VIKINGS-RAVENS INFORMATION

LAST WEEK Following a full week of double sessions, the Minnesota Vikings started their 2008 campaign playing host to the Seattle Seahawks in their preseason opener Friday August, 8, at the HHH Metrodome. The Seahawks defeated the Vikings 34-17 in front of a sold-out stadium. It was the fi rst time the two teams had met in the Metrodome during the preseason since 1993 when the Vikings topped the Seahawks 23-10. The Vikings offense came out fi ring, opening the game with 11 straight pass plays. QB Tarvaris Jackson connected on 8 of those 11, including a 6-yard TD pass to FB Thomas Tapeh, and ended the day with 118 yards, 1 TD, and a passer rating of 137.7. He left the game after leading the Vikings on 2 scoring drives – the Tapeh score as well as a Chester Taylor 1-yard TD run. The newest member of the Viking’s receiving core, Bernard Ber-rian, came as billed, grabbing two passes from Jackson for 43 yards, including a 24-yard reception that led to the Tapeh score. RB Maurice Hicks, acquired in the offseason as a free agent from San Francisco, carried most of the weight for the Vikings ground game. Hicks carried the ball seven times for 32 yards, highlighted by a 29-yard scramble. Rookie free agents S Husain Abdullah and LB Erin Henderson led the Vikings in tackles with 6 and 5 tackles respectively. Henderson was also one of 3 Vikings players to drag down a Seahawks ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage, when he hit T.J. Duckett in the backfi eld for a fi ve-yard loss. DE Otis Grigsby and DT Leger Douzable (2) also fi nished with tackles for a loss. Newcomer and reigning NFL sack-king, Jared Allen had the Vikings lone QB hurry of the night. The Vikings looked solid in all phases of special teams. The team’s unit won the battle for fi eld position, posting an average starting posi-tion at the 32 yard-line, compared to the Seahawks, whose starts aver-aged on the 25. P Chris Kluwe kicked the ball 3 times with an excellent average of 53.3 yards and a solid net of 42.7 yards per punt. Rookie free agent K Steven Hauschka handled all the place-kicking for the Vikings, converting both extra point attempts and connecting on his lone fi eld goal attempt of 35 yards. Another rookie free agent, WR Darius Reynaud, had a big day returning kickoffs for the Vikings, as he took back 3 kicks for 109 yards, including a 53-yard scamper.

VIKINGS TEAM NOTES

NFL Head Coach: 3rd YearOverall NFL Experience: 11th YearCoaching Experience: 31st YearOverall NFL Record: 14-18 (.438)Regular Season: 14-18 (.438)Postseason: 0-0 (.000)Record with MIN: 14-18 (.438)College: Eastern Illinois (‘78) Entering his third season leading the Vikings, Head Coach Brad Childress has a

