Dear Friends, From the very beginning of my participation in the Miss America Organization, I have been learning. The acute awareness of responsibility for this world came to me from participating here. My first pageant was the impetus for my first steps into the classrooms of a low performing, low income elementary school. From that school came the lessons I needed to lead. I gained passion, which I subsequently learned to impart to others. I found faith in the rising generation, which I needed to face my own peers and to call them to act. Where do I grow from here? I am eager to give back to contestants who want to improve their interpersonal communication skills and to achieve more effective ends with their platform work. I remain active on the Leadership Board of the North Carolina Mentoring Partnership and in other volunteer capacities. I seek to continue my education in human services and to continue the path on which the MAO helped me begin. This is certainly an end, but each day is a beginning. This one is no exception.

Gratitude is the most powerful emotion a woman like me can feel on a day like today. I say often that I don’t know who I would be had I not participated through Miss America. Would I still have terrible stage fright? Would I still fear speaking in public? Would I know how deeply fortunate I have been in my interpersonal relations, upbringing, material abundance, mentors and education? I can’t think of another realm of my life where such a plethora of lessons were available to me. I am tremendously grateful to my family who was skeptical of pageantry but whole heartedly embraced my growth through this process. They footed the bills financially and emotionally as I climbed up and down the hills of progress and growth. Caro, honey, you have to give the pin back. You’ll always be my “chaperone” – that angel of wisdom sitting on my shoulder and giving me courage and advice. Thank-you for being with me this year. The Miss Raleigh Scholarship Organization is filled with people who love the MAO and came to love me with it. I know I never became graceful and I still can’t find my lipstick most of the time, but I promise, you rubbed off. Melissa, your motivation and faith kept the fires fueled, even for those awfully early mornings at Gold’s. Candace, your meticulous attention to detail in my appearance and my presentation on paper allowed me to compete with confidence, and have some fun with my interview. Lisa, thank-you for your shoulder, and that occasional swift kick… Edie thank you for your friendship. Benjamin, I have no words. Please forgive me. You had faith in me when I wasn’t sure there was faith to be found. You drew water from a stone. You picked me up and brushed me off, then puffed me, teased me (both meanings of that word), cut and highlighted me, and made me better than ever. You made every day fun and filled with lessons. You are my hero. I will forever count you among my dearest friends. As I say goodbye I think perhaps my greatest taking from pageantry is the gift of perspective. It is from these experiences as a role model and a servant that I know that material goods, like rhinestone crowns, soon tarnish and are spent. Status, like a title, is fleeting and shallow without a purpose and a benevolent spirit. Service without passion is wasted. Lessons without sharing are stolen. Thank-you all for your gifts. I will miss you and never forget all that you have given to me.

Master of Ceremonies Ira David Wood, III

Founder and Artistic Director of Raleigh's prestigious Theatre In The Park for thirty years, David is a native North Carolinian. A graduate of NC School of the Arts, he first appeared on the stage of Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium as Dr. Drosselmeyer in NCSA's Nutcracker Ballet. During his college years, he was a leading actor in Paul Green's outdoor drama, The Lost Colony, where critics were already referring to him as "...one of the finest actors this state has ever produced." Upon graduation, David served as the state's first Theatre Arts Consultant for the Department of Public Instruction. A year later, he became Executive Director of Theatre In The Park and in order to reflect a broader vision, began the process of transforming the organization into North Carolina's largest community theatre, garnering international acclaim and respect for outstanding artistic achievement. His first local role was Hamlet in TIP's highly acclaimed 1972 production. Of that performance,

the N&O said: "He has star quality - something one must be born with." David premiered the very first season of plays in Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium. His presence in the Triangle area has done much to revitalize and define the theatre scene as it has now come to be known. His subsequent theatre work has taken him such places as China, Afghanistan, Germany, Italy, France and England. David is the only two-time recipient of the Medal of Arts award, presented by the Raleigh Arts Commission for extraordinary achievement. National Business Yearly named him one of the fifty most influential people in the Triangle Area. He wrote and directed the Opening Ceremonies for the U.S. Olympic Festival ‘87...still the largest single event in the history of North Carolina. Gov. James B. Hunt chose to honor David with The Order Of The Long Leaf Pine... the highest honor this state can afford one of its citizens. He has also twice received "Keys To The City Of Raleigh." This past December, he was presented The Build er of Bridges Award from The Babcock Center Foundation in South Carolina. As an actor of remarkable range and ability, David has given theatergoers critically acclaimed performances in such roles as Hamlet, Richard III, Cyrano de Bergerac, Romeo and King Lear. Locally, he is best known and loved for his annual production of A Christmas Carol - in which, for twenty seven consecutive years, he has performed the role of Scrooge. He directs this mammoth production - for which he also adapted the script and composed the original music! David is the proud father of two talented performers in their own right (Ira David IV & Evan Rachel). He was Best Actor In The Triangle - as well as Best Local Hero - in the Spectator's 2001 public opinion poll.

Daughters By: Thomas McDowell God made the world with towering tees, Majestic mountains and restless seas, Then paused and said, “It needs one more thing – Someone to laugh and dance and sing To walk in the woods and gather flowers, To commune with nature in quiet hours,”

So God created daughters With laughing eyes and bouncing curls, A voice that tingles like little pearls With joyful hearts and infectious smiles, Enchanting ways and feminine wiles, And when He’d finished the job that He’d begun He was pleased and proud of the job that He’d begun For the dearest joys of Heaven above Can all be found in a daughter’s love Love Mom, Dad, and Polly
