At the same time, Sojourner Truth appears at a polling booth in Grand Rapids, Michigan, demanding a ballot; she is turned away . 1876-1879 Belva Ann Lockwood , a lawyer , is denied permission to practice before the Supreme Court. In 1879, after three years of pushing legislation, women are granted permission to practice in court, with Lockwood becoming the first. picketing of the White House, and parades as women continue their public