team built on his principles for winning football. Childress’ squad features strong play along both lines, a dynamic running game and an opportunistic defense. A bevy of top-fl ight linemen have been important to developing the identity of the Vikings and are now being complimented by emerging playmakers. The offseason addition of 2007 NFL sack leader and All-Pro DE Jared Allen via trade with Kansas City along with free agent starters WR Bernard Berrian, FB Thomas Tapeh, and S Madieu Williams fi lled key positions with veteran playmakers. With Allen, the Vikings now have 5 Pro Bowlers along the offensive and defensive lines and 8 members of the 2007 Pro Bowl squad. Coupled with a pair of proven 1,000-yard runners in the backfi eld and an aggressive defense with a nose for the ball, the Vikings enter 2008 with a strong nucleus of experienced talent. Since taking over the team in 2006, Childress has placed a premium on playing smart football, minimizing mistakes and winning the line of scrimmage. The 2007 Vikings became the 1st team in franchise history to rank #1 in the NFL in rushing offense and rushing defense. The duos of G Steve Hutchinson and C Matt Birk on offense joined by DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams on defense all made second consecutive Pro Bowl trips in 2007. The Vikings offense set franchise records by rushing for 2,634 yards (164.6 yards per game) with rookie phenom Adrian Peterson leading the way with an NFC-best 1,341 yards. Peterson’s total ranked as the 2nd-highest in team history, and his 5.6 yards-per-carry average ranked 2nd-best in the NFL. Fellow RB Chester Taylor, coming off his fi rst 1,000-yard rushing season in 2006, fi nished with 844 yards and 7 TDs on 157 carries. Together Peterson and Taylor accounted for 2,185 of the team’s rushing total, giving the Vikings the most dangerous rushing tandem in team history in terms of yardage. Second-year QB Tarvaris Jackson showed signifi cant improvement from year one as he threw for 1,911 yards and 9 TDs while rushing for 260 yards and 3 scores despite missing 4 games due to injury. He fi nished the season 8-4 as a starter. Defensively, the Williams tandem shut down the run better than anyone in the NFL, and the Vikings posted the #1 rush defense for the 2nd straight year. Over the past 2 seasons, the team has stifl ed opponents by allowing 67.9 yards per game, 2.9 yards per carry and 0.5 rushing TDs per game in those 32 games. Behind the rugged DTs, the Vikings have an emerging trio of linebackers who have a knack for the big play and ball-hawking defensive backs. The 2007 squad tied a francise record by scoring 6 TDs on interception returns and 2 more on fumble returns. The Vikings’ 13 defensive TDs (9 INTs, 4 FRs) since 2006 lead the NFL and are 5 more than the runner-up Packers’ 8. On special teams, the Vikings ranked 4th in the NFL with a 24.8 kickoff return average and 6th in the NFL as they held opponents to an average starting fi eld position just beyond the 26-yard line (26.2). The 2008 season marks Childress’ 31st in coaching and his 11th on an NFL sideline. He currently has a combined record of 219-174-8, including playoffs and bowl action.

Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell enters his 3rd season with the Vikings with 2 Pro Bowlers along the offensive line, the 2007 NFC-leading rusher in the backfi eld, a more experienced quarterback and a new playmaking wide receiver. In 2007, Bevell helped put together the best rushing attack in the NFL as the Vikings averaged 164.6 yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry. Their 2,634 rushing yards

was the highest total in team history while their 22 rushing touchdowns ranked tied for 2nd. The Vikings were led by the rushing tandem of rookie RB Adrian Peterson and RB Chester Taylor, who amassed a combined 2,185 yards on the ground, shattering Daunte Culpepper and Robert Smith’s previous highest rushing total by a tandem of 1,991 yards in 2000. Against San Diego, Peterson broke the NFL single-game rushing record when he gained 296 yards on the ground. The Vikings also sent 4 players from the offensive side of the ball - Birk, Hutchinson, Peterson, and FB Tony Richardson - to the 2008 Pro Bowl. This offseason, Bevell’s offense saw the addition of deep threat WR Bernard Berrian, FB Thomas Tapeh and RB Maurice Hicks.

Asst. Head Coach/Def. Coord. Leslie Frazier On the defensive side of the ball, Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier will begin his 2nd season with the Vikings and his 9th season in the NFL. In his fi rst year with Minnesota, Frazier led the team to its 2nd-consecutive #1 ranking against the run, holding opponents to 74.1 yards per game on the ground. The team notched 8 defensive touchdowns and led the league with 6 interceptions returned for scores. The Vikings

tied for 9th with 31 takeaways and tied a team record for the most defensive points scored in a season with 50 (8 touchdowns, 1 safety). Prior to joining the Vikings, Frazier won a Super Bowl in 2006 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts’ staff, coaching defensive backs and serving as a special assistant to Tony Dungy. During that championship season, the Colts’ defense posted 13 takeaways in the playoffs and allowed only 2 second-half TDs in the 4 postseason games. During the 2008 offseason, Frazier saw his unit add key pieces at defensive end with the trade for Jared Allen, who led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007, and at safety with the signing of free agent Madieu Williams. Frazier now has 3 Pro Bowlers along the defensive line and 4 members of the 2007 Pro Bowl squad.

