As the Director, it is my duty to tell you that "A FunnyThing Happened On The Way to The Forum" is the mostdelightful show that you have ever seen and you will likeit! OK ... they made me say that. But, in all honesty, thisis one of my absolutely favorite musicals.

I must say that when they offered me the opportunity todirect, I was thrilled and delighted. OK ... the truth is, thejob of Director was originally offered to comedy super-star, Carol Burnett... I just happened to be in the roomwhen she declined. But I was thrilled nonetheless. Wegot right to work creating and revising the schedule andwe will probably start rehearsing sometime next week-as soon as we resolve everyone's schedule conflicts!

"Forum" is a high-speed, continuous motion show whichrequires a great deal of stamina from the cast. (This isdefinitely not a show for the weak or faint-of-hear actor.)Eight weeks of rehearsal have gone into this whimsicalfarce to entertain you this evening. If we've done our job,the momentum of this show will leave you humming"Comedy Tonight" on your way home.

Having said all that, I invite you to sit back and relax asWest Valley Light Opera presents ... "A Funny ThingHappened On The Way To The Forum" ... Enjoy.

Tino J. Cecilio

RUTH E. MULLINS (Domina) You will remember Ruthie from lastseason's production of "Nunsense II" for which she won the ERMAaward as Best Character Actress for her portrayal of Sister MaryAmnesia (the country singing nun with the puppet). A resident ofGilroy, Ruthie has a degree in Fine Arts and has been involved withtheater since she was 10. Most of her theatrical credits are withSVCT and include "The King & I", "Music Man", "Mame", ''TheSound of Music", "Annie Get Your Gun", "Pump Boys & Dinettes" &"1940's Radio Hour". And then, in her spare time, Ruthie is a Banking Manager for Wells FargoBank. One thing we promised Ruthie was that we would not allow anyone to take her"bust" to the bank!!

C. J. BLANKENSHIP (Miles Gloriosus) Another first timer withWVLOA, C.J. comes to us fresh from several classes to expand hisknowledge of musical theater. He attended the voice classes withAMTSJ for several months, studied Polynesian music & dance for3 years; spent one year with the San Francisco Taiko DojoJapanese drumming group and was a dancer with the Mills CollegeGraduate Dance Works. Having all those 'glorious' muscles did-n't hurt, either! We look forward to keeping C.J. interested in ourtheatrical productions where he can "do it ail"!

DONALD BENSON (Erronius) This will be Donald's fourth produc-tion with WVLOA. He was last seen in "Singin' In The Rain" andprior to that, "Good News" and "My Fair Lady". TINO CECILIO (Director) Back in 1980 Tino did his first show withWVLOA as a member of the chorus in "Wonderful Town". Now, six-teen years later, he returns to once again work withChoreographer, Nancy Kwong. Tino and Nancy have been workingas a team since 1988 and some of their more recent shows include"Nunsense" , "Nunsense II" & "Gypsy" for WVLOA. Tino feel veryfortunate to have met such a talented young lady. This directorcomes to us without some merit. Having struggled through threeyears of Junior college and two grueling years of SJSU to earn adegree in accounting, he became a man of the world, wised up and

abandoned that career. Now, an active member of the theater community, you may haveseen some of Tino's work at Gaslighter Theater, MHS, SDG, AMTSJ (then SJCLO), SJStage Company, SCP and Opry House of Almaden. For the past six years Tino has pro-duced and directed the Timpany Center's Celebration of Courage which was broadcaston KNTV. In his spare time he is Executive Producer for Personal Productions and per-forms for Mystery By Design dinner theater. We are always grateful when Tino agreesto take time out of his busy schedule to direct for us. His motto ..."Accidents create someof my best work."

FAY PEnNER (Music & Vocal Director) Last season's theatergoers will remember Fay as the "Sister" Music Director for"Nunsense II" and we are very happy to have her back. During thepast ten years, she has been very busy with productions at SVCT,Old City Hall-Center Stage, Gilroy Under the Stars and severalother Bay Area theaters. This will be her twenty-eighth musicalproduction. Active in many ways, she has enjoyed theater life work-ing as play director, musical director, orchestra conductor and per-former. In her spare time, she teaches piano and organ, serves asher church organist and choral director. And the rest of her time isfilled keeping pace with three young, very active and very musicalgrandsons. Welcome back, Fay!

