I encourage this because congregational worship is a spiritual practice that is central to the Christian life. It creates space in our lives to focus us on God, to remember God’s goodness, and hear again God’s call to follow Jesus. We don’t do this as well on our own as we can do it together. I also encourage you because I’ve heard a lot of folks say that they would like River Road to attract new members. Summer is a time when families move and check out churches in their new community. If our attendance is low and our worship lacks energy, we won’t make a good impression and they won’t have a good representation of who we are. This reminds me of something an Old Testament professor of mine, Walt Bruggeman, said to me when I first entered seminary. He encouraged us to attend chapel and acknowledged that there would be times when we’d feel like we were too busy with schoolwork and there may even be times when we wouldn’t get much out of it. Yet, he said, we should still go because we do not attend worship for ourselves, for what we get out of it. Worship is something we do together. Sometimes other people need to see us there. As many of us depart Richmond during the summer months for weekends at the beach and enjoy time away on lengthier vacations, keep in mind how important your weekly offerings and pledges are to the well-being of our River Road Church. Even though many of us may be on vacation, the operating costs of the church continue each month. Enjoy your time away from work and school and the hubbub of our daily lives. But, remember, we could do nothing without the faithful and timely support of our members. Thank you for your generosity. Worship and Music Ministry Notes ~ As we transition to more a relaxed rhythm of summer, we move to our pattern of coming together in Sunday morning worship at 10:00 a.m. for all of July and the first two weeks of August. Many, many people tell me they so enjoy worshiping together as we enjoy the gifts of all God’s RRPC people together. Each Sunday will be unique as the profile of the congregation gathered moves in kaleidoscopic fashion as our members engage in mission and travel. On the music schedule this summer are Phyllis Hannum, Forrest Glass, Laurel Heath, Tess Ottinger, our Barbershop Quartet, and RiverSound, the new incarnation of Sacrifice of Praise. Ray’s sermon series, Walk This Way, and the presence of visiting guests along the way and a wonderful diversity of music make a compelling list of reasons to be present each Sunday you are in Richmond! Thanks to all who shared their gifts through the music of worship in recent weeks in Sacrifice of Praise, our Chancel Choir, and the Summer Choir. ...Remembering who we are… …Discovering Who God Is… …Learning to be God’s people at RRPC… Larry Heath, Director of Music and Organist

Summer WorshipI invite you to commit to joining us for worship this summer, if you are in town.

    See you this summer!

Fox Ould ScholarshipCongratulations to Caroline Corl, Abby Hearn, and Tyler Hutchison, this year’s winners of the Fox-Ould Scholarship.  Mary Jane Ould, with the support of her children, gifted River Road with this scholarship in memory of her father, Nathanial Hassell Fox, on the 100th anniversary year of his birth.  Mary Jane was led to establish this fund because of her memories of her father’s firm faith in God and dedication to the church, his strong dedication to family, his commitment to education, and his commitment to the community.  Since that time, 32 schol-arships have been awarded to those pursuing higher education.

  • Thanks to the Personnel Ministry and the Session for the special recognition of my years of service to the church. I want to thank the congregation for the gift you gave me. It is really appreciated. I also want to thank you for the love you have shown me over the past 25 years. I will continue to be there for the church.

    Thank you,Larry Coleman
