MODERN REPRESENTATION OF YOUTH ON TV

One example of youth represented negatively on television is the TV show Waterloo Road. This is based in a school and follows the lives of different students and how the students overcome different obstacles. This is a negative representation of youth as some of the students are misbehaved, this may challenge the true representation of youth. This modern representation of youth maybe different to those shown on TV in the past. Another example of youth represented negatively on television is a TV show Misfits which follows five young offenders who are sent to work in a community service programme, where they obtain supernatural powers after a strange electrical storm. This shows the negative representation of youth because they have to work together to do different tasks and sometimes they complain about doing some work, this may suggest that youngsters are lazy and complain all lot.

MODERN REPRESENTATION OF YOUTH ON TV

Age is represented in the inbetweeners series. This is because the four main characters are 14-18 year olds, and throughout the series highlights the general stereotype for boys of that age. For example their hormonal behaviour throughout the series, mischievous behaviour and binge drinking. They are put in situations throughout the series which would usually be stressful if you are in the situation but they make it funny and create humour to the audience.

The setting of the inbetweeners is in a upper class area in the suburbs of London. For some reason this creates humour for the audience as the situations they get themselves in usually would occur in a more deprived area of London. Therefore they act confused and inexperienced in certain situations.

REPRESENTATION IN THE PAST

Young Apprentice – Started in 2010 – Positive

They are successful young apprentices who own their own businesses and compete with 16 other candidates to win a place to be Lord Alan Sugar’s business partner. It shows that they are dedicated to work hard and as part of team doing the task set by Sugar to win the place. They also give up a lot to go on the show which shows ambition.

The hills – Started in 2006: Negative

In this show there is a negative representation of youth as it shows young girls always in relationships and have problems with friends, this suggests that some groups of friends have conflicts, this shows youth to be negative. This show also shows their spoilt lifestyle and how their attitude is different from a normal person. One of the characters wanted to be a party planner but found it boring and dropped out, which shows that she is like us as we change our minds as too.
