Teacher Statement Welcome to Japanese II at Prescott High School! I am looking forward to helping the students think critically, to see the world through multiple perspectives, and to understand Japanese language and culture. My goals are to bring out the best in my students, to help them reach their fullest potential both within school and in life, and to encourage them to explore how they can truly impact society on a scale greater and more far reaching than they ever imagined. Course Description For most native speakers of English, Japanese is considerably more difficult to learn than languages like Spanish or French. Japanese II will require lots of memorization and regular homework to be successful. This will be fun and interesting class, but if you are not prepared to work hard, you should consider finding a different class. Grading Policy Your quarter grades are based on total points for a nine week grading period and your semester grade is based on a 40% (1 st quarter) + 40% (2 nd quarter) + 20% (final exam) formula. 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, & 0-59=F Late Work Work turned in late will be accepted one business day after the due date for half credit. After that, it’s a zero. Make-up Work For each excused absence, students will be allowed one day plus the number of days absent to turn in work or make-up tests. Students will be required to meet all due dates for work if the due date was announced prior to the absence. Work missed due to school sponsored activities should, whenever possible, be made up prior to absences. Make-up time frames are determined per teacher discretion. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with me to make-up tests and any other assignments upon returning to class. Extra Credit Extra credit will be offered in rare instances and will not be offered simply to raise a failing student’s grade. Required Materials Each student needs to have a dedicated 3-ring binder, paper, and a PENCIL. Please bring the Japanese textbook EVERYDAY. Behavior Expectations & Consequences My classroom management philosophy is simple. I believe each student brings strengths and individuality to the classroom, and I strive to cater to those strengths and help them improve on their weaknesses. In order to ensure the students are able to learn they first have to feel safe, secure, and capable. In addition to abiding by the rules in the student handbook, students must respect themselves, each other, the classroom and materials as well as the teachers and staff members. Consequences Should a student choose to break a classroom rule, that student will be subject to the following consequences: 1 st Offense: Warning 2 nd Offense: Individual meeting 3 rd Offense: Phone call home and behavior contract 4 th Offense: Referral to the office **Steps may be skipped due to the severity of the action.** Tardy Policy In case of a ten or more minute delay to the class, PHS considers that an absence, and you must go to the attendance office to retrieve a pass to class (from Student Handbook). Behavior Expectations & Consequences

My classroom management philosophy is simple.

Consequences

Should a student choose to break a classroom rule, that student will be subject to the following consequences:

• 1st Offense: Warning • 2nd Offense: Individual meeting • 3rd Offense: Phone call home and behavior

contract • 4th Offense: Referral to the office

Hallway Passes

If the student with a hallway pass does not come back to the class within 10 minutes, the student will be marked absent (from Student Handbook).

Food & Drinks

Only water is allowed in class in a screw-top, clear bottle. No food is allowed. Use of Electronics Charging cellphone is not allowed. You may use your cell phone only with teacher’s permission. Distractions If you are caught doing homework from other classes, that work will be confiscated and not returned.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any work that is considered plagiarism by the PHS standard or the MLA standard will receive a non-negotiable grade of ZERO, and the incident will be reported to the office. Be careful when you enlist the help of friends and family members. I encourage you to ask others to help you to proofread and understand errors; however you may not simply use them as editors to “fix” your paper and to correct errors for you. All work for this course must be original to this course. Assignment Instructions and Schedules

Instructions and deadlines of both future and previous assignments are available on Power School; clicking the title of the assignment hyperlinks to the instructions. In the grade book, when your score shows the symbol “--,“ it refers to a temporarily status showing the assignment has not been evaluated yet. While a zero indicates the assignment is missing, and the deadline has passed.

Cultural Activities

Each class has the opportunity to earn a cultural event, based on its participation grade average of at least 75% per quarter. This event may include trying Japanese foods, watching Japanese films and video clips, etc. In order to learn Japanese through authentic materials, the lessons may involve Studio Ghibli films (please see the list below). Please feel

free to ask me questions if you have any questions or concerns.
