HVDC Plus – voltage sourced converters (VSC) in modular multilevel
converter configuration (MMC)
Independent control of active and reactive
power
Supply of passive networks,
system recovery and black start capability
High dynamic performance
Low space requirements
Bulk power transmission over long
distances with low losses
Interconnection of asynchronous
grids/different frequencies
Energy flux control
No need for reactive power compensation
along the line

HVDC technology at transnational electrical interconnections
Energy exchange between two countries possible.
Lower investment costs due to smaller number of
conductors and simpler structures, no filters.
Connection of unsynchronized grids possible.
Continuously reactive power regulation.
Black start capability for Spanish or French power
grid possible.
Power reversal possible in 150 ms.

HVDC technology doubles energy exchange between France and Spain
The Siemens HVDC system which has been employed at the power link between France and Spain
is recently the most powerful HVDC transmission system worldwide based on voltage sourced converter
technology,
doubles capacity for exchanging electrical power between the two countries,
connects the Iberian peninsula with the European power grid,
increases the reliability of power supply and ensures that additional renewable energy sources can be
integrated without endangering the stability of the grid,
is an excellent model and a forward-looking approach which shows how bottlenecks in the transmission
grids throughout Europe can gradually be eliminated and
is a milestone on the road towards a single European energy market.
