Director’s Note:
I’m used to working with what we call “the littles”. The age group that would
NEVER leave class without squishing me in a group hug full of giggles, snot,
kisses, and usually someone crying and saying “Ouch!” As you can imagine, ages
12-17 operate a bit differently. Of course, the first two weeks I did make them give
me their choice of a high five or a hug before we ended each day - just to make the
adjustment a little easier for me. ;)
And of course, the big kids come with perks. For example, they (usually) do what I
ask the first time. I don’t get blank looks after explaining something and have to
follow up with “Do you know what _____ means?” There are other perks I didn’t
anticipate. They can lift heavy set pieces and chairs. I’m not the one in the room
with the most knowledge of the technology. We have more common interests, and I
can see more clearly the progression of what kinds of people they will develop
into.
I can also see how their talents have already begun developing as they have
worked and trained. Gwen Oliver is an incredibly well-rounded performer. William
Scott came out of the woodworks with his vocal performance and dancing ability.
McKenzie Rudolph has the PERFECT “Follies girl” voice. Sophie Ramsey has such
discipline in her actions and her focus on stage. We knew walking out of auditions
that no one could beat out Corbin Wright for “Lank.”
Last week, I had a conversation with the students about detail. The details in a
show are what make it great, and they take as long as the basics like blocking,
choreography, and music. I shared with them that my goal in this isn’t to produce a
great show, but to produce great performers who then are capable of a great show.
Then the camp continued, and I continued to get to know these kids more.
Gwen reached out to invite others to join their dance party when they were sitting by
themselves. William was complimented by every teacher throughout camp for how
willingly he applied critique given to him. McKenzie was the brave first to crack a
joke after each time I had to bring down the hammer. Sophie somehow knew as
soon as anyone would think to ask the same question I’d just answered five times,
and would intercept them with an answer so I could continue with tech rehearsal.
And each time I mention something that increases a person’s character, I notice
Corbin applying it every chance he gets. If I didn’t mention your kid by name, come
find me. I promise I have a story for them, too.
It’s the details that make these kids great, and in turn make a great Young Artist
Theatre intensive. They have made this experience unique, fun, and memorable for me
and each other. I am just so lucky to have been a part of it.
With a high five or a hug,
Elea

A Heart for the Arts
Dear FOA Friends and Family,
Please go vote on September 10th for the 1 cent sales tax with a sunset
clause after 12 years. It is an opportunity for The Foundation of Arts
and other organizations to receive funds that we can leverage toward
new and renovated facilities. While I am almost never in favor of
higher taxes, this particular instance is local, enabling face to face
accountability with responsible officials, and planned in a way that
requires more than one officer making crucial decisions with regard
to how the money is spent. If there is a healthy way for a tax to be
imposed, this would be it. And it gives the FOA hope for a better
facility, which has been a long time coming.
Over a decade has gone by with committees formed and dissolved,
groups dreaming and planning, research on grants, and
fundraising campaigns - all without that seed money required to
truly begin a tangible work. This is our hope and potentially the
answer to so many questions about Why? And When? that have been
posed over the years.
Our community outside the FOA family have begun to notice what we
are doing and how many people we are able to touch. I’m thankful for
this family because you understand the life-changing benefits of
practice in the arts. And using the facilities we have been blessed with
has shown us and our community the amazing things we can do
with little. But now we have the opportunity to see what we can do
with a little more. Let’s see what we can do together.
Thank you for supporting these kids as they learn all the things they
can do through the arts.
Enjoy the show!
With a Heart for the Arts,
Kristi

• Believe that engaging in the arts grows people and unites community
• Help people, and each other, learn discipline, teamwork, creativity, and focus through arts experiences - which arms them for success in any field
• Provide disciplined creative arts study and experiences trying our
best to enable everyone to learn, regardless of their ability to pay
• Are a place for children and adults to participate in goal-oriented arts-study, in a non-competitive and technique-based environment
• Serve at least 500 families per week through arts education, theatre,
and outreach activities
• Offer community theatre with ten different productions per year including The Nutcracker Ballet, musical theatre, and children’s theatre
• Stand alone as an arts organization in Northeast Arkansas that
provides live theatre at relatively low ticket prices for thousands of patrons each year—and a Pay What You Can performance for each show so that everyone can grow from live theatre
• Work with adults and children with disabilities through the arts, allowing them the opportunity to perform annually on stage
• Bring an annual count of 55,000 trips into downtown Jonesboro for
our community
• Need your support—ticket sales and class tuition support only about half of what it takes to serve Northeast Arkansas and the more than 20,000 people we positively affect annually
