Fellow Lions,

Lions Camp Tatiyee is a camp located in the White Mountains

operated by the AZ lions to provide a camping experience for

challenged individuals among their peers - that encourages

independence and self confidence. There are 18 Board

members whose responsibility is to visit the clubs throughout

AZ for fund raising and to keep the members informed of

Camp activities.

I'm responsible for the Prescott and PV Clubs. Currently I am

having a difficult time meeting my obligations and could use

some help.

I'm looking for an individual willing to go beyond the club

level activity to help me out.

If interested, I will answer any questions.

3 LION PRINTS

Recently I hit up Lion Tom Montague with a request for some background on his life, and he responded with a write-up of sheer beauty. Now, I could empower myself to embark on a big batch of paraphrasing accompanied by scads of quotation marks, but I said (to my lazy self): Why not turn Tom loose to relate his own story, in that I can’t improve on it? So here’s what he came up with, which is joyous: Roots-wise, I was born in Los Angeles, raised in Alhambra, Calif., and graduated from Alhambra High School in 1972. During my growing-up years there I did very well in sports and played baseball from Little League through college. But when I was about 14 years old I went crazy about motorcycles and hot rods. In fact, during my high school years I had seven motorcycles in my dad’s garage – one for every day of the week. Dad had to park his car outside the garage, as there was no room for his car.

Now years later I’m still restoring vintage motorcycles and have entered several in car and bike shows that have won. The last time I counted, I have restored and rebuilt more than 80 bikes and my wife says I have ‘the sickness’ when it comes to building hot rods and entering car shows.

Family-wise, I’ve been married to my 2nd and lovely wife Yevette for 17 years now. Between both of us, the Good Lord has blessed us with four great kids – three daughters and a son, who is the youngest. All are on their own now and doing well.

Career-wise, right out of high school I put myself through Los Angeles Trade Tech College and two years later was hired by the Century Porsche/Audi dealership in Alhambra as a line mechanic. I stayed with Porsche and attended the Porsche schools from about 1974 to 1981 until I got tired of working on broken cars all day and tried a change in life when my dad and I opened our own office equipment business, which did well for 16 years. I worked at our shop during the day and attended the Rio Hondo Police Academy at night for 10 months. I graduated the academy in 1985 and was hired by the Azusa Police Department as a reserve level 1 and working part time.

In 1992, I thought the police academy was so much fun that I went back for another 10-month stretch for my Post Officers Standard of Training basic certificate and was double-certified and rehired as a full-time officer. I enrolled in continuing education classes offered by our P.D. and accredited through Rio Hondo College as units, and it was free! I kept taking part-time classes, and after 18 years I have no idea of how many college credits I have, but it must be a bunch.

by Lion Jerry Jackson

When it comes to motorcycles and hot rods, he’s a “man for all cylinders”

During my years at Azusa P.D. I somehow managed to work my way up the chain and was promoted to a low-level administrative position in 1998. I retired in 2010. My dad was L.A. County sheriff retired; my brother was L.A.P.D. and S.W.A.T. retired; and I was Azusa P.D. retired. My son graduated L.A.P.D. Academy last year, and he is now four months in a patrol car in West L.A. … I guess it runs in the family.

Hobby-wise, it’s still motorcycles, hot rods and golf. A few years ago I rebuilt my second 1926 Ford Model “T” hot rod/show car. I enjoy taking it to charity car shows and hanging out with the other car guys. In the last three years it has won more than 20 trophies. The one that means the most to me, though, isn’t a trophy but rather a letter from the National Hot Rod Association telling me that my car was one of the top 10 picks for the 2013 season. I was invited to the N.H.R.A. Motorsports Museum (in Pomona, Calif.) and the N.H.R.A. Winternationals to show it.

Noon Lions-wise, my sponsor, friend, golf buddy and neighbor is Lion Steve Hodges. When he asked me to come out to the yard and do papers, I asked, “What’s ‘doing papers’?” Then he explained how we tow trailers and unload the papers onto the conveyor belts into a bigger trailer … then we go get a stale old donut! I looked at him and thought he was nuts. However, I’m always up for something different, so I went along. (By the way, the donuts weren’t that great. Sorry, Lou.)

After hanging out with some great guys a few meetings and having fun, I was hooked. It turned out to be one of the best things I’ve done and enjoy. But don’t tell Hodges that; he gets a big head.

Meanwhile, my wish and prayer is that every military soldier, police officer and first responder returns home safe to their families and loved ones when their detail is complete.

5 LION PRINTS

Lion Bob Williams/Hugh Hefner:

Bob Williams lived in California,

too, and if you knew Bob’s email

address, you might wonder who

the playboy really is.

Lion Buz Williams/Russell Crowe:

Buz may not be an Aussie, but he

does have that bad boy image

sometimes. And look how similar

those smiles are.

Lion Gary Nichols/Leslie Nielsen:

Leslie died in 2010, or did he?

Surely they share a similar sense

of humor., but please don’t call him

Shirley.

Lion Tom Haugen/James Brolin:

Tom may not be married to a

famous singer, but he sure does

have the debonair look to him.

No Respect

Lion Doug Ruckel can

certainly identify with the

late Rodney Dangerfield,

Doug got no respect.

Despite an outright plea to

help the H.E.Y.,

‘Homeless Engineers of

Yavapai,’ Doug received

only strange looks and a

few pitiful pennies.

Are they Celebrity look-alikes or

Celebrities leading a double life?

The Lion Prints Staff apologize for sending

incomplete newsletters to some members.

Apparently pages 11 through 14 were not

included in some emails and printed copies.

Our only explanation is that they were lost in

cyberspace and will never be retrieved again.

Side note 2: his sister, Coralie, is 78 and still gets lots of waves

and thumbs up when she drives around Orange, CA,…..in her

‘67 Mustang.

The Way We Were Answer:

Lion #22: Jamie Fox

Lion Jamie provided the photo below of his sister, Coralie

Arnold, in her ‘67 Mustang.

Brooklyn-born Bill Weiss gave an entertaining, fact-filled talk

focusing on racketeering and organized crime figures -- mainly in

the Depression era and later mis-adventuring -- during the April 20

meeting. His talk centered primarily on scads of photos such as the

ne'er-do-well depicted here behind him, and his delivery was in

rapid tommy-gun fashion reminiscent of the 1929 St. Valentine's

Day massacre in which Al Capone was the prime suspect. Weiss

was so impressive, in fact, that Lion Dave Ward marveled, as we

were exiting the Plaza Bonita, that "the man's an encyclopedia!" Bill Weiss

Ted Blake is director of athletics at Embry Riddle Aeronautical

University. A personal goal of Ted’s is finding the right people to

represent Embry Riddle and Prescott. He wants his student

athletes to get involved in the community. Recently the university

joined the California Pacific Athletic Conference.

Alexandria M. Wright, Director of the Yavapai College Regional

Economic Development Center, came prepared with statistics

regarding our economic situation in the quad cities area. How did

she come across these figures; through countless interviews with

area employers. She believes in the approach that Henry Ford

followed to success; pay your employees well and it will improve

the economy and the company.
