The Acropolis, located on a high rocky outcrop, dominates the city of Athens. There lies the Parthenon, the most famous monument of Ancient Greek civilization. It was constructed in the 5th century BC, “The Golden Age” of Ancient Greece. A temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.

In 2009, the new Parthenon Museum, one of the biggest cultural projects in Europe, was opened to the public.

The Olympic Games began in Ancient Olympia in approximately 776 BC. They were held every 4 years .The Olympic Games and athletes were greatly respected by the ancient world.

The Games revived in 1896. They are held in a different country every 4 years. Greece had the honour of organising the Olympic Games in 2004.

Ancient dramaAncient Greek Drama, which was in fact poetry intended for theatrical performances, was created in Athens in the 6th century BC. Its aim was to educate the audience. As Athens was a democracy at the time, it was decided that all Athenians should see the performances so that they would become better citizens.

Maria Callas was one of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century.

Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hatzidakis are very important greek composers

Music

Homer was the greatest ancient Greek epic poet.

Giorgos Seferis and Odysseas Elytis were awarded with the Nobel Prize for literature.

The works of the poet Konstantinos Kavafis and the author Nikos Kazantzakis have been translated into many languages.

Involved in shipping, trade and fisheries, Greece is one of the strongest and most important maritime nations of the world.

For years, the Greek-owned fleet occupies a leading position worldwide.

Greece has approximately 3.500 islands, countless beaches which attract many people from all over the world providing a regular income to traders of our country.

AITOLOAKARNANIAThe area of Aitoloakarnania belongs to the region of Western GreeceIts capital is Mesolongi

The communication of remote areas with urban centres has become easier, faster and safer.

The bridge of Rio - Antirio (Charilaos Trikoupis) connects Aitoloakarnania with Peloponese. It was built in 2004 and has a length of 2400m. Moreover, it is the biggest cabled bridge in the world. It is a technological achievement.

Acheloos is one of the longest rivers in Greece. It is a water resource for many cities and villages

Our region is known for its wonderful coastline (south and west). It’ s also known for the river Acheloos, five natural lakes, and three artificial ones.

the ancient years.

Well-organised cities had been built next to the sea, the rivers and the lakes. Temples, theatres, aqueducts and ancient parliaments were escavated....

Panaitolio is a semi-rural community with 5.000 inhabitants. It has two primary schools, one junior high school and one high school, some cultural and sports clubs and one environmental Center.

Lake Trichonida

Lake Trichonida is the biggest lake in Greece and the locals depend on it, both on environmental and economical levels. Its length is 97 km2 and its depth is 58m. The lake is supplied with water from underground sources and 15 torrents, which come from the mountains around, Panaitoliko and Arakinthos. Many species of fish live in it. 350 tons are fished each year.
