Research Group
• Department of Architecture, Building and Planning (ABP)
• Unit Building Physics and Systems (BPS)
• The built environment
• consumes ~30-40% world primary energy use
• is where we spend ~90% of our time (i.e indoors)
• combines a complex system of requirements

Background
• Research is a part of Annex 54 from the IEA− Integration of Micro-Generation and Related Energy Technologies in Buildings”
• The Netherlands, Eindhoven participates in 54 subtask B− Use simulations to develop an extensive library of performance studies and
synthesis techniques to identify generic performance trends and “rules of thumb” regarding the appropriate deployment of micro-generation technologies.

Research question
• “How to develop a design concept which ensures the comfort of the occupants, and has an optimized (system) performance of an energy system with 100% renewable micro-generation technologies which has to satisfy the electrical and thermal energy demand, for an off-grid campground at Texel, in the Netherlands?”

Planning
• Finish TRNSYS model (generation, storage, balance)
• Think of optimization techniques
• Use MODEfrontier for optimization
• Perform sensitivity analysis on results
• Do the same for 3 other campsites

Advice
• Ask your professor for some possibilities of research topics in the research group.
• Try to make your internship and graduation work to match.
• Company: start with the contractual issues on time, otherwise it can slow down your progress enormously.
• Research group: Make sure you have a daily PhD supervisor and not only a professor.
• Make sure you know the vacation schedules of your professor and other supervisors.