Special Teams Coordinator Paul Ferraro The 2008 season marks Paul Ferraro’s 3rd as the Vikings Special Teams Coordinator, his 4th season of NFL coaching and his 27th season of coaching overall. Ferraro’s 2007 special teams units, the core of which have returned in 2008, were some of the most successful in team history. The Vikings sent 7 players to the Pro Bowl in 2007 - RB Adrian Peterson, FB Tony Richardson, G Steve Hutchinson, C Matt Birk, DT Kevin Williams, DT Pat Williams and S Darren Sharper. Only 3 teams - Dallas, New England and San Diego - had more nominations. Vikings rookie RB Adrian Peterson became only the 2nd rookie running back in Vikings history and the 8th Vikings RB to be named to the Pro Bowl. Peterson joined only Chuck Foreman in 1973 as rookie running backs to be recognized. Peterson was the 1st Vikings rookie since Randy Moss in 1998 to go to the Pro Bowl after leading the NFC in rushing with 1,341 yards and tying for 2nd in the NFL in rushing TDs with 12. He fi nished the the all-star game as the MVP. Paving the way for Peterson’s record-breaking season were G Steve Hutchinson and C Matt Birk, who appeared in their 5th and 6th Pro Bowls respectively. Birk’s 6th berth in the game tied Vikings legend Mick Tingelhoff for most Pro Bowls by a Vikings center. The only offensive linemen with more Pro Bowl honors as Vikings than Birk and Tingelhoff are Randall McDaniel (11) and Ron Yary (7). Hutchinson made his 5th consecutive Pro Bowl berth and 2nd in as many seasons as a Viking. The anchors of the Vikings line helped set team rushing records, including the most rushing yards by a tandem with Peterson and Chester Taylor’s 2,158 combined yards. Former Vikings FB Tony Richardson made his 3rd appearance in the Pro Bowl, having earned trips after the 2003 and 2004 seasons with Kansas City. Richardson and the linemen helped tie a team record with 8 games featuring a 100-yard rusher. Vikings DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, the anchors of the NFL’s #1-ranked run defense, made return trips to the Pro Bowl for the 2nd straight season. Kevin Williams made his 3rd Pro Bowl appearance in his 5 NFL seasons, following up on trips in 2004 and 2006. Pat Williams, in his 3rd season as a Viking and 11th in the NFL, made his 2nd trip to Hawaii. The DT marked only the 2nd time in team history that a pair of DTs made consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl, joining Gary Larsen and Alan Page in 1969 and 1970. Vikings S Darren Sharper returned to Hawaii for the 2nd time as a Viking and the 4th time in his 11-year career. Sharper scored his 8th career TD on an INT return last season and became only the 8th player in NFL history to eclipse 1,000 career INT return yards in the Vikings win over Chicago (12/17/07). Sharper’s 53 career INTs are the most by any active player in the NFL, and he has 17 picks and 3 TDs in his 3 seasons with the Vikings after coming to the team as a free agent from rival Green Bay. In the offseason, the Vikings added Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen via trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. Allen led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007, made his fi rst Pro Bowl appearance and earned his fi rst All-Pro honors. The addition of Allen gives the 2008 Vikings 3 Pro Bowlers across the defensive line and 4 on the defensive side of the ball.

Despite missing 2 games in the middle of the 2007 season with a knee injury, Vikings 1st-round draft pick RB Adrian Peterson fi nished 1st in the NFC and 2nd in the NFL with 1,341 rushing yards on 238 carries. Peterson’s rush-ing total fell only 133 yards short of San Diego RB LaDainian Tomlinson, who rushed for 1,474 yards on 315 carries, even though Peterson car-ried the ball 77 fewer times. Peterson’s 5.6-yards-per-carry average also ranked 2nd in the league