WHO'S WHO ON OUR STAFF

NANCY KWONG (Choreographer) This marks Nancy's eighthWVLOA production, two of which were part of last season, "Gypsy"and "Nunsense II". But her "best" production to date, she says, isher now 11-month old son, Cameron. Nancy's other terpsichoreancredits include productions for Gaslighter Theater, SCP, SDG, andTheatreworks. Nancy received her BA from CSU and her Mastersin Speech Pathology from SJSU and now uses that education as aspeech therapist at Mid-Peninsula Speech Clinic in Palo Alto.Even though she is busy with the baby, she still finds time to work, choreograph, and work for the speech & hearing impaired through

Quota International of Sunnyvale. Her husband, Edmond, also a performer, just closed'The King & I" for SCP in which he starred as the King. Now they can hardly wait untilCameron can start tap dancing! She wants to particularly thank Russell Galloway for allof his assistance and input on this show as well as Grandma & Grandpa Hand forbabysitting Cameron during this busy period. We are always delighted to have Nancyon our staff.

STEPHEN C. WATHEN (Production Designer) WVLOA audiences are treated onceagain to another incredibly creative set designed by Stephen. His beautiful scenic dropsand innovative sets have provided a realistic background for many of our productions, including last season's "Gypsy" & "Nunsense II". Prior to that he designed "Where'sCharley?", "Meet Me In St. Louis", "Merry Widow", "Oklahoma!", "Kismet", "Music Man"& "Irene". Several other theatrical groups have been the recipient of his talents as well, but his favorites include "Dracula" and his own original play, "Night Of The Demons".From 1987 to 1989, he was the animator for the "Gumby" TV series and most recentlyworked on the Gumby movie. Other film credits include designing and building sets aswell as special effects for "Planet of Dinosaurs", "Birdy" & "Demon hunter". Anyone whoworks with Stephen marvels at his uncanny ability to create the most authentic prop orset piece out of practically nothing. His creative talents always deserve our highestpraise and thanks.

JOE COLLONGE (Lighting Designer) Joe has been "galumphing" through the world ofcommunity theater since the opening line of "Miracle Worker" on this stage 19 years ago.He has done most everything including making it rain for "Singin' In The Rain"; but helikes designing lights best. For WVLOA he has designed "Irene", "Oklahoma!", "MerryWidow", "Nunsense" "I Do! I Do!" and "West Side Story". When not giving Ed Hand grayhair, he works as a consulting electrical engineer.

JOHN J. LADASKY (Stage Manager) "Brother John" enjoyed stage managing for"Nunsense II" so much, he's back for an encore. Most of our regular audience memberswill remember him ON stage as Grandpa Prophater in "Meet Me In St. Louis", but healso appeared in "Music Man", "Oklahoma!", and "Singin' in the Rain". John credits hissons, John, Jr. & Michael (both excellent musicians) for his interest in music and theaterand his supporting roles to his wife, Donna, who has contributed her costuming exper-tise for several WVLOA productions over the years. John loves to go duck hunting whenhe isn't working at Sun Microsystems as an electrical engineer.

GLORIA GRANDY (Costumer) Gloria returns to our staff for her second production, hermost recent was "Gypsy", our opening production last season. She studied business atSJ City College but began her 'costuming' career designing costumes for schools inFremont and local churches. Last May she was the costumer for Timpany Center'sCelebration of Courage which was presented at the Flint Center and starred theSmother's Brothers. During the day she is a receptionist for Empire BroadcastingCompany which owns and operates radio stations KARA, KLiV and KRTY. We haveenjoyed having this congenial and talented lady on our staff.

When you subscribed this season, you could have doubledyour contribution to WVLOA by taking advantage of your com-pany's matching gift program (even after retirement). Perhapsthe most popular way for companies to make charitable con-tributions is through a matching contribution program whereinthe company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation oneof their employees gives to a favorite charity. Here in the BayArea, we are fortunate to have many companies that have ini-tiated such a program. Remember, matching contributionsare not automatic. YOU must notify your employer of yourdonation, usually at the time you make it. If you are employedby one of these companies and are one of our supporters, take advantage of this wonderful way to support one of yourfavorite non-profit associations, WVLO. It isn't too late tomatch your contribution for this season.
