In 2007 Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt commissioned a patch that the Chiefs wore on their uniforms to honor his father’s memory. The

design of the patch is historically signficant. The patch prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt’s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt’s humble spirit, the letters “LH” are subtly displayed on the patch, symbolizing the fact that the

Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch is affixed on the left chest of both Kansas City’s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will always be over the heart of every Chiefs player. Beginning in 2008, the Lamar Hunt patch will be a permanant fixture on the Chiefs uniform.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The fi rst coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fi fth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fi ve-year stint (2001-

05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

YOUTH WILL BE SERVED Kansas City’s roster has undergone a tremendous transformation this off-season. The Chiefs now have 28 players on the roster who originally joined the club as Chiefs draft picks. Twenty-three of those draftees have been selected over the past three years. Incredibly, 72.8% (59 of 81) of the players currently in Kansas City’s training camp have three years of NFL experience or less, including 27 rookies. In fact, only 13 players on the Chiefs current roster have more than fi ve years of experience.

Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks fi rst in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (820) and TD receptions (66). He ranks second in receiving yardage (9,882), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (10,060). Gonzalez’s 66 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 9,896 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (nine) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 23 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in Chiefs history. Those 23 100-yard games are second in NFL history among TEs, trail-ing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 115 contests with at least one catch in every game last season. Only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history.

The University of Alabama boasts a long lineage of stellar QBs, including the likes of Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Ken Stabler and Richard Todd. However, it’s Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle who owns the school’s career records for pass completions (488), pass attempts (869), passing yards (6,382) and TD passes (41). A third-round selection by the Chiefs in 2006, Croyle started six contests for the club a year ago. His fi rst regular season action of 2007 came in the fourth quarter at Chicago (9/16/07), when he completed all four of his pass attempts for 55 yards for a 118.8 rating.

The Chiefs fell into a 13-0 first-half hole on the road against the Miami Dolphins and couldn’t pull themselves out. Despite battling to within three points midway through the fourth quarter, Kansas City couldn’t finish the comeback, losing 13-10 at Dolphin Stadium.

Early on, the Dolphins ripped off drives of 13 and 12 plays as they converted five of seven third downs on those two series. The Chiefs would eventually make the stop on both possessions, but not before Miami made a pair of field goals to take a 6-0 lead.

On the flip side, Kansas City’s offense struggled mightily to stay on the field in the first half. The Chiefs went three-and-out on their first five possessions, totaling just 26 yards on those five series.

Miami would open up a 13-0 lead in the second quarter set up by a flea flicker from QB Joey Harrington to WR Chris Chambers. On the play, RB Ronnie Brown shoveled the ball back to Harrington who found Chambers at the one-yard line. Brown then bulldozed into the end zone on the next play for the TD.

Both teams exchanged missed field goals late in the first half to keep the margin at 13 points. First, Miami K Olindo Mare hit the upright on a 50-yard try. The Chiefs then put together their first prolonged drive, but stalled out at the Miami 30-yard line. From there, K Lawrence Tynes’ 48-yard field goal try was tipped by DE Jason Taylor keeping the score intact at 13-0.

The Chiefs put together their best drive of the day in the fourth quarter and finally lit up their half of the scoreboard. Starting from their own seven-yard line, Huard completed five first-down passes – three of which went to TE Tony Gonzalez – moving the team to the Miami nine-yard line. That was as deep as KC would get, settling for a 27-yard field goal from Tynes to cut into the deficit at 13-3 with 11:00 remaining.

A costly Miami turnover allowed the Chiefs to creep back into the game just minutes later. The Dolphins called for a double reverse and Brown fumbled the exchange to Chambers coming around the end. DE Jared Allen was in the perfect place to scoop up the loose ball at the Miami 40 and returned it the 20-yard line. From there Huard hit Gonzalez down to the two-yard line and RB Larry Johnson pounded it into the end zone for a touchdown. That score brought Kansas City within three points at 13-10 with 7:14 remaining.