and was the highest average in Vikings’ history, and his 12 rushing TDs ranked tied for 2nd in the NFL. In Week 9 vs. San Diego, Peterson set an NFL record for the most rushing yards in a single game when he broke loose for 296 yards on the ground against the Chargers. He also tied a team record with his 3 rushing TDs, only the 11th time it had happened in team history, with the last time coming at Chicago earlier this season as Peterson rushed for 224 yards and 3 TDs. Peterson exploded on to the NFL scene in the 2007 opener against Atlanta when he rushed 19 times for 103 yards and turned a screen play into a 60-yard touchdown. With the 103 rushing yards, Peterson set a new team record for the most yards rushing in the fi rst NFL game. He also became only the 3rd Vikings player to gain 100 yards rushing in his fi rst game as a Viking. 2007 NFL Rushing Leaders 1) LaDainian Tomlinson, SD ............. 1,474 (315 attempts)2) Adrian Peterson, Min ................. 1,341 (238 attempts)

RB Adrian Peterson was honored as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month in both September and October of 2007, making him the fi rst rookie in the NFL to win the award in back-to-back months since Giants TE Jeremy Shockey and Colts DE Dwight Freeney earned the honor in November and December of 2002. Peterson became only the 4th Vikings player to win the award and the 1st offensive player since 1998 to be selected for the award. Peterson’s month of October included his performance at Chicago (10/14/07) when he set a new team rushing record with 224 yards on the ground, had 361 combined yards (224 rushing, 9 receiving, 128 kickoff returns), tied a team record with 3 rushing TDs and became the fi rst Vi-kings player with 2 rushes of 50+ yards in a game. Vikings 3rd-year P Chris Kluwe left oppo-nents inside their own 20-yard line 34 times this year, which ranks 3rd in the NFL and is a Vikings single-season record. In the sea-son opener against Atlanta, Kluwe tied a team record as he pinned the Falcons inside the 20-yard line on each of his 5 punts. Punting 5 times for 190 yards (38.0 avg), Kluwe gave the Fal-cons starting fi eld position at their own 11, 10, 3, 19 and 12 yard lines.

Leaving opponents inside the 20 is familiar territory for Kluwe, as he tied a team record in 2006 for the most punts inside the 20 with 28. That total surpassed his total of 17 from the 2005 season and ranked 2nd in the NFC. Kluwe also tied the team record in 2006 for the most 50+ yard punts in a season with 22. This year Kluwe broke a single game team record at Detroit when he punted 4 times for 230 yards, a gross average of 57.5 yards per punt. The previous record was held by Mitch Berger (55.8 yards per punt). Kluwe, whose farthest punt against the Chiefs sailed 70 yards, now has 2 of the top 3 gross punting performances in team history. He is currently ranked 9th in the league with a gross punting average of 44.8 yards per punt. Kluwe also broke his previous single-season shared record with Mitch Berger of punts over 50 yards (22), fi nishing the year with 29 kicks of 50+ yards. The Vikings’ record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a 16-game season was 1,090 yards in 1994, the last time the Vikings ranked #1 in NFL rushing defense. The Vikings allowed 985 yards (61.6 yards per game) on the ground in 2006. Since the 1969 AFL-NFL merger only the 2000 Bal-timore Ravens have held opponents to under 1,000 rushing yards for the season when the SB champs held teams to 970 yards.

When the Vikings returned 3 interceptions for touchdowns against the Giants last season, they extended a small piece of team history. VIKINGS ALL-TIME COACHES

