*history*The festival was created in 1968 by the governor of Cesar Alfonso Lopez Michelsenthanks to the initiative of composer Rafael Escalona and cultural promoter  ConsueloAraújo Noguera. Gradually became an event of national and international importance,as well as a meeting point for the political class, art and culture of Colombia. From itsfounding until 2001, when she was appointed Minister of Culture, the festival (and thefoundation, created in 1986) was directed by Dona Consuelo Araújo Noguera. Currentlythe Executive Chairman

*of the Foundation is his son Rodolfo Molina Araujo.Since 1987, it was decided that every 10 years the Professional Vallenato Rey contestwould be replaced by the King of Kings, which can participate only previous winners.The Festival was held until 2003 at the Plaza Alfonso Lopez. Participants were presented on stage Francisco "The Man" in the same plaza. Since 2004, the Festival is held at the Park Vallenato Legend, complex cultural, musical and folklore built toaccommodate the ever growing crowd of spectators that the square was already unableto support. Participants compete on stage "compaies Chipuco" under the bandshell "Cachuca Bacana. "

*Rey Vallenato Aficionado - Competition between people who do not derive theireconomic livelihood of the practice of vallenato, but it is practiced by a mere hobby.

*Rey Vallenato Infantil - Competition among fans under 14.

*Rey Vallenato Unpublished Song - song yet recorded by any group, nor presented inany festival.

*Rey Vallenato the Piqueria - Competition between verseadores repentistas on themodalities of verses of five words tenth of a free theme and forced standing.

*Competition of Piloneras - Competition Piloneros groups, dancers dance in the categories Pilon children, youth and adults. Is the event which opens the Festival.
