Message from the Chair

Welcome to the 2016 AFP Golden Horseshoe Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day Celebration. Today marks our 9th Annual National Philanthropy Day Luncheon and on behalf of our Chapter and Board, I want to thank you for joining us. National Philanthropy Day is indeed a signifi cant celebration. We are fortunate in Canada to have this day offi cially recognized by the Government of Canada’s National Philanthropy Day Act. Th is provides a unique opportunity for us to come together to recognize the wonderful philanthropic endeavours that are carried out across the country every day, all year round. Philanthropy is often defi ned as “the love of humankind”. Consequently, it is a genuine privilege to be a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in the Golden Horseshoe and to have an opportunity to partner with individuals, families, foundations and corporations who truly believe in making our communities better, stronger and healthier. Our 170 members have the joy of working alongside true philanthropists who respond to need or opportunity alike with love, compassion and inspired vision. Philanthropy is truly a vibrant force right here in our Golden Horseshoe Region! So today we celebrate YOU: our partners, donors, volunteers and advocates who are such a positive force for good in each of our communities. We celebrate your dedication, your generosity and your remarkable commitment to the causes that you love and support.  Your philanthropy is an inspiration to us all.  We will all have an opportunity to celebrate our 2016 National Philanthropy Day award honourees today and that is really appropriate. But on behalf of our AFP Chapter I want to express sincere heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for your commitment and kindness. You enrich our individual communities with the grace of your dedication and generous involvement.Th ank you for joining us in celebrating YOU today.

Norman Esch was an astute businessman with an entrepreneurial spirit. Although he passed away in 2010, his legacy lives on through Th e Esch Foundation. Established in 2004, the Foundation has made signifi cant contributions to engineering education and a commitment to entrepreneurial students within a broad range of engineering disciplines at the following universities: University of Waterloo, Ryerson University, McMaster University, and University of Windsor.Mr. Esch believed that education and entrepreneurship were pivotal for our nation’s prosperity, and that a prosperous community will have a deep and meaningful philanthropic impact. At University of Waterloo, the Norman Esch Entrepreneurial Challenge in Engineering Fund is investing $960,000 in Engineering Student Awards and Scholarships, with an opportunity for continuation. Th e fund has enabled University of Waterloo students to undertake Masters Degrees, start their own undergraduate businesses during co-op work terms, and has provided fi rst year students with training and work experience at startup companies. Driven by a passion to invest in Canada’s economic future and ability to compete on a global stage, Th e Esch Foundation has bridged the gap between education and industry, supporting bright young students within the Golden Horseshoe, and beyond, who are capable of creating economic diversifi cation.

Longo’s philanthropy represents a legacy of commitment and investment in the Golden Horseshoe area that began with the founders, Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo, who believed in giving something, even when they had nothing to give. Th e Longo Family has championed and supported Joseph Brant Hospital for over 30 years. Longo’s support of Joseph Brant Hospital is all encompassing as they sponsor their annual gala, support the purchase of new equipment, and recently made a signifi cant leadership gift in support of Joseph Brant’s capital campaign. In the spirit of philanthropy, Longo’s went one step further and challenged the community to support their local hospital by matching all community donations, dollar-for-dollar, up to $500,000. What makes Longo’s support of Joseph Brant Hospital truly special is Teresa Longo’s personal touch and connection to the hospital. Teresa visits the hospital’s complex-care patients during the holiday season and delivers holiday gift bags fi lled with comforting items like neck pillows, hand cream, books and more. Longo’s stores throughout the Golden Horseshoe also do their part, supporting various causes and events including the Amazing Bed Race and the Cops Care Valentine’s Dance. A true pillar in the Burlington community, Longo’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to the revitalized Joseph Brant Hospital and local charities in our region has inspired others to give back and support health and wellness. Communities are made better and stronger because of corporations like Longo’s.

Dr. Ronald P. Schlegel has spent most of his life giving back to his community – a trait he learned early from his Mennonite-pastor father, and which he has passed on to his three adult sons. Th rough this lifetime of generosity, Dr. Schlegel has changed the face of elder care in Canada, given new hope to individuals living with mental illness and addiction, and lent his business acumen and fi nancial strength to a wide variety of philanthropic projects, both at home and around the world. By carefully building philanthropy into every facet of his considerable business interests, Dr. Schlegel has taken the still-emerging role of “entrepreneurial philanthropist” to a new level of visionary philanthropy. Dr. Schlegel’s support of elder care research includes donations of more than $11.6 million to the University of Waterloo focused on supporting funding for research chairs, the Research Institute for Aging, various scholarships, capital campaigns, and research programs. He has also supported McMaster University, Conestoga College, and a wide-range of charitable organizations including the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Grand River Conservation Authority, Habitat for Humanity, and the United Way, to name just a few. Dr. Schlegel’s commitment to age-related research is extraordinary. You can already begin to see the impact of his giving in new research related to pain management, nutrition, falls protection and many other areas vital to health and wellbeing in aging populations. In addition, Dr. Schlegel’s down-to-earth investments in so many worthy causes in his home community have made Kitchener-Waterloo a better place to live, work, and grow.

Champion, ambassador, mentor, and philanthropist are all words that well describe this year’s Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy. For all of her 17 years, Jessica has faced health-related challenges. From a diagnosis at birth of patent ductus arteriosus, which signifi cantly aff ects blood fl ow, to a mysterious illness that nearly took Jessica’s life when she was 11, to a more recent diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, Jessica is well aware of the critical role health care institutions play throughout our community. Inspired by the care she received and her desire to help others, Jessica became a true ambassador for Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation and Th e Children’s Miracle Network. Th rough social media campaigns, donor stewardship events, and her own online advocacy group, FATE, Jessica is not only helping raise philanthropic funds, but she is supporting, inspiring, and advocating for other youth who are facing isolation and adversity and are struggling with physical, mental, sexual, and self-image issues related to their health challenges. Jessica epitomizes the spirit of youth in philanthropy and is a remarkable example of what it means to excel in the face of adversity and to give back.