PS2 -- VIKINGS AT RAVENS -- 21

STADIUM UPDATE As committed as the Vikings are to bringing a Super Bowl cham-pionship to the fans and to the state, the franchise is equally devoted to securing a long-term home for the team in Minnesota. The Vikings are one of the few NFL franchises without a stadium solution but remain determined to collaborate with the State Legislature, the Governor and local leaders to resolve this issue. With the team’s Metrodome lease set to expire in 2011 and costs increasing $50 million with each year of delay, 2009 is the critical year to preserve the long-term viability of the Vikings in Minnesota. Working with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC), the Vikings are moving forward on a public-private partnership that will open a new, multi-purpose stadium on the current Metrodome site in the year 2012. The two sides will present this stadium develop-ment plan to the 2009 Legislature for consideration. The joint proposal will include specifi c stadium design and program elements, a fi nance plan and principles of agreement on how the new facility will be operated and governed, all crucial topics for state leaders to analyze as they work to reach a stadium solution in 2009. The economic development pro-posal will include three critical elements that go beyond hosting Vikings home games:• A retractable-roof stadium that will give Minnesotans a state-of-the-art venue to be used year-round for high school and amateur sports, trade shows, community and cultural events, as well as national and international happenings.• A Winter Garden light rail train station that will serve as a connect-ing point for the future Central Corridor light rail line and the existing Hiawatha line. This gathering place is integral to the Vikings vision of the overall development and will host indoor/outdoor activities for transit riders, neighborhood residents, downtown workers and stadium attend-ees.• A privately-fi nanced redevelopment of the Downtown East area that will include offi ce buildings, residences, shops and restaurants. This exciting project will create jobs, boost the economy and bring a renewed energy to this area of Minneapolis.

FROM THE HEAD COACH

PS2 -- VIKINGS AT RAVENS -- 23

SUNDAY, AUGUST 10, 2008 Head Coach Brad Childress

Okay, just a follow up to the other night. It was great to watch that tape with all parties - offense, defense - we got two special team phases done. We will get a couple of them fi nished tonight. We played so many young guys on special teams. Basically the starters didn’t play any reps on special teams. It was great to see those guys compete and no matter how much you tell them about the speed of the game, the speed of the game is different. There are about three different speeds, one for preseason, one for the regular season and one for the playoffs. First time experience, we did some good things but they learned some things as well. They are educated now. Just on the injury front, the tough part of this business is injuries. We had a couple that were probably season-ending. Heath Farwell ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. He was actually in a couple of special teams plays and then the fourth play he was in defending, he just got rolled up on. Jayme Mitchell, it looks like it is probably a ruptured cruciate ligament. He was in for one defensive snap, rushing the passer, his fi rst play, so it is an unforgiving play from that standpoint. You can try to explain it away. I have already been asked, “Well what do you think about your training camp? Is it too soft?” Football is a violent game. We have been on the grass down here, up on the Astroturf, I don’t know, you can look for as many explanations as you want. Jayme’s rushed the passer the way he rushed on his only snap probably thousands of times since we have been in camp here…Unfortunately for him and for us he is going to be out for the season. But this game also is a game about opportunities, and we will fi ll that from within. We’ll make some roster moves, which we are evaluating right now and keep moving. We aren’t the only ones; the Redskins lost a couple of guys the fi rst day. It just happens in this business. It’s just the say it is. Q: How does the injury to Farwell affect the special teams? A: Well as I mentioned there will be other guys that will step up. It’s unfortunate for him, I know the other guys don’t feel themselves as fortunate, but it’s an opportunity. We’ll see who it is who steps in and takes the lead; somebody will. I doubt we’ll run a 10-man special teams like the Redskins ran a 10-man defense; but somebody will step up, whether it be a linebacker, a defensive back or another defensive lineman, not sure right now.

Q: What is your assessment of the competition at the linebacker spot? A: Well Heath was having a good camp. Vinny Ciurciu is doing some good things as well in his second year (with the team). With all of the guys we were going to play and not play the starters those younger kids fl ashed a little bit. Erin Henderson will get some more reps now. We saw Derek Pope a little bit; he did some decent things. It is a domino effect; we are probably not going to make another roster move and sign another linebacker. We’ll let it play out with the guys that are in house right now.

Q: Now that you are thinned out at defensive end, are you going to move guys around?A: Well we will bring some guys in and work them out but they are basically street free agents right now is what we call them, and everybody is looking for those guys. Those guys don’t just grow on trees; they’ll be on somebody else’s roster. We’ll still look at the waiver wire and see if we know somebody or have worked them out in the past and liked them but didn’t draft them or take them as a free agent. There are a lot of different means and some of those means are already going on. We already have people on the pike that we are trying to bring in.

