Due to an extremely positive response to the inaugural Open House Bendigo in October 2018, we are excited to be back in 2019 and to also announce our return in 2020.

We were buoyed by how the City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigonians embraced the event, as not only a celebration of architecture and the city, but also as a vehicle to think and speak about the future of their city through its built environment. We look forward to continuing a meaningful partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo, one that we hope will have a lasting impact on the city.

This year, we have 27 buildings opening their doors, with 12 new to program and five special residential architecture tours. Our open-access model will allow people to experience Bendigo through a design lens, from the outstanding private homes including Kooroork House II by e+ Architecture, significant heritage redevelopments including the Mining Exchange Building and architecture tours by Y2 of Ulumbarra Theatre, through to landscape architecture tours by Oculus of the Bendigo Hospital development. We also have a number of special events and a full day of talks and screenings at the La Trobe Art Institute.

THE CITY OF GREATER BENDIGO IS AGAIN PROUD TO SUPPORT THE OPEN HOUSE BENDIGO EVENT.

As Mayor, I often hear residents and visitors to Bendigo comment on our incredible buildings, so this weekend is a great opportunity to satisfy our curiosity and take a look inside some of our most beautiful and iconic buildings.

Open House Bendigo is a celebration of both our heritage and striking modern architecture, and is a way for us all to further appreciate the buildings that feature on our streetscape.

I am delighted this year’s event has expanded to include buildings in Eaglehawk and Castlemaine, as our wider city and region are rich in examples of great architecture.

Open House Bendigo also reminds us about the liveability of our city, and how buildings create a sense of place and pride in where we live.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful, free opportunity to learn more about our magnificent buildings and celebrate both our past and present.

MARGARET O’ROURKECr Margaret O’Rourke City of Greater Bendigo Mayor

The Open House Weekend is built on generosity: the generosity of the building custodians, homeowners, volunteers, partners, and of the visitors.

We could not be in Bendigo without the generous support of the City of Greater Bendigo. The Weekend is also supported by Creative Victoria, Department for Land, Environment, Water and Planning, the Heritage Council of Victoria, and in-kind partners La Trobe Art Institute, Efront, Coleby Consulting, Zilla & Brook Publicity and GoGet.

Thank you to our architects and building hosts for contributing to what has shaped upped to be another rich and full program.

I would like to take a moment to thank Victoria Bennett and Brianna Carroll, the hard-working Open House team who have put together the 2019 program.

We do hope to see you out and about on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October.

Recently returned to its former glory after extensive works by builder DBG Projects and Williams Boag Architects. Similar in style to Melbourne’s Royal Arcade and by the same designer Charles Webb, the Beehive was once a hotel, a mining exchange, a restaurant, office and function space. The current development uncovers the rich layers of use by removing most of, if not all of the 1920s’ and 1950s’ changes, revealing key features of the original building.

    SOLDIERS MEMORIAL INSTITUTE

GREEN ROOFS, DJA DJA WURRUNG AND CHINESE GARDENS REFLECT THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY OF THE REGION.

BENDIGO HOSPITAL LANDSCAPE TOURLANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: OCULUS, WITH PAUL THOMPSON 2017ARCHITECT: SILVER THOMAS HANLEY & BATES SMART 2017

The Bendigo Hospital, the largest regional hospital development in Victoria, delivers world-class healthcare facilities and provides a welcoming, holistic and positive environment that promotes wellbeing.

The winner of many awards including the 2019 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Award of Excellence for Civic Architecture, 2018 Australian Institute of Architects (National) Sir Zelman Cowen award for Public Architecture and 2017 Premiers Sustainability Regional Recognition Award, the new Bendigo Hospital was undertaken by Exemplar Health as Private Public Partnership with the Victorian Government.

The hospital is a significant civic building that considers the needs of patients, staff and the community and offers a tranquil and caring environment through the integration of architecture, landscaping, health planning and evidence-based design. Landscaped courtyards, green roofs, Dja Dja Wurrung and Chinese gardens reflect the cultural diversity of the regions history, and views towards the landscape characterise the design.

