Read an extract from a novel ‘Starry nights’
Before you read:
1. Where do you think the story takes place? Look at
the pictures for hints.
Starry nights
Lulama loved that special time of day when
the sun faded and the stars started to twinkle.
When the sky was crisp and clear, Lulama
would stand at her bedroom window and gaze
up at the little sparkly fireflies. On off, on off,
they flashed - it seemed almost as if they were
sending secret messages to one another.
That night, before she climbed into bed, she
went to the window for one last look.
It was then that she saw it - the large black
shape that swooped down from the trees, and
was gone, almost as quickly as it had come.
Then it came again, this time with a great
swishing sound.
“Swish, swish, swisssh. Swisssh, Swisssh,
Swisssh.”
“Mom,” she whimpered, from under her
duvet. “There’s something creepy outside my
window.”
“I’m sure it’s nothing, Lulama,” her mother said,
as she peeked through the curtains to see.
She saw it too - the shape that darted across
the courtyard.
“Oh Luluma, it’s simply the shadow of the
trees and the rustling of the leaves in the
breeze,” her mother reassured her.
Don t be scared. Go to sleep now and dream
of happy things.”

Write a diary
Step 1: Plan
Plan what you are going to write about.
Step 2 : Draft
Write a rough draft of your diary entries in which you write down your
main thoughts. Aim to write about 50 words.
Give your draft to someone else to read.
Step 3: Refine
Edit your writing to check for errors. Use feedback about your rough
draft.
Keep a diary for a week. Each day write something different. Write
anything that you like. A diary is your own special tool to help you
record your memories and feelings.
Before you write : Read an example of a diary kept by a grade 4 learner.
Dear Diary ( Start off like this)
January 11 , 2019 (write the date)
I am going to a new school (Topic sentence). I (first person narration) am excited about it but at the same time I feel very
scared. What will the other Kids think of me? (supporting sentences) I will also miss my Grade 3 friends - Thabo and Jane
and Yaseen.
We have been friends since Grade R! Anyway time to sleep now so that I can get up bright and early.

I just got home from school. It was terrifying. I am usually chatty but the cat must have got my tongue. I couldn't think of
anything to say to people. Everyone was so unfriendly. I should have stayed at my old school. Why did Mom and Dad
make me change schools? This was the worst day of my life.( emotive language)

Today was a gas! (informal style) I made a new friend called Leya. Even though she is a girl, I think we could be best friends.
We sat together at breaktime to eat our sandwiches. I also tried out for the soccer team The teacher, Mr Monde, said he was
impressed with my kicking skills. He called me Benni! He said I was a star player. Life’s great at the moment!
