BRADLEY HUNTER WELCH Concert Organist

“To invoke an old Southern expression, Bradley Hunter Welch plays the organ like nobody’s business.

Between the virtuosity of the playing and the easy going spoken commentary, he also proved that ‘entertainer’ and ‘organist’ needn't be mutually exclusive. It would be hard to play Widor any better

than this....splendidly idiomatic and communicative.” (Dallas Morning News)

Hailed as “A world-class virtuoso” (The American Organist) and “an expert at defining darks, lights, shadows and colors,” (Birmingham News, Alabama) Bradley Hunter Welch is increasingly in demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and collaborative artist. He is the 2003 First Place winner of the Dallas International Organ Competition and was also awarded the Audience Prize for the second time, having previously won it in 2000. He has been a featured artist at three conventions of the American Guild of Organists, and made his European debut in France performing in the Chartres Organ Festival. He has appeared as soloist with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. With the DSO, he gave the world premiere of Stephen Paulus’ Grand Concerto for Organ and Orchestra, the piece written for Bradley as the winner of the Dallas International Organ Competition. In August 2018, Bradley Hunter Welch was named Resident Organist and holder of the Lay Family Chair by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where he’ll perform with the DSO and oversee the Meyerson Symphony Center’s Lay Family Concert Organ, built by C.B. Fisk. He also devotes his attention to a thriving solo concert career and work as Artist-in-Residence at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Dr. Welch has taught at Southern Methodist University and Baylor University. He was Director of Music & Arts at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX from 2009-2014. A native of Knoxville, TN, Bradley holds the Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Musical Arts, and Master of Music degrees, as well as the coveted Artist Diploma from Yale University where he studied with Thomas Murray and Martin Jean. He also holds the Bachelor of Music degree magna cum laude from Baylor University where he studied with Joyce Jones. Dr. Welch continues his study of organ and piano technique with Sheila Paige. His debut CD recording is the very first solo organ recording made on the Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn Organ, built by Casavant, at Broadway Baptist Church, Fort Worth, made on the Loft Recordings label. In 2016 he released a CD, entitled “Dynamic Duo”, of large-scale orchestral transcriptions with duo-organist Ken Cowan on the Pro Organo label. Bradley Hunter Welch is represented in North American exclusively by Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, LLC.

The Gibbs-Preyer Sanctuary Organ The Sanctuary Organ is a distinctive instrument built by the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio. Given by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin J. Gibbs and Mrs. Frederick W. Preyer in memory of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Gibbs, the organ was built in 1952 as a major phase of Christ Church’s renovation and expansion program. The brief association of E. M. Skinner with the Schantz Company witnessed the installation of the instrument. The tonal design of John Schantz and Mr. Skinner brought about several unique features. Unusually broad-scaled principals in the great and pedal division laid the foundation for a wonderfully rich and sonorous tone. The solo division was noteworthy due to the large-scaled viola and celeste, as well as the doppelflöte and lovely vox humana. Over the years, under the supervision of various organists of the church’s rich musical tradition, subtle tonal revisions have been made, based on popular trends in organ voicing, especially regarding the principal choruses and mixtures. In 1996, a tonal rebuild and enlargement of the Sanctuary Organ sought to bring about a return to the original American Classic tonal design of 1952. A noteworthy addition to the instrument was the Elsass Memorial Trompette en Chamade, given by the Russell Elsass family in memory of beloved wife and mother, Anne Elsass (who served as dean of the Canton chapter of the American Guild of Organists). The stop is afforded a commanding position high on the front wall of the chancel. Other noteworthy additions included the Tuba Mirabilis, a heroic English-style solo reed under expression in the solo division, the Harmonic Flute, the 32’ Contra Posaune, and the Zymbelstern. The original instrument of 1952 contained 59 ranks. Now, the organ is comprised of five divisions with a total of 72 ranks (58 stops). From 1996-2003, the Schantz Organ Company executed a re-leathering and chest rebuilding of each division of the organ—Choir, Solo, Great, Pedal, and finally Swell. This process fortuitously prepared all the sound-producing components of the organ located in the two large double-story pipe chambers to allow for the final phase of this long-term renovation: the new console. Most recently, in the summer of 2008, the Schantz Organ Company built a completely new four-manual console with solid-state digital components. With greatly expanded devices for more flexible and creative use of the organ, there are now 105 drawknobs, 31 tilting coupler tabs, 63 thumb pistons, 31 toe studs, 256 levels of digital memory, with MIDI-control technology. The console is moveable to any location on the main chancel level, allowing full view of the performers at our organ concerts.