Q: What do you think of John David Booty’s play the other night?A: He learned some lessons as well, the speed of the game type of thing. I think I mentioned after the game that nothing good happens when you hold on to the football. You have to be quick with your decisions and trust what you’re seeing. Not that everything was his fault but you have got to get the ball out of your hand. He’s a quick study, and I think he will be that much better next time out.

Q: Marcus McCauley was back on the practice fi eld today. Was that his decision or a coaching decision? A: We don’t put anyone out here that can’t defend themselves. Marcus has been in a protocol along with Garrett Mills; Garrett Mills was out here as well today. It was the next step in his rehab, going out there and doing individual and as he warmed he ended up taking some team snaps and he made a nice play on a ball down the sidelines here. So he’s pushed himself; I think he’s braced up and obviously he is pain free and he’s ready to get back to work here.

Q: Where is Visanthe Shiancoe at with his play? He had the fumble on Friday night. A: We had fi ve sacks of gold that were lying on the ground, and we only lost four. We managed to pull one back. By and large he has had a very good training camp. We’ve had a couple tackle to the ground sessions but that is a spot we call the kill zone in there, and you’ve got three people coming at you. You’ve got the middle linebacker and both outside linebackers trying to put you in a vice, so as you catch it you don’t have time to catch it and look for all of those yards. You have to catch it, secure it and then go. They did a nice job putting a hat right on it and he was a little loose with the handling. He will catch a lot more balls in that spot and we expect him to hold on to them fi rst and foremost. Q: Talk about Bobby Wade. A: I don’t think there is any question that Bobby has had a very good training camp and he is going to have a good year.

Q: Are the other guys who were not there today day-to-day?A: They are all day-to-day things. When you have a game, you have all kinds of guys that have nicks, bumps and bruises. They are some guys that can’t go and there are some guys that want to go. One guy said to the trainer, “I’m going today. You’re not going to tell me I’m not going.” You got guys that are trying to get there and it’s not their fault that they’re hurt. I always say it’s not a sin to get hurt; it’s a sin to stay hurt unless you have something like a ruptured anterior crucial. Different things that they do heat, cold, electric, skin, water. It’s amazing these days. You can work just as hard at that to get well, provided it’s not a broken bone.

Q: With eight guys out, do you feel short-handed?A: I think the big thing is that just as long as everybody is playing by the same rules, which they are, 80 is 80 and it is a fi nite number. Everybody has the same rules. We’re practicing the rest of them.

PS2 -- VIKINGS AT RAVENS -- 24

Q: What were the goggles that the quarterbacks were wearing?A: They were just checking them out to see if they have good air stream. They want to wear them on boats. They are doing a thing for Evenroot Motors. No, I’m just kidding. Stroke Specs is what they’re called. The Nike vision people, the SST people have designed them. They will fl ash fast, so you can see everything. Then they will fl ash slow. The quarterbacks are continually getting hands across their faces, people waving things and bumped and moved. So it is really more of a distraction that you have to focus through. The wideouts were using them today. I don’t know if you saw Tarvaris (Jackson), but they threw him a ball back, and it’s like fooling with someone in a strobe light. You think you threw something at him. Anyhow, by any means necessary. I think we were some of the fi rst people to have those. We have like 10 pairs of them. Defensive backs will be using them, quarterbacks and wide receivers, anything for better visual acuity.

Q: Any excuses for the injuries?A: We are not going to make any excuses about it. It’s a snake pit; be strong. We’ve lost one in the last three years; that’s a matter of record. It’s unfortunate, but we have to keep moving.

Q: After looking at the tape, was there anything that stood out that needs to be improved by Saturday?A: Well, it’s hard to numerate all of them. They’re different by each position. The fi rst one that stands out that’ll lose a game as fast as anything is that ball security issue. It’s going to happen again, but we have to make sure we take care of the football. On defense we would like to create turnovers. I think we were 0-4 in games we didn’t have one last year, if you look at that. It’s both sides. In the kicking game, I thought we had some good hang times on the kickoffs and the coverage team by in large, decent. When we break it down, there are all kinds of technical issues that our guys need to do.
