DEFINITIONA phrasal verb consists of a verb and a preposition or adverb that modifies or changes the meaning "give up" is a phrasal

verb that means "stop doing" something, which is very different from "give". The word or words that modify a verb in

this manner can also go under the name particle

They are idiomatic expressions, combining verbs and propositions to make new verbs whose meaning is often not

obvious from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. They are widely used in both written and spoken English and new ones are formed all the time as they are a flexible way of

creating new terms.

VERB + ADVERB = PREPOSITION.

SEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS

The object may come after the following phrasal verbs or it may separate the two parts:

• You have to do this paint job over. • You have to do over this paint job.

When the object of the following phrasal verbs is a pronoun, the two parts of the phrasal verb must be separated:

• You have to do it over.

INSEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS (TRANSITIVE)

Inseparable phrasal verbs can be transitive (i.e. they can take a direct object), but they can’t have the direct object in the middle of the phrasal verb. Most of the time, this makes life a little easier for the new English writer as there aren’t as many variables or meanings to consider.

• My mother promised to look after my dog while I was gone.

• Carlos ran into his English professor in the hallway.

A phrasal verb can be a combination of three words. Three-word phrasal verbs are non-separable. These phrasal verbs are followed by the noun or pronoun. The three-word phrasal verb can be transitive, that is followed by an object, or intransitive that is not followed by an object.

• Peter cheated on the exam and then tried to get away with it.

• The teacher had to put up with a great deal of nonsense from the new students.
