• A popular photographer at the time was Matthew Brady.

• Brady took pictures of battlefields, camps, soldiers, and war generals.

Alexander Gardner

• Alexander Gardner was another famous photographer in the Civil War.

• Gardner worked frequently with Matthew Brady.• He photographed the Army of the Potomac, The

Battle of Culpepper, and the Second Battle of Bull Run.

• In 1863, Gardner published The Catalogue of Photographic Incidents of the Civil War, which contained all of the photographs he had taken.

Union Music

• Union soldiers preferred to listen and sing to patriotic and sentimental songs.

• Favorite songs among the soldiers included The Battle Cry of Freedom, John Brown’s Body, Just Before the Battle Mother, The Vacant Chair, and Dixie’s Land.

Confederate Music

• Confederate soldiers enjoyed listening and singing to patriotic and romantic music.

Literature

• Books and newspapers had a strong impact on the lives of people during the Civil War.

• For example, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, revealed how horribly slaves were treated by their masters. The book turned many people against slavery.

Harper’s Weekly

• Harper’s Weekly was a very popular and powerful newspaper during the Civil War.

• The newspaper contained articles about recent battles, deaths of soldiers, and many pictures of battlefields and soldiers.
