If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]. INTRODUCTION The records of the Presbytery of Missouri contain minutes, reports, and other records of an organization composed of ministers and representative elders of Presbyterian churches in Missouri. Volumes 1-6 have been microfilmed. Volume 7 is available onsite. See also collection C1353. DONOR INFORMATION The Presbytery of Missouri Records were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by an unknown donor. ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH The Presbytery of Missouri was established in 1817 as an administrative agency of the Presbyterian Church. Composed of ministers and representative elders, its purpose was to oversee the activities of local churches and to provide communication between the churches, the various Presbyterian synods, and the General Assembly. From the time of its establishment until 1828, the Presbytery of Missouri was under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Synod of Tennessee and was composed of churches in Missouri and in western Illinois. In 1828 a separate Presbytery of Illinois was formed, and the Presbytery of Missouri was transferred to the Synod of Indiana. In 1831 the state of Missouri was divided into the three Presbyteries of Missouri, St. Louis, and St. Charles and transferred to the Synod of Illinois. The next year the Missouri presbyteries were transferred to the newly created Synod of Missouri. During the decade of the 1840s, Missouri Presbyterians divided into what are commonly called Old School Presbyterians and New School Presbyterians. The New School Presbyterians in 1841 created three presbyteries called St. Louis, Lexington, and Harmony. The Old School Presbyterians retained the names of St. Charles, St. Louis, and Missouri for their three Presbyteries. Beginning in 1843, additional presbyteries were established which reduced the geographic boundaries of the Presbytery of Missouri. A more complete history of the boundary changes and the member churches of the Presbytery of Missouri can be found in The Missouri Presbytery, 1817-1937. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection consists of six bound volumes of minutes, one volume of unbound minutes, and two folders of related materials removed from volumes five and six. Volumes one through five and seven are handwritten. Volume six is partly handwritten and partly printed. The collection is arranged chronologically. The activities of the Presbytery of Missouri from 1817 to 1920 are well documented through these minutes. The completeness of the minutes and the types of
