Ashford is a medieval castle hotel set on a c. 365 acre estate on the shores of lough

Corrib and the river Cong. It dates back to 1228 when it was built as a family

residence for the de Burgo family. It was a Guinness family home from 1855 to

1939, when it first became a luxury hotel. In 1970, Ashford Castle was acquired and

developed by the well known Irish Amercian, John A. Mulcahy.

original charm and grand old elegance. In 1951, the film director John ford used the

grounds of Ashford Castle as the backdrop for much of the movie, the Quiet Man,
