North riverdale Block Festival 2014

KRVC — Building Community, One Block Party at a TimeSince 2010, KRVC has organized numerous festivals in the communities of Riverdale and Woodlawn. These festivals serve to enrich our community by bringing diverse groups, across all ages, races and religions, together.

Our goal is to create, build, and grow a vibrant, connected and engaged community for its residents and businesses by leveraging the universal power of live music, theater, street performers, original art, children’s activities and more.

Most of our festivals have been held on commercial corridors, engaged the local businesses, generated media attention and been attended by thousands of people. KRVC has partnered with the local Merchants Associations for some of our events, which have served to promote the local businesses on those blocks.

Our local elected officials, Community Board 8 and the 50th Police Precinct have also played instrumental roles in making these events, some of which have required the closure of major streets, possible.

KRVC’s goal is to revitalize our community, boost our businesses and create a unique cultural experience through these festivals. Our festivals are partially funded by a generous grant from the Bronx Council on the Arts and by many local business sponsors.

State Senator Klein has also sponsored our last several festivals and has allocated funding to KRVC so that we can purchase our own stage, sound equipment, tents, amusement rides and even a truck to transport the items to our events!

Brought to you by...Tracy McCabe Shelton As KRVC’s Executive Director, Tracy oversees all aspects of the festivals. She has extensive experience in the public interest and strong community ties and involvement.

Linda Manning, an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and actor produces the festivals’ music and entertainment. She also hosts a regular jazz series. www.LindasJazzNights.com.

Farrah Rubin secures the sponsorships for the festivals. After 20 years in the garment business, Farrah — a Riverdale native — took time off to dedicate to her kids, their school, and the community.

Shari Hall secures the permit and handles logistics for the festivals. As a Program Assistant Ms. Hall, a Kingsbridge native who now lives in Riverdale, manages KRVC’s day-to-day operations.

The Riverdale Rising Stars, the Riverdale Y’s renowned teen theater group, was founded by Laurie Walton. Now in its 12th season, it has mounted more than 35 productions. Under Laurie’s guidance

the Riverdale Rising Stars and Rising Stars Junior program have been the recipients of numerous national youth theatre awards. As a result of these quality productions, the Y has been honored to host the last three

east coast National Youth Theatre Awards ceremonies. Ms. Walton also received a 2009 NY State Assembly Award. Several of the Rising Stars have gone on to careers on stage and screen.

Great performers all afternoon longOn the main stage

Seeing Voices guiding lights, Suzanne and Richard Hockstein, have been writing and playing music in bars and clubs around New York for many years and for some rea-son still seem to like it. Their music has been described as blues tinged psychedelic rock or even Blondie meets the Yardbirds.

Bassist Steve Giordano started playing in Greenwich Village clubs in the late 70’s at

the tender age of 16. After several years of playing blues, folk, and 60’s rock tunes, he formed his own punk/new wave band.

The peripatetic musician played with numerous other bands and collaborated on three film soundtracks, one of which was featured at the Telluride film festival, another received multiple Emmy nominations.

Joe Guzzardo has been playing drums

with Seeing Voices for most of the 21st cen-tury. He is originally from the great but mys-terious boro of Queens where he learned to play drums in the attic of his ancestral home. Joe is fluent in rock, jazz, pop, latin and hip hop styles. He practices law by day and drums by night and lives in the wilds of Long Island with his gorgeous wife and three lovely and energetic female offspring.

Ben Paterson (Organ), Andrew Lim (Guitar) and Carmen Intorre (Drums)

Originally from Philadelphia, Ben Paterson spent his younger years studying both classi-cal and jazz music before moving to Chi-cago. There he absorbed the unique blend of Jazz and Blues that can only be found in the Windy City.

Now in New York, Ben is poised to bring

his unique talents to a wider audience. Guitarist Andrew Lim has been an inte-

gral part of the jazz scene in Singapore and abroad since 2001. He has performed at vari-ous venues including Lincoln Center, Smoke, Dizzy’s, Zinc Bar and various local clubs.

Born in Buffalo, NY, Carmen Intorre be-gan playing drums at age five. A graduate of The Institute for Jazz Studies at the Juilliard

School, he has performed and recorded with numerous musicians.

A 2011 Grammy nominee for his perfor-mance on the critically acclaimed album by Joey DeFrancesco entitled Never Can Say Goodbye: The Music of Michael Jackson, Intorre also performed alongside DeFran-cesco and Dr. Lonnie Smith on the PBS show Legends of Jazz, hosted by Ramsey Lewis.

New York Brogue — Danny Flinn, Matt Stapleton, Calum Pasqua, and Andrew Sharp

In 2007, singer and percussionist Danny Flinn, guitarist Matt Stapleton, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Sharp, formed New York Brogue in an effort to capture the free-wheeling energy of the Bronx Irish sessions

where they had met while playing. Coincid-ing with a solo-project that Flinn was work-ing on of the same ilk, they quickly released the EP “Bury Me On McLean” in 2008, and began performing throughout the Tri-state area. Blending an eclectic mixture of the tra-ditional and the contemporary, instrumental sets and powerful ballads, the trio performed

steadily until 2010, reaching as far as gigs in Ohio and Virginia Beach.

After a two year hiatus, New York Brogue returned with the inclusion of championship-winning Scottish fiddler Calum Pasqua in 2012, and has since taken to performing again with renewed vigor. They released their album, “Live From the Poor Mouth” last year.