After getting the stop they needed on defense, the Chiefs got the ball back at their own 14-yard line with 3:10 on the clock. On third-and-17 from his own seven-yard line, Huard picked up a 31-yard gain on a perfectly-placed pass to WR Eddie Kennison. Huard was then sacked on first down and threw an incompletion on second down. His third-down pass went for four yards to WR Dante Hall, bringing up fourth-and-12 from the KC 36. The do-or-die situation didn’t go the Chiefs way as Huard’s fourth-down pass attempt to WR Samie Parker was broken up over the middle. The Dolphins were able to kneel on the ball twice from there, putting the finishing touches on their 13-10 win.

GAME NOTES• TE Tony Gonzalez (8,412) moved ahead of RB Ed Podolak (8,343) for third in franchise history in combined net yards.• RB Larry Johnson (3,307) bypassed RB Mike Garrett (3,246) for sixth in franchise annals in career rushing yards.

RB Larry Johnson rushed for 75 yards and scored the Chiefs only touchdown.

Unlike their preseason opener when they were able to find the end zone three different times, the Chiefs had trouble finding paydirt and dropped their 2008 home debut to the Arizona Cardinals by a 27-17 count. Although they were able to move the ball racking up 345 yards in total offense, the Chiefs had trouble getting the ultimate payoff. Twice in the first half they moved the ball inside the Cardinals 20-yard line, but had to settle for field goals. They returned twice in the second half and were finally able to squeeze in a touchdown in the game’s final minute. The Chiefs took the ball first and moved down the field. The offense picked up three first downs, as QB Brodie Croyle hit passes to WR Will Franklin and WR Dwayne Bowe to convert third downs. RB Larry Johnson carried four times in the possession for 15 yards. Eventually the drive stalled and K Nick Novak drilled a 32-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. The Chiefs young cornerbacks made themselves known in their first game at Arrowhead when Arizona took the ball. On the first snap, QB Kurt Warner went long to WR Anquan Boldin, but CB Brandon Flowers broke up the play. On third down, CB Brandon Carr broke up a throw from Warner to WR Larry Fitzgerald. In between those plays, LB Derrick Johnson forced a fumble by Arizona RB Edgerrin James that was recovered by the Cardinals. But Arizona came back in a drive that began late in the first quarter and moved the ball 78 yards on 13 plays, eating up 6:50 of the clock before RB Tim Hightower scored on a four-yard run. Rackers missed the PAT kick and Arizona had a 6-3 lead. Later, the Chiefs put together a long possession, using 12 plays, moving 53 yards and Johnson was very active in the drive, ripping off runs of nine, 18, four, eight and one-yard. RB Kolby Smith added a 15-yard run. Johnson took a direct snap from center and picked up three yards on a third-down play that gave the Chiefs first and goal at the Arizona six-yard line. But the drive stalled there and K Connor Barth came on and kicked a 35-yard field goal to tie the score at 6-6. Arizona came out of the half-time locker room and put together an 11-play, 70-yard drive directed by QB Matt Leinart. The Cardinals picked up five first downs and Leinart was five for five passing, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to WR Steve Breaston. Rackers made the PAT kick and Arizona grabbed a 13-6 lead. Rookie RB Dantrell Savage changed the momentum with a nice 45-yard kickoff return that gave the Chiefs possession at the Kansas City 43-yard line. An eight-play, 35-yard drive ended when Novak drilled a 40-yard field goal that made the score 13-9. The Cardinals answered, with RB J.J. Arrington’s 78-yard kickoff return. On the first offensive play, QB Brian St. Pierre hit a wide open FB Tim Castille in the left flat and he went untouched into the end zone for 24-yard TD pass to give Arizona a 20-9 third quarter lead. Arizona added a late TD when FS Dennis Keyes picked off Thigpen and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown. But Thigpen bounced back and moved the offense 60 yards on six plays as the drive ended with a 14-yard TD pass to WR Sergiori Joachim with 15 seconds left. Savage scored the two-point PAT for the 27-17 final score.
