful Munich Agreement the Parisians stood to attention when they heard ‘The Lambeth Walk’ being played as they thought it was some kind of English national anthem! The musical is set in the late 1930s and tells the story of an unrefined Cockney gentleman named Bill Snibson who learns that he is the 14th heir to the Earl of Hareford and as such is now an aristocrat but must marry someone of his own class. With songs like ‘The Lambeth Walk’, ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’ and the popular ‘Leaning On A Lamppost’ the show is unapologetically English. So sit back and enjoy tonight’s performance of Me And My Girl. So take it on the chin, turn on a little grin and smile………….
