FAA VoIP Interoperability Event

• Took place from 16 to 25 May 2011 at Sheraton Crystal City Hotel- Arlington, Virginia

• Has brought together system experts working for companies operating in the aeronautical voice communication field;

• Their objective has been to test interoperability over a Local Area Network between Voice over IP interfaces integrated within the next generation of Voice Communication System, Radio, Voice Recorder and Radio gateway equipment, developed by market players to a common specification (ED docs + FAA addendums)

• This event supports the eventual deployment of the VoIP capable equipment within an Air Traffic management environment.

Reflections on the Event

• There was active involvement by all Vendors in build-up to FAA VoIP-IE with Website, Email Reflector and 4 Teleconferences.– Thanks to all participants for all the valuable contributions

especially for feedback to ED137 documents, FAA addendums and Test specifications

• Involvement of all players during Test selection process– Test cases based on FAA addendum specifications while others

were extracted from EUROCONTROL Test specifications.– Proposed test case document with high level descriptions made

it easier to agree on which tests should be implemented for the Event.

• A Daily Points of day session was organised to identify and discuss problems and monitor progress being made.

• Demo sessions allowed each vendor to present their products to the FAA and ANSP observers;

FAA VoIP Interoperability Event Summary ReportICAO WG-I/14 – July 18-20, 2011

FAA VoIP IE Conclusions

• The event has shown that interoperability problems have been identified and many have been resolved during the vent.

• The event has identified the weak points in Specifications and test specifications;

• Overall high percentages of interoperability achieved during the test sessions at this event has been excellent;

• This demonstrates a very high level of confidence by all participating vendors in the standards being used.

• The feedback from this event to the standards and addendums will now being used to correct those last few percent of non-interoperability.

• Huge progress has been demonstrated for the Recorder interoperability for this first event that includes recorder vendors.

• The FAA will distribute FAA VoIP IE final report in August 2011.
