The original Eclipse was known for being a rocket on the road. Despite the swoopy and aggressive styling, the Eclipse is no longer the fastest car in the Mitsubishi lineup. That title belongs to the frumpy Lancer Evolution. The Eclipse looks the part of a sports coupe with racy lines and a hot palette of colors. Two models are offered: the GS which is powered by a 162 hp 4-cylinder and the GT which is powered by Mitsubishi's 260hp 3.8L V6. The most interesting model of the line, is the GT with the 6-speed manual transmission and 18 inch wheels. If only some of the Evolution could find its way in to the Eclipse.

Mitsubishi Eclipse 2006

Inside, the Eclipse is equally responsive. The interior envelops the driver. The seats cradle. A motorcycle-inspired gauge cluster informs. And the optional Rockford Fosgate® audio system bumps, with 650 watts (max.), a 6-CD/MP3-compatible in-dash changer and nine speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer. The GT's available premium-sport package includes the Rockford Fosgate® audio system and also gives the most discerning Eclipse buyers even more performance and style, with 18-inch seven-spoke alloy rims, leather seats, a power sunroof, alloy pedals and more.

Eclipse

The Eclipse GT's 3.8-liter MIVEC engine is a mechanical masterpiece. At low revolutions the motor's 260 lb-ft of torque give the Eclipse stoplight authority, while at higher revs variable valve timing provides pure top-end power. A six-speed manual or a five-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission puts power to pavement. To keep it there, increased chassis and body rigidity lend composure at any speed. The performance-tuned suspension with McPherson struts in the front and a low-mounted multilink rear give the new Eclipse the sharp, precise handling to master any road.

With its 2.4-liter MIVEC power plant, the Eclipse GS also delivers ample performance. With a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed Sportronic® transmission and a considerable array of standard features, the GS offers unique personal luxury at an affordable price.

With its powerful V8 and nondescript styling, the previous M45 was a sleeper. Unfortunately, the styling was a little too drab for American tastes. The new M should easily avoid this problem. With its aggressive styling and a V6 model, the M broadens its appeal. The second generation M rides on a longer and updated version of the RWD FM platform from the G35 and FX35/45. The range includes the 275hp M35, M35 Sport and M35 AWD V6 models and the 340hp M45 and M45 Sport V8 models. All are equipped with a five-speed automatic and stability control. The M features many common luxury touches but also offers rare optional features like a backup camera and a lane-departure system. Sport models feature a motor-actuated active steering system that changes the rear suspension geometry to augment handling. Infiniti's M is well-styled, well-powered and well-equipped to do battle in a robust market segment.
