How to use these lesson plans

This lesson plan packet contains the following:

Book list

1-page weekly lesson plan grid o Alternate weekly grids for 4 day, 3 day, and 2 day programs

Printables

Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books

you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.

The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds,

whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.

The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if

you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just print the templates and handwrite your plans.

The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are

included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.

The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There

are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.

You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

Pocket Chart Activity Write the classic poem on sentence strips and place in a pocket chart.

Alternatively, write the poem on large chart paper. Do an echo read of the poem – read a few words, and then have the children be your echo and

repeat the words. Point to the words of the poem throughout this activity.

Night Sky Letters Create letters using play dough or

paint.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Fizzing Planets Create baking soda planets and then

have fun dissolving them with this science experiment.

Night Sky Math Games Make your own felt night sky or use printable stars for these early math

games.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy

Order the Planets Use felt to create the sun and planets.

Model the order of the planets from the sun. Have children work together to put them in order the same way.

Alternatively, use the printable planet cards for this activity.

Star Segmentation Work on concept of a word. Place star manipulatives in front of the child in a line from left to right. Say a sentence out loud, and have the child push one

star forward for each word said.


DIY Constellations

Children can make their own constellations using toothpicks and marshmallows (or toothpicks and

Styrofoam balls). Use number cards to challenge the kids to make a

constellation with that many “stars”.

Planet Patterns Use the printable pattern cards to explore patterning. Children can

create their own patterns, extend your patterns, or copy patterns.




Materials Read Aloud Felt; star manipulatives; foam sheets; flour; marbles or rocks

Goodnight Galaxy


Night Sky Felt Board Use felt to create planets, stars, and the sun. Children can work together to

sort the pieces, create outer space scenes, and tell stories. Alternatively,

use some of the printable cards instead of felt.

Star Letter Making Use star manipulatives to form

letters. Use star stickers to do the same thing on paper, as an alternative.


Making Craters

After reading about how craters are made, place some flour in a pan.

Experiment with making craters by dropping marbles or rocks into the

flour. See how throwing and different heights affect the craters.

Rocket Puzzle Math Create a number rocket using foam

sheets and magnets. Practice sorting in different ways before putting the

puzzle back together.

Planet Hop Use chalk outside or paper taped to

the ground inside. Draw the planets in order and label them. Let kids hop from planet to planet, or give kids clues to a specific planet and have

them find the matching planet.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Rhyming

Create a chart for the poem, and then add printable rhyming cards (or make

up the rhymes with the kids).


What’s in Outer Space? Shared writing of a list of things you

might see in outer space (add pictures and let kids use this list for writing

activities throughout the week).

Sorting Stars Sort star manipulatives by color and size. The printable stars can also be

used.






Materials Read Aloud Chalk; construction paper How to Catch a Star


“What We’ve Learned” Writing Work together with the children to write about some of the interesting facts that have been learned this

week. Depending on the level of the children, this might be modeled writing

or interactive writing.

Name Rocket Ships Cut up construction paper squares,

one for each letter in the child’s name. Help write the letters on the squares.

Children use the squares to make their names. Add a triangle on top and

let the kids draw an environment to show the rocket blasting off. You can

see an example on this name post.


Planet Hop Play a small group version of the game

from early in the week.

Use chalk outside or paper taped to the ground inside. Draw the planets in

order and label them. Let kids hop from planet to planet, or give kids clues to a specific planet and have

them find the matching planet.

Roll and Graph Planets Print out the planet graph, along with

the planet cube. Roll the cube and then record the planet on the graph.

Stop when one planet “wins”.

Centers

Arts & Crafts Coffee filter planets – Use coffee filters, markers, and a spray bottle of water to create the solar system. DIY solar system – Draw with chalk on black paper to make their own mini solar systems.

Science Order the planets – Place non-fiction books about the planets in a basket. Include photos of the solar system, along with printable planet cards. Children can place the planets in the correct order. Day and night sorting – Use sensory bottles and small toys to explore the differences between day and night.

Pretend Play

Space ship pretend play – Turn the dramatic play center into a space ship. Perhaps let the children paint a cardboard box like a rocket ship. Add appropriate dress up clothes and props (like a telescope). On the moon – Children can pretend to be living on a space station on the moon. Add dress up clothes they can wear as “space suits”. Turn a cardboard box into a Rover the kids can drive on the surface of the moon.

Literacy Starry night writing tray – Place black sand and glitter in a shallow tray. Add stars and marbles (optional) to make a space-themed sensory tray. Use printable letter cards as guides for letters to practice in the tray. Planet word making – Use magnetic letters, letter tiles, or other alphabet manipulatives to make planet words.

Centers

Math Number cards – Use the printable numbers to practice counting, number identification, and numerical order. Add marbles or planet toys for one-to-one correspondence. Star patterns – Use star manipulatives or printable star cards to make patterns.

Sensory Outer space play dough – Set out marbles or planet balls, glow sticks, star manipulatives, and black play dough for kids to create their own solar system. Space sensory bin – Fill a sensory bin with colorful rice and space themed toys. Be sure to include measuring spoons and cups.

Building

Design a rocket – Use wooden blocks or LEGO bricks to make rockets. Build a space station – Use blocks to create a space station. Add astronaut-related toys for imaginative play alongside the building.