The building’s design team collaborated from the outset with landscape architects OCULUS (with Paul Thompson). Central to the landscape architectural approach was the idea of connections and kindness; providing legible connectivity within the precinct and to the city through a diversity of landscape spaces from community to collaborative and private spaces.

WHAT’S ONPre-booked tours led by Oculus landscape architects will visit the landscaped therapeutic gardens and a selection of internal courtyard spaces.

    ULUMBARRA THEATRE

MERGING CONTEMPORARY DESIGN WITH THE HERITAGE PENITENTIARY ARCHITECTURE.

    1863, Y2 ARCHITECTURE + SCHULER SHOOK 2015

Meaning ‘gather together’ or ‘meeting place’ in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, Ulumbarra blends heritage and modern elements beautifully, offering distinctive state-of-the-art performance and event spaces. The Sandhurst Gaol–now the site of Ulumbarra Theatre–originally opened in 1863 and was decommissioned in 2006. Former inmates include Chopper Read and Ronald Ryan. The original design, with passages radiating from a central hub, was based upon the much publicised Pentonville concept, which enabled the surveillance of multiple wings from a central point whilst allowing a reasonable amount of air to circulate the cellblocks.

The renovation by Melbourne/Bendigo architects Y2 and international theatre design specialists Schuler Shook, merges contemporary design with the heritage elements of the old penitentiary architecture. With an auditorium capacity of 951, expansive foyers, studios and meeting rooms, Ulumbarra Theatre’s architects have cleverly adapted this historic gaol to create an extraordinary arts and community facility. Ulumbarra’s main stage–the largest in regional Australia–can accommodate many diverse performances or touring companies with a fully-functional fly tower and world-class production capabilities.

BENDIGO CHAPELUnique in its Gothic Revival style, the chapel is built from Harcourt granite. The building is designed in a distinctive cross shape, with the main entrance facing the east, and side exit doors facing the north and south. Other unique features include its bell flèche adorned with a golden finial, taking pride of place atop the chapel. Historically the building was used as a space to conduct funeral services, with coffins placed on trestles such as those on display inside. With no electric lighting, the sunlight filtering through stained-glass windows provides a unique light within the space.

Updated by W.C Vahland the Town Hall interiors feature decorative plaster adorned with 22-carat-gold leaf, reflecting the stories of a city built on gold. In 2003, the Hall returned to the elegance and beauty of its 19th century heritage after an extensive restoration.

MINERS’ COTTAGEOne of the main drivers for the owner/architect in developing the site was the view to this being their ‘forever’ house, rather than a stepping stone to something bigger and ‘better’. Stage 1 involved the basic renovation of the interior, ensuring the ‘bones’ were in good health. More recently, Stage 2 has been completed. This involved reconfiguration of internal spaces and a modest extension providing more living space, improved connection to the garden and improved natural light.

When local architect, Lucas Hodgens, went to sell his home that he designed and built for his young family in 2013 the real estate agent suggested this home would be too difficult to market and sell. “What is it? How many bedrooms and living spaces does it have? Where’s the media room? This is not a family home!” The realisation that he had succeeded in his goal of flipping the status quo was confirmed.

Why do we have a preconceived idea of what makes a family home in size, scale, and functional areas? Why do our mass-produced homes in Victoria still seemingly respond to the environmental context of our European ancestry? These were the challenges faced with the design of this project. With an opportunity to design and build his own home, the architect decided to embark on an exploration into how to better respond to these questions.

As a result, the home remains unlike any other, with its simplicity, modest budget, and bush setting making it a standout and a 2012 Houses Awards finalist. With a simple program of a central open plan living/dining/kitchen and a series of four pods providing the necessary sleeping, washing and retreat space,s the home mimics the notion of a campsite, a social house with the ability to connect strongly with its surrounds.

This intriguing heritage building began its life as a Methodist church in 1869, was converted into a school in 1885 and was refurbished as a Masonic Hall in 1925.
