Life SkillsWarm-Up

Welcome, class!

Point to your name tag, with sides of fingers touching, and say:

My name is [your first and last name].

Move about at a lively pace, shaking hands with each student and

making each one feel special.

Say:

Hello. My name is [your first and last name].

After greeting each student, tell the class:

In the United States, people often shake hands

with greetings and introductions. They often

greet with a smile and a wave. (Demonstrate these

actions as you say these words.)

Ask students to show you the way people shake hands and greet each other in their culture.

Presentation #1: The AlphabetPoint to the names on your name tag as you say:To write our names, we use the letters of thealphabet. These letters have names, too. Let’s say the letter names of the English alphabet. We need to know how to say them when someone asks us to spell our name.

Guided Practice #1: The Alphabet

1. (Circle Repetition) Conduct a lively repetition of thealphabet (similar to having students “number off”).Challenge more advanced students to increase speed as much as possible. For several “rounds,” add interest by beginning with a different student each time. This requires students to do more thinking in English.

2. (Fill-in-the-Blank) Distribute Handout #1: Alphabet.Demonstrate what you want students to do. When students have completed this activity, ask that they read their alphabets to a partner and compare their answers in the “before/after” practice at the bottom of the page.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star…

Optional activities for additional practice, as needed:

(1) Ask students to arrange themselves in alphabetical order to

say their first names, then their last names.

(2) Enjoy singing the “Alphabet Song” to the tune of “Twinkle,

Twinkle Little Star”:

A-B-C-D E-F-G

H-I-J-K LMNOP

Q-R-S — T-U-V — W-X — Y and Z

Now I’ve said my ABC’s!

Next time won’t you sing with me?

Communicative Practice #1 and #2:

Alphabet and First/Last Names

(Interview/Survey) Distribute

Handout #2: Class Survey and lead repetition of the survey questions.

Demonstrate what you want students to do—or ask two of the more proficient students to demonstrate instead:

(1) Walk about the room, shaking hands with each student, saying, “Hello. My name is ____.”

(2) After greeting and shaking hands, ask the survey questions. (What is your first name? How do you spell it? Is that _ _ _ _ ? etc.)

(3) Write the answers on the survey sheet.

Presentation #3: Family Relationships

Show pictures to introduce each member of your family.

If your pictures do not depict mother, father, wife, husband, daughter, son, sister, brother and cousin, use a magazine picture to introduce these words.

Life ApplicationStudent Study Guide Section G

1. The names for Jesus have important meanings: “He will save His people from their sins.” (Matt. 1:21) “God with us.” (Matt. 1:23)

Your students may have names with special meanings. In pairs or small groups ask students to tell the story and/or the meaning of their names. Provide an example with information about the selection process and/or the meaning your own name or the name of someone you know. Write the following questions on the board, but let students know that is O.K., if they do not know the answers to these questions: Who chose your name?

What does it mean?

2. Mary wants to share her “good news” with her cousin Elizabeth. Do you remember having “good news” to share?

Tell your partner (or small group) about this good news.

3. Ask for volunteers to tell the story in their own words. If students need help, show the film clip with the sound muted; ask students to narrate what they see.

1. God knows our names and everything about us. “. . . our names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20 New Life Version).

“God knows how many hairs you have on your head” (Matthew 10:30 NLV).

2. When we give ourselves to God, God writes our names in the Book of Life. “Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will be in the city (in heaven)” (Revelation 21:27 Contemporary English Version).

3. God made each of us to be His child—to be in the family of God!

“He gave the right and the power to become children of God to those who received Him. He gave this to those who put their trust in His name. These children of God were not born of blood and of flesh and of man’s desires, but they were born of God” (John 1:12-13 NLV).
